I often find myself in this situation over and over again. Not knowing how to play medium pocket pairs from early position. I get dealt 99 utg and decided to shove allin pre 20bb deep in mid phase of the tourney.
How would you approach this situation? Do we limp/min raise and decide otf or is this a standard shove with the given stack size.

I rarely min open, and definitely not in this spot. A min open from ep will get called too often and you'll end up playing a middle pair oop, sometimes multiway. That's no fun when you're starting the hand with 20bb.

It just depends. If people are calling too much then that's good for us cause we'll have a range advantage, we just have to navigate the minefield.

You might want to be careful about opening smaller pairs here, maybe openfolding 22-66, maybe even 77 (depends on the spot).

are you saying that he should raise/fold 22-55 from utg with 20bb stack? why? Sounds like a nice way to burn money.

I would prob fold 22-44 ugh on 20 blinds but 55 seems like an ok open.

I’m fine with open shoving 99 utg on 20bbs. If you open, open 2x. I’m not a huge fan of opening to 2x bc when we are flatted, almost all flops are bad for us and we really have to play super defensive. Atleast a shove looks weak and can be called by a wider range per se. Openening to induce on an agg table seems fine also though.

I just think at a tight timid table, 2x is going to be called in multiple spots and we are pitching a ton postflop. Might be better. Only reason I like min is we can play pot against a wide bb range if bb is only caller.
