The tournament I play regularly in has these conditions:
  • 50 Big Blinds
  • 20 minute levels
  • Re-buys for the first several levels
  • $50 entry fee
  • 18 players total

I have classified this as 2 table re-buy turbo in the title, hope I got that right.

I am getting exploited badly in this structure and am doing quite poorly for a few reasons.

The players tend to be more aggressive then me, have good reading and exploitative skills, and they are very happy to re-buy if they bust. Because of the the aggressive play and the structure, after just a few levels one hand will pot commit you if you want to continue past the flop. A pre-flop raise and a few c-bets is your whole stack.

Being happy to re-buy, many players are pushing hard with either no pair, bottom pair, or top pair. They will back off sometimes, but are mostly are applying max pressure to you.

Under these circumstances, I'm usually forced to either commit my entire stack with a marginal hand, or just fold a lot when I miss the flop. If I hit a big hand it is great, but with this fast turbo structure I may only hit one or two hands the entire tournament.

People are re-buying multiple times and I'm playing tighter, and eventually I'm down to 10 big blinds and start shoving all-in.

Can anyone give me advice on how to adjust to beat this format?

I asked in another thread if studying GTO would be the way to improve, but most people said no.

What do you suggest?

Thanks very much.

A. Play in tourneys where your EV is +.
B. I assume you understand some game theory, operate within that to some degree. Bluffcatch with your bluffcatchers. They'll slow down.

I would like to know how to approach this particular format. It isn't like a deep stack tourney where you can afford to make some mistakes.

Doesn't the turbo and re-buy format dictate the strategy?

Sounds like the players understand pushfold strategy.

Get the craftywheel poker preflop plus for your phone and work with the shove call chip ev and ranges trainer.

There are no pre-flop all-in bets during the first several levels, that only happens much later when people get short.

You're talking about a later stage of the tournament, right?

Play aggro poker
3bet and iso raises bigger than normal. Take whatever spot and gamble a little (don't go maniac obviously)

The key here is to build a stack in the rebuy time. If needed prepare to fire some bullets

Then play your strategy (whatever you play) after the rebuy ends. You will have reads from all the table and they will have a loose image from you ( if are unknown). Shift your strategy and exploit the errors from others.

I have been playing this turbo home tournament for many years and have only seen a 3-bet with AA or KK or QQ or AK and nothing else in all that time.

I think the reason nobody 3-bets is because the stacks are so shallow that it is basically pot committing you.

Someone raises to 1,000, you 3-bet to 2,500, your entire stack or most of it is already in the middle or will be on the flop.

What range are suggesting 3-betting with?

If people are only 3 betting with a really tight range doesn't that mean you can be opening more hands in those early stages and then try to just play solid postflop
