I was playing in a $120 live tourney last weekend, pretty fast structure (100BB starting stack, 20-minute levels), and came across this hand.
10-handed table
Hero (UTG+3, ~6300): Shoved 6x6x previous hand for 18BB, no callers, didn't show.
BTN (~4000?): Not a lot of reads, but said he thought hero shoved with JJ last hand.
SB (~5600): Fairly solid TAG player, hasn't gotten out of line.
Blinds: 150/300, 25 ante
Action:
Hero raises to 650 with 88
BTN calls, SB calls. 3 players.
Flop (2500): 763
SB checks. Hero bets 1300. BTN folds, SB calls.
Turn (5100): Q
SB checks. Hero ???
Spoiler:
Hero shoves all-in, SB snap calls with 66.
I was not too worried about the Q, but did not want to see any more overcards come which is why I shoved. What I didn't really think about was SB's check-call on the flop for 1/4 his stack on a relatively dry flop. The only hands that would make sense for him to do this is with 77, 66, 33, and 45, maybe A6, and a small possibility of 58. 99, TT, A7 he most likely would CRAI on the flop, JJ+ likely a preflop shove. Doesn't seem like the type that would just float with AT/J/Q/K. Wondering if a check behind on the turn was wiser to evaluate river.
In addition, I analyzed these two hands (66 & 88) in Snapshove, and said 6x6x open shove for 18BB was reasonable, as well as a 21BB open shove with 88. Wondering if open shoving 21BB with 88 is better than doing a standard open.
I'd shove the turn. I can't see too many Qx in villain's range, flatting on the BTN with 13bb and then floating that flop. Maybe AQ (if he doesn't shove pre) and KQ. He'll have hands like A7s/A6s/A3s, 44/55, and you might even be able to get 99/TT to fold to a shove.
btn has 13BB and calls pre
sb has 19bb ans calls pre
(I write this before expanding spoiler)
this is weird..I mean indeed recently people started to call from SB, and I even saw that a guy called with KTo and 17BB from SB in a super-high-roller tournament..but this is $120 tournament..I don't think that these guys are aware of these trends...
So, why would they call here instead of push or fold which is a standard strategy with short stacks?
Either they are not aware of short-stack strategy, or they are hiding super-strong hand..especially SB...for example if he hold aces, he might want to flat to get more money post-flop..weird..I would just try to go showdown as cheaply as possible...

I've played in this tournament several times, and most of them do not have any understanding of short stack strategy (lots of 10BB-20BB stacks limping). Those that do only know the very basics, and open shove when they're in the 5BB-7BB territory. I would've thought that it would be a perfect squeeze opportunity for the SB with 66, but I guess he didn't consider that.
