$1.5k buy in - 5 players left. Blinds 10k/20k - hero UTG 10.5bb.

Hero A10o raises 3x BB
Villain on button flats

Flop A49h - hero has no h

Hero shoves all in. Villain calls AJ withJh and wins with J kicker.

Should I have played this differently? Shoved pre flop? He’s a bit of a call base so maybe wouldn’t have changed things. I could lead out the flop and he may have shoved over or just flat called and wouldn’t be going anywhere on the turn..

Thoughts?

Shoving preflop is probably preferable five-handed, although the result would be the same.

You should never be raising this large preflop on a stack this short. You should either minraise or jam.

Is the flop all hearts?

I don't think you need to open shove the flop, although as you've played the hand you have less than a pot-sized bet left, so it's not a big mistake or anything. Even without a heart, the fourth heart coming is rare, and you're never folding a pair of aces with your stack. You can bet smaller and jam a non-heart turn, bet and call a jam on the flop, maybe even check/jam the flop, etc.

What are the other stacks in the tournament? Are you shortest?

All about even / I was actually probably 3/5 marginally behind.

5 handed i will shove ATo with just 10.5 bb's. But it might matter what the other stack sizes are. If somebody is about to bust I would probably just fold.

I have seen people fold AJo to a pre-flop shove and I've even seen AQo fold. But in most cases AJo will call.

I'd probably shove as a default, but I have seen spots like this where it is right to open to a committing, but not all in sizing, like 4-5BB, then fold if there are 2 all ins behind you. You can get the ladder that way, and you know your hand is no good.

Me, I'd rather just shove. ATo is a great hand to shove as it has good equity, but not great playability.

Shove pre. Opening to 3x is kinda dopey. Make it 2x if you are going to play a raise/ fold type strat. I’m only min opening qq/kk/aa aq ak to induce.

3x- I’m never folding an A flop. As played if you shove you are called and lose regardless. Shove though. No reason to let sb or bb get cute and make a meh call with a worse hand and own you post when they improve while you don’t. 3x is too much of 10.5bb to raise and then fold. Just shove and see all 5 cards.

Even with no ante and UTG 5-handed, I would shove much wider than that. If you are not going to shove with 10xBB, you should generally miniraise or 2.1 it, maybe limp. However, you should mostly just shove, and this is a clear shove.

The shove seems like the best play. I'd hate to be called by someone who would have position on me.
