Situation: Large field (5000+ entries) $1k buyin event, late levels of day 2. Well into the money; ~220 players remaining. People are conscious of the money ladders in play but they are not overly significant yet... i.e. pay jumps are typically a few hundred dollars every 4ish table breaks.

Hero's previous table has broke and he has been at the new table for less than 1 orbit. So no useful reads available on villain or other players. Hero has 20bb, villain has 13bb, all other players cover and range from 30bb to 90bb.

Villain is UTG and opens to 3BB. Hero is UTG+1 with 88.

Fold, Call, 3bet, or Jam? And why?

Im assuming a utg 3x off that stack is pretty strong until shown otherwise. I am folding 88 comfortably i think. jamming is pretty narrow value range and I dont think we can flat much of anything

There is still the rest of the table to consider. We can play looser from later positions.

Thanks for the input. I found the fold for exactly the stated reasoning even though it gave me the slight pangs of nittiness and I wasn't 100% if this would be a consensus-fold from experienced MTT folks.

An UTG raise to 3x from a 13BB stack is pretty strong. I'd be comfortable folding here with so many left to act.

If UTG is an old guy definitely fold.

Agree with fold. Don't like to call such an early raise which signals strength and too many left to act. And you don't have enough implied odds to call and get paid off on a set. Jamming is too risky given a UTG raise with a shorter stack. You don't have fold equity, and the players left to act puts you at risk as well.

I haven't read the responses of the others yet. But heres my response.

We got 20BB. With 88 we are getting it in here. Ideally I want a heads up pot all in against a hand like AK or AQ and win the race to have a 35BB+ stack.
I don't care about pay jumps when playing tournaments and play to win.

So Jam because villian has 10BB left and we only got 20BB and want all our chips in preflop.

edit: After reading the responses I would still Jam. I understand their points of view that a 3x BB with 13BB stack is strong. I've never seen such a thing done in the tournaments I play.
But I would still Jam even if it was a old guy who are typically conservative tight players by stereotype.
