Opening Ajo UTG

What about this? I usually open AJo from UTG with large and medium stack but I was wondering if it is really a good idea with medium stack?

Re: Opening Ajo UTG

There's a number of factors to consider, so it's hard/impossible to give a solid rule... Unless you're happy with a rule of: it depends.

Some considerations:

Stage of the tournament.

Proximity to bubble.

Expected SPR.

Table dynamics: how have your opponents been playing?

So to begin to answer the question, more detail is needed.

My inclination is I don't love this hand in full ring early stages UTG. Being UTG you're inherently more likely to end up multi-way or being 3-bet. There are better hands to open out of position depending on if I expect things to go multi-way or 3-bet.

If the other players at your table are prone to 3-betting then I'd tighten up, whatever your stack size... Unless they're crazy 3 bet machines in which case I'd try to play a hand in position or 4-bet light in response...

If they're passive stations preflop then I'd consider hands with better implied odds multi-way.

So yeah, it depends...

Usually its fine to open AJo,KQo and ATs utg on most tables. I mostly muck ATo 9max but there can be exceptions to this

great responses thanks. I think I will stop opening it with medium stack on agressive and limper tables. I always end up folding

You should be more inclined to open AJo with a medium stack than a large stack, and a small stack than a medium stack. The shorter your stack, the lower your reverse implied odds.

But the main consideration should be how tough your opponents are and how likely you are to be 3bet. Reason you're having more joy large stacked is there are more weak players early.

Re: Opening Ajo UTG

if you are talking of baseline range with 40bb+ stack size then opening AJo is fine.
I'm using AJo+, A2s+, 66+, KTs+, QTs+, JTs+, KQo, 98s-T9s baseline.

Re: Opening Ajo UTG

Ok but my problem is this. Yesterday I opened as usual from UTG in a FT bubble. With like 40bb. BB called and A was there on drawly flop. I did 2 barrels and BB c/r on TURN, without any of the draws complete.

If I had AQ/AK I would have called. With AJ I was insecure. Also I wouln't have 2nd barreled it but it was too much draws. With AJ I had the problem that he could have called AQ also.

I feel like, in "agressive" moments like bubbles and agrro/call station players, opening it from UTG gives you more problems than satisfactions

After session I will filter this spot on HM2 and see how I'm doing in general.

So whats the difference here between AJ and AQ? He would most likely 3bet AK and AA. And you block 1/4 of AQ combinations...

Re: Opening Ajo UTG

You are right, I just feel more secure with AK/AQ, on my stakes no much players would 3b AQ to UTG on bubble
