It appears I suck at playing in the BB It appears I suck at playing in the BB

I've been doing a PT review of my results and it seems I've discovered a major leak in my game: playing out of the BB. Now granted this isn't a large sample - we're talking about 600 tourneys - but the results are pretty clear.

What I've found is that, overall, I'm losing about 220 bb/100 from the BB, which is more than twice the baseline rate (if we fold every single hand in the BB, we lose 100 bb/100).

Digging a bit deeper, I find that I'm quite profitable when 3-betting from the BB but losing at an insane rate of ~400 bb/100 when calling. This would seem to suggest that defending my BB is a massive leak in my game, even though we're supposed to be defending our BB very often against small raises.

So I'll pose a couple of questions for the group:

1) Have you encountered anything similar in your game, and what did you do to address it?

2) Any suggestions on filters I should run to dig a bit deeper into this problem? Maybe defending by different bet sizes? Or break it down by position of the raiser?

Given the severity of the win rate and small sample I'd imagine this is a leak of yours, but most likely not quite as bad as it looks.

The high win rate in 3bet pots could be due to range construction preflop; if you don't include enough bluffs then your overly strong range will of course do well.

As for when calling, without seeing your stats, I'd guess that you could be overfolding to cbets/ not check-raising enough (these are very common). You could also be positionally insensitive to bluff catching late streets (folding too much vs LP and too little vs EP).

You could also filter by hand value to see which hands you're making or losing money with. But you probably need a bigger sample for this more specific analysis.

You're prob 3betting too much from the BB then and removing too much value from your defense range. So you're having an even weaker range and you're prob just playing bad post flop too.

I suspect you're right about the postflop issue. I defend frequently but then x/fold a high percentage when I whiff. I love a good x/r out of the BB, but I tend to save that move for when I connect in some way or just get a really good flop for my range. I'll dig a bit deeper to see what's going on there.

I messed something up originally, I don't know how I ended up with -400 bb/100. When I run the filters now, I get a pretty solid -40 bb/100 when calling any raise in the BB. Must have screwed up the decimal place when I ran the calculation. Oops.

That's a above average winrate for the bb then and not something to even worry about then.
