Too tight with medium stack (15BB to 30BB) ? Too tight with medium stack (15BB to 30BB) ?

Hi guys,

I'm working on my opening ranges, based on upswing.
When effective stacks go down, I feel I need to remove some speculative hands from the charts, specially in EP / MP.

Ex :
BB: 56.27 BB
UTG: 19 BB
Hero (UTG+1): 19.53 BB
MP: 14.38 BB
MP+1: 22.86 BB
CO: 12.68 BB
BTN: 17.54 BB
SB: 20.04 BB

8 players post ante of 0.11 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.41 BB) Hero has 9 8

In upswings' chart, you open 87s+ from that position.
It's ok when deep, but here you don't want to get reshoved with this hand. It doesn't flop so good either...

Problem is : If you remove suited connectors, weakest broadways, small suited aces etc. it gives a very tight range.
And at the end you end up being that weak player on the bubble and pre-bubble phases, who min-cashes at best.

Any advice ?

Generally, as stacks get shorter, suited connectors go down in value and weaker offsuit broadways go up in value.

Your implied odds from making straights and flushes goes down and the reverse implied odds from being outkicked with weaker broadways goes down too.

Not sure what charts from Upswing you are using, probably the free ones, but I know in their Lab they have much more detailed MTT charts to account for different stack sizes. (Their Lab is expensive. I had it for a few months at half off and didn't really find value in it. It basically just does the study work with PIO and ICMizer for you and creates lesson plans. Its easy to follow but if you are serious about study you are better off just purchasing those softwares yourself and studying on your own or with a group)

I assume that if you compare their opening ranges for 25bb compared to 50bb, that you will find a similar opening % in your position but the ranges are constructed differently. Deeper stacked, you fold KTo,QTo,JTo type hands and open with 87s,67s,Axs and reversed when shorter stacked.

I'm folding that 100%.

With that stack size you should be playing a tighter range, especially from early position. If you're concerned about blinding down, look for spots to resteal with 3b shoves and open in late position to steal.

You can prob mix stealing and folding this. Look at your hud reads on the blinds mostly and are the reshove stacks behind aggro.
