MTTs def ****ed my sleep schedule up, it's like 4am-11am 7 days a week now, Euro obv so I know ****ty it can make you feel... Watchin TV to fall asleep certainly doesn't help, just rip a bong or two an hour before bed, stay away from products like red bull etc. or anything with caffeine and sugar, and presto you'll be out like a light bulb.

Out of interest, are you saying it makes you feel bad now, or it made you feel bad before you went to a regular set daily time ?

I'm thinking about doing something like this, going to maybe 5am-1pm or 6-2. I think I'd need to do it every day, and probably make sure I finish playing poker at least 90 minutes before going to bed. If I happen to be up a bit later, still try to get up at the same time and keep it regular. Thoughts welcome, especially from anyone who is already doing this.

Living a noctural life of sleeping at 5-8am every day and waking early afternoon can get very depressing very fast, especially in winter when the days are shorter. Try it by all means but mehh, I think playing in the day is better..

instead of telling you what to do to fall asleep (and just between you and me, anything that involves drugs or supplements i wouldn't do unless 1000000000% necessary - it's a bad road to head down, but that's neither here nor there), i'll instead talk about poker's impact upon you personally.

for basically two years of my life, i was getting between 2 and 4 hours of sleep daily. it was for good reasons, but that's not what i'm addressing here. i am addressing the fact that variously during those two years i would feel the need to play poker because i felt for whatever reason that i HAD to. I played poker an awful lot in 2005-6, because I enjoyed it and because i had a comparative absence of responsibilities. And then 2007 came along, and my responsibilities increased by oh, 1000%. and yet, at 5am, i would still feel compelled, for reasons i couldn't explain then and can't fathom why now, open a table and play instead of getting the three hours of sleep that i so desperately needed.

so, have a big test that you really actually need to do well on? have a huge paper that's a major determinant of your grade for the quarter or semester? have friends that wonder why you're such a recluse now and won't go out? Trust me on this one: poker can wait. The tables will be there tomorrow, next week. Do what you have to do, but what you don't have to do is play poker.

I don't take anything and haven't for quite some time, but melatonin really ****ed me up, 5HTP I found to be effective and without side effects.

I went quite a while without really working out, but started late last year. I don't know how i lived without working out before frankly. If you guys are just sitting around playing all day then trying to go to sleep its no surprise that you can't sleep and I'm surprised that you don't get it...

I think its basically impossible to maintain some sort of decent balance and sleeping patterns.
In an ideal world (so rarely) I'm up and in uni for between 10 and 12 depending on the day, then typically home at 4pm. I'll register from 6.30-10.30pm (euro-UK), this completely **** me up, I can't go with less than 6 hours sleep and if I'm up beyond 3 the chances of seeing me before midday are slim.

As a result - not played in about a week, very annoying.
I don't drink coffee, so something has to give. One month I'll slip behind with uni and catch up, one month I'll let volume slip...rinse and repeat

I play MTTs full time now usually 3-4 days a week - I register from 3 pm EST-10 pm est, so sometimes my tournaments run tiil 2-3 even 4 am.....I have trouble falling asleep and I think its because your brain is just so wired during poker time that its hard to just turn it off. I exercise regularly and eat pretty well so I think that helps - try working out regularly, eat well, and get dressed decent and clean when you play. Dont roll out of bed and go start poker in your underwear looking like a mess - clean yourself up and you'll feel better - also dont play poker in your bedroom - playing in your room then going to sleep 2 ft away isn't really ideal and will make you feel like trash

my life is going great, except for sleep

i missed my 2 morning classes today

melatonin is alright, helps me fall asleep i guess, i just never wake up


getting a lot of exercise, have a bet with reef2287 to lose 20lbs in 6 weeks. been eating well and doing lots of cardio everyday, only day i missed was sunday. i gained 6lbs that day, ****ing stuffed crust pizza..

even put a yoga mat in my room next to where i grind for the synch breaks

that's the other thing i meant to address. understand how you work. i assume, like most of the rest of us poker players, that you are not a morning person. therefore, you should plan your school schedule around this fact. obviously there will be some classes that you just won't have a choice about at some point down the line, and you'll need to be disciplined to attend those, but your life will be massively easier if you don't build your school schedule around poker (being able to play the afternoon tourneys might be an important consideration for you, but build your poker schedule around your school.

My main issue is turning my brain off from thinking about what I'll call 'higher aspects of life.' (Proofs of the higher kind, generally involving either upper-level math, or the seemingly unprovable such as god, existence of free will, morals, 'correct' life-style, etc.). If I am thinking of these things, I will not be asleep for a good few hours. If I happen to be thinking about poker, luckily I'll get bored after an hour or so, and pass out then.

So, what I tend to do is simply not go to bed until at I'm at the point of exhaustion. Meaning, if I'm not already about to pass out while sitting up, I don't hit the sack. This epically fails on multiple levels.

I wish I knew a way other than sleeping pills to shut my brain off.

I haven't really been playing at all for the last few months and I can tell you that despite being really busy with school and internships and such I am infinitely happier as a human being because I can sleep. When ftops starts I'll be grinding again, and the thing that I'm dreading most is the potential sacrifice of my nightly 8 hours.

Sleep is really important if you're going to be in college dude. I think I would consider amending my mtt schedule before I would consider taking supplements or getting insufficient sleep. It's just too hard to pay attention to long lectures when you're tired.

yea seriously. after my first semester i never had another class before 10:30 and most semesters didnt have one before noon. and i didnt even play much poker til senior year, i just know i'm not a morning person.

I usually just get so high I pass out in random spots in my house, wake up at 5am in whatever position I am in and then go to my bed for the remainder of sleep.
