Can any of you fine people recommend some good free/cheap resources for fine tuning my MTT fundamentals and general strategies?

I'm a somewhat experienced player (I describe myself as an "advanced beginner") recently coming back to poker after a couple of years off. I actually made a decent living from live games for a couple of years, but my success was due more to my awful opponents than my own ability. I quit due to burnout and wanting a social life.

I'm getting back into the swing of things - mostly playing micro MTTs for practice. I'm cashing often and making some deep runs, but grinding for 6hrs to net $10-$20 is a bit frustrating.

I have realised my MTT fundamentals just aren't great (I mostly played 1/2 + 2/5 FR cash in the past). I find myself in a lot of spots, particularly in the middle stages, where I'm not sure what my strategy/approach should be.

I've looked through the stickies but they seem very basic and quite dated by now. I was also a member of Tournament Poker Edge but found the videos inconsistent - one would be stupidly simple and the next very in-depth. I was either bored or lost.

I've read a ton of poker books - everything from Brunson and Slansky to Harrington and Nelson, and plenty of others, but these are pretty dated too.

Thanks for any advice

I would say don't bother with resources, but play a lot, analyze good/bad hands with the help of community like 2p2 or various FB groups and track your progress with software like pocker tracker. Also, youtube is full of streams/videos where regs show/discuss games they play..helps a lot..

Thanks cizixap, can you recommend some good YouTubers? I've just discovered Polks channel and love it, but it's mostly cash game oriented

yeah, for example I recently started to listen to Gareth James podcast and he also has cool youtube channel, check out his "mini sinday million" series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55ZLgBCS_0k&t=1s

Also, Johantan Little https://www.youtube.com/user/FloatTheTurn/videos

Finally, if you want to watch live tournaments coverage, poker stars and party poker have it on youtube, i.e. the most recent one from Russia https://www.youtube.com/user/partypoker/videos

There are some fantastic podcasts that give you hundreds of hours of free strat content. I wrote a post somewhere else with a list, but my 3 favs are:

1) Postflop Poker Podcast
2) Thinking Poker Podcast
3) Rec Poker

Daniel Negreanu has got a segment on the Master Class website about poker which is about $250 but I'm sure offers a lot of training for fundamentals, I used poker VT back in the day to give me the skill sets but I think it's either not supported or out dated.

There's so much at your disposal: Here's a few of my favorites.

1) Twitch poker: Not only is watching people grind out online poker fun, but it's incredibly educational. You have the likes of Doug Polk, Tonkaaaa and Lex Velduis, and then you have a wide selection of micro-mid stakes grinders. You can see a wide variety of different spots and how people play them. Watching has been the best resource for my game.

2) Youtube: Doug Polk is a beast at breaking down hands and is a great teacher and personality. He has hundreds of videos in his archive. Doug Polk is just one of many. There are people who break down hands online, and people like Andrew Neeme who vlog their playing and break down a variety.

3) PokerGO: 10 bucks a month gives you access to the cream of the crop live coverage when it comes to live tournaments. From the WSOP to Poker After Dark you will have access to watching the greatest poker events and the greatest poker players making the greatest poker plays.

4) Upswing poker: Doug Polk's site. 90 buck sign up fee and 50 dollar a month membership fee. Not gonna say much but this product is EXTREMELY valuable.

5) forums + friends + sharemypair. Read forums like these, talk to friends, and analyze hands that might not even be your own.

GL sir

Thanks underdeveloped.

About upswing poker: is the monthly membership worth it for MTT info? I thought it was primarily a cash game focused. Their "MTT masterclass" looks interesting but I can't justify the $600-700 pricetag right now

You could just read the anthology posts that are a sticky at the top of the MTT small stakes forum. There is a ton of knowledge and great info in there that is still relative.

re : upswing
I hate it. The web-site is poorly designed and built, it's super heavy and slow. The content is meh and expensive. In fact I think that the free content that they provide, articles for example is actually more helpful than BS that they sell.

I’ve been recommended subscribing to Run It Once. They have a learning path, which comprehensively covers everything you need in a somewhat logical order. I haven’t actually seen the videos yet, but I like that it’s presented in this manner. I think it’s $25 a month which doesn’t seem too bad compared to the other paid options I’ve seen out there so far?

I don't have the masterclass, just the monthly subscription. You could consider it geared towards cash since a lot of the instruction is on 100bb play, but it is applicable for mtt's. Might not be for everybody, but I think their material is a worthy purchase. LOTS of content.

Essential is $25 a month, elite is $100 a month. The learning path contains both essential and elite videos so if only on essential may not be able to go on the "whole path" but if you're a micro/low stakes player essential should be good for you.

Elite is well worth it IMO if you can justify the cost.

Since I'm old-fashioned, I've come here just to suggest some books.

First, I should read the Harrington on Hold'em trilogy, it's still in step with the times. Then, I would read Jonathan Little's books about MTTs and STTs.

And of course play a lot!
