I have set up a good color coding system with the limited colors poker tracker offers

What is a good sample size before marking down a player a given category?

I suspect that loose passive fish can be marked after 50 hands or so because their high VPIP/PFR ratio can be spotted easily; is this right?

What about Lags, Aggressive regs, Passive regs etc?

Thanks

after 3 orbits you should have a rough idea on how they playing (27 hands)

after 4 orbits we should have a decent idea how they playing (36+ hands)

this is only for vpip/pr tho really

if you are looking at things like 3b, cb%, fold to 3b, bb fold to steal, steal % then you might need over 50-60 hands

Well a good player will play different depending on the table. I myself play a lot more aggressive if there are a lot of weak nits then if the table is full of aggro maniacs

this

you shouldn't read too much into stats on samples <120 hands and even then you only get a rough idea. however if you pay attention to players actions/sizings/showdowns you might figure out if somebody is rly bad earlier.

You need a much bigger sample for those stats because the opportunities are so much less frequent. It's easy to go 60 hands without a good 3-betting spot.

VPIP/PFR I don't really pay much attention with less than 30 hands. More than 30 and I'll start to consider it, but I generally don't start categorizing players until I get >60 hands.

Ok thanks for the comments

I think ill go with these rules:

Mark a player with 50 hands if i have seen showdown and/or auto notes to confrim this marking

Mark a Recreational play at 100 hands without further reads since i guess their VPIP/PRF difference will tell me their probable playing type

Make a Reg at 200+ because Regs will play differently given table dynamics and easier to get sample sizes on them

i'm much more a sharkscope note taker, i found guys with 150K winnings but fish stats after +200 hands. On the other hand i also saw players with shark stats who are losing -100K over the years.

Yes, for 3-bets you only get roughly half the opportunities to do it (i.e. it doesn't even count if there is no raise before you) and also the lower number generally will take longer to converge - i.e. someone faces a preceding raise 40 times (opportunities to 3-bet) across 80 hands and their real 3-bet frequency is 5% - that player can easily do 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 3-bets in that time, so when you see someone with a stat of 0%, 2.5%, 5% 7.5% or 10% of 80 hands any of them could easily be the 5% guy.
