When is it ok to NOT add-on When is it ok to NOT add-on

Is there ever an ok time to not add on at the end of a rebuy period? Aside from bankroll mgmt considerations.

If the add-on is 5k and you are 5k clear of the field? If you are top 5% in chips? I'm sure there's a formula for this but I wondered if it's ever profitable to skip it.

In general when I am in a tournament with an Add On I consider the cost of the tournament to include the add on.

However, I have given consideration to not adding on. For me the circumstances would have to be that the add on would be less than 20% of my stack if I felt better than average in the remaining field and less than 10% of my stack if I felt that it was a very tough field.

In all of the add on tournaments I've played in I've only failed to add on once and that was because I forgot when it was time to add on and when I got back to the table it was too late...

When I play the daily tournament ($40 + $35 add-on) that typically lasts 4'ish hours, I seldom use the add-on as the blinds go up so fast the extra chips don't seem to mean much.

It's basically always worth it to add on. Especially since a lot of add-ons will give your more chips for your money than the initial buyin.

Even when that's not the case, the problem with not adding on is that everyone else adding on will cost you equity to the point where it's worth adding on chips, even when they don't have their full cost value toward your stack.

It might not be worth it if somehow the chips were a lot more expensive to add on and not particularly relevant given the blinds. But I would have to see some scenarios where that would be case in theory.

I always add on. There is a theoretical condition where you do not add on, but you have to be so far in the lead where it is -EV to add on. I think having 100BBs stacks where everyone else in the field is less than 15BBs.

I think it's just simpler to assume you're always adding on, especially in tournaments where the add-on comes fairly early in the structure.

There may also be some theoretical situations where you are so short stacked (even with the add on) that you will likely be forced to go all in relatively quickly. This would be of course dependent on the cost of the add on, the size of it, and the size of your stack. Just as a theoretical example, you just lost an all in where you covered villain but just barely. You have 100 chips left at a 500/1000 blind level. An add on of 2500 chips is available for the cost of the original buy in. In such a spot, I am pretty sure I am not spending another buy in to give myself a 2.6BB stack that probably is not going to win me anything anyway. I’ll just shove my 0.1 BB and basically write this tourney off as a lost cause.

1) i like jjpeg line in the sand: 100bb vs shorties, which basically only happens in small field tourneys. a decent approximation i think. if theres another big stack it turns into an add on period stand off where one is only incentivised to add on if te other big stack does, provided its a bigger add on.

2) ive only used 1 bullet and i have a big stack. i may decline the add on for the 1 bullet win bragging rights.

Anything to give yourself an edge in such a high variance game is the route you should always take.
