Hi,

What range would you guys assign for a villain shoving 14bb from early position?

I'm curious because I seem to be off or inconsistent with my calling ranges.

Thanks

Something like... 55/ATs/KQo/KJs type stuff I'd rough estimate.

Pretty v dependent and also on the stage of the tourney - tends to weight heavily towards 55-TT in my experience

Agree with oldgoat in that this will be villain dependent and also the table dynamics. With 14bb, I don't think we need to get it in with marginal type holdings. Even down to 10/11bb, if we take every slightly +EV shove we are not going to reaching max EV. We will find a better spot within the next 2-3 orbits on average.

Reminds me of a hand I played, where I folded A4s UTG with 11bb remaining and got berated by a bunch of people for making a 'mistake'. Who says not shoving A4s UTG for 11bb's is a mistake? We simply HAVE to take into account the table dynamics; how our opponents have been playing and how wide they've been calling. That's not to say you should make the assumption that villain is going to be thinking the same way, so do your due dilligence and if you think you can exploit them by calling with A9o/ATo etc, then do so.

We don't always need to play like a robot, we have to take into consideration the information we have and use it.

You should focus more on being balanced than whatever pseudo reads you think you have. The issue is people stray too much when no one is going to exploit them anyways for playing balanced. Folding A4s utg seems fine as well. Can also put it in a solver and tell them to STFU.

How many players behind and what stage of tournament is this are the two factors to determine your range. Later in tournaments, especially when ICM kicks in, your range will be wider than earlier.

In a 9 max with no ICM implications, your range is probably 66+ and AJ+.

If 6 handed, certainly any pp, ATos+, possibly any suited A, JTs, QJs and KJs+.

Later in tournaments, depending on ICM implications, your probably shove 5s through JJ and just opening Qs+ in hopes to get a full double up. Some people don't like the variance on the streets and prefer to shove their entire range and just take down the blinds and antes.
