I'm always a bit unsure what to do in these situations. BB vs a SB shove. Approx 20bb's. It felt like a pretty comfortable call. Villains stats over 40 hands were 38/34 which made it feel like even more of an easy call. In some respects, I feel like just plowing 22bb's in pre with A3s is a huge gamble, but then on the other hand, I feel like I shouldn't be passing up an opportunity like this.

Is this decision purely villain dependent?

With your impression of V's shoving only be based off of 40 hands, this is a fold. Sample size is too small. Not that ICM is much of a consideration at this point, you want to try and preserve a stack to position yourself in an AIPF spot with significantly more equity than Ad3d. As a general rule, calling off with a mediocre holding is significantly less constructive than shoving b vs. b with a middle of the road hand, V holds all the power with the intrinsic fold equity.

    I agree with "Morajean".

I think a shove w A3dd b vs. b would be okay but to call off almost 23 bb's w a small ace seems a little loose. I don't think the sb is terribly strong here but there are so many other hands (specifically Ax type hands) that have you beat.

I would say that with less than 20 bb's (maybe even less than 18 bb's) it'd be a much easier call.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try and fine tune my game in these spots.

    FWIW - villain had T9o.

I'd just take my edge post and fold pre with 20bb at stake. 10bb is a snap, 15bb is a snap, ~16 or ~17 makes the spot a little harder to judge. Villain is risking half of his stack at this stage of the tourney is really valuable with avg stack being 20bb so he'll still have some sort of decent holding (most of the time) with a decent chunk of equity. If you are near some sort of money jump or bubble where $EV is in play, then that would make this even more of a fold.

Ultimately, the fact he had T9o is pretty dumb, but you are still complicit in calling off a stack that still has a good/great piece of tournament equity.
