I would just try to see the showdown as cheaply as possible.

I'm not betting out on the flop, I don't know what the reasoning for it would be? Depending on the action I'm probably ok with check-folding or check-calling

Not excited to defend this hand pre but we are getting good odds and I'm mainly interested in some wheel draws/ 2 pair or better, not a weak middle pair OOP

Well I thought its a pretty dry board so if I fire on the flop I can protect my 4.

Ok, but personally I wouldn't bet middle pair here as we have three opponents two of which are left to act including the preflop aggressor (even though his aggression was minimal) and I feel that our hand has very marginal value

I don't think I have many hands that I would be leading out for here, maybe some two pairs that I would like to protect and sometimes a set. I think with almost all of my continuing range I would just be check-calling.

I know there are players that do lead out with more of their range so I'm not saying my range is right, but I'm just not sure what those wider leading ranges include and why, and whether A4 would be part of it

would you also protect the 3rd pair, like A2?

IF you're going to bet that flop you have to go much larger to get folds. You want to take it down there and not get called.

Right. Basically 4x is not good enough to attempt to protect.

You have no right to expect to have the best hand. If the flop checks though and the turn is a 2 then you can reconsider.

^ This too

It's not a question of "how often do I have the best hand?", it's "how often do I win?"

If you get called you are going to lose the pot on must runouts. And it's likely you will be called.

Exactly this that puny little lead out is going to be called/floated so often, if you really wanted to go all out and protect this 4 a larger bet is necessary, but I personally wouldn't even defend the weak non suited aces can often spell disaster.
