Live tournament, 25 EUR buy-in, two rebuys (25E) that can be done at any time until first break (after third level). Starting stack 3000, rebuys give 5000 chips. I, together with most of the table, immediately rebought before the first hand.

Villain is a site-sponsored pro, has been playing quite tight so far, but otherwise no real reads. Do not know if he is playing a tournament with this low buy-in as a part of his sponsorship deal (he plays for the site that owns the casino) or if he just wants to play but has been playing solid. Hero has been active, playing quite a lot of hands. Villain has somewhere around 8k, Hero covers.

It is the second level, blinds 25/50 (starting blinds 25/25). Both Hero and Villian have one re-buy left.

Hero picks up 99 UTG and makes it 75 to go.
3-4 callers, Villain on BTN makes it 475 to go.
Hero calls as does one more player.

Flop: (pot ca 1300)
J 2 2
Checks to Villain
Villain bets 600
Hero thinks for a bit and then calls

Turn:
2, board is J 2 2 2
Hero checks
Villain checks

River: (pot ca 2500)
T, board is J 2 2 2 T
Hero checks
Villain bets 4000

I found this to be a very weird bet. I asked if he overbets to make me fold something better, or because he thinks it will induce me to make a loose call and tank. Get no reply.

Is this really AJ/AA/KK going for value (or maybe AT?) or is it a bluff? What would you do?

I prefer a fold here, the way he's played his hand it feels like he has an over pair to the board and he wanted you to catch up on the river.

Also, you are still super early in this tournament and there will be a lot more easier spots to make chips.

I think folding is the right play here and keep the hero calls to later when it maters.

Thanks for the input! I guess I can agree with your reasoning on how he has played the hand.

Regarding the chips factor though I disagree since this is not a freezeout and I still have a rebuy available, so in essence I can call, lose and rebuy and still have the same amount of chips available that I started the hand with. I would probably be more inclined to fold in a freezout due to this consideriatin.
