Hello all,

It's that time of year again! SCOOP 2016 will take place in about 10 weeks, and we've been working on the schedule for a while now, to the point that I'm ready to share a tentative version of what will play on PokerStars starting on May 8th. Please take a look at the tournaments listed below and feel free to let us know what you think, either by replying here in this thread, or by writing to us directly [scoop at pokerstars dot com].

We've got the biggest SCOOP ever on tap in May, with 55 Events coming, including new and exciting types that we've never dealt before in a major Championship series! Guarantees and multi-day settings will be announced when the Events are deployed to the PokerStars client in early April, however I can share at the moment that the Main Event(s) will be Three-Day tournaments.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

(I'll make a post after this one, highlighting some Event types which may be unfamiliar, explaining their formats.)

Seriously? This is what you thought everyone would be all excited about?
No I really like that, Mixed Omaha and NLHE/Omaha will be really really nice, as will be mix max (sorry for saying NLHE/PLO mixed would be boring). I love the amount of PLO tourneys

Awesome schedule, was worth waiting that long for it

If I understand it right it will be NLHE for sure, but they haven't decided yet which format it will be played (I'd like some 6-max)

Can you elaborate what games are in Mixed Omaha?

In general, seems like there's waaaaay too many re-entries. I would default to having # of re-entries at 1 so that the rich players don't have an advantage.

Three NLO8 tourneys is great. I disagree with having the ante up as one of the events since this isn't as popular on the normal schedule. I think a normal 6-max NLO8 would be more appropriate.

NLO8 zoom turbo is interesting. Is it possible to make this a 3-stack? It would be a fun format imo.

Players choice is cool. I'm assuming that we'll be voting from a list of tournaments and the one with the most votes will be the game format?

  1. Players will submit suggestions to us via a process that will be strictly defined in the near future.
  2. The top X number of suggestions will be identified.
  3. A tournament with a $0.02 buy-in representing each potential format will be deployed to the PokerStars client - for voting purposes only. These tournaments will not play.
  4. Players will vote for their favorite choice among the poll tournaments, being able to register for only one of the available choices.
  5. At the end of the voting period, the tournament with the highest number of registered players will be the format which will become Event 15.
  6. We'll destroy the poll tournaments so that everyone who put their two cents in gets their money back.

Sunday, May 15th

08:00 - Event 26-L: $11 NL Hold'em [8-Max, Tiered Payouts]
08:00 - Event 26-M: $109 NL Hold'em [8-Max, Sunday Kickoff SE, Tiered Payouts]
08:00 - Event 26-H: $1,050 NL Hold'em [8-Max, Tiered Payouts]
  • The final table will paid similarly to a normal 8-Max tournament.
  • After the final table, payouts will be identical for places 9 through 80, then again for places 81 through 160, and for places 161 through 240, and so on.
  • It's possible that the payout tiers may increase in size incrementally (40-40-40-80-80-80-120-120-120, and so on, for example) instead of all being 80 players in size. We'll be testing this one out quite a bit.
  • Players who know and love the kind of play which is successful in large-field MTT satellites should find this Event to be very enjoyable and rewarding.

17:00 - Event 30-L: $27 PL Mixed Omaha [6-Max, Turbo, Zoom]
17:00 - Event 30-M: $215 PL Mixed Omaha [6-Max, Turbo, Zoom]

11:00 - Event 47-H: $2,100 NL Hold'em [Mix-Max, 9-Max/6-Max]
  • Phase technology will be used to create a Mix-Max tournament for the first time in a PokerStars Championship Event.
  • For each Event above, there will be two parts, two distinct tournament IDs.
  • The first ID for each will be Part 1, the 9-Max portion of the Event.
  • 9-Max play will last for approximately 4-6 hours (TBD).
  • At the end of 9-Max play, all players who still have chips will be automatically moved to the 6-Max Part 2, which will start a short time after the end of the 9-Max Part 1.

Looks great, first Sunday is epic and I can at least go balls out that day!

great schedule. really great job Bryan, thanks so much for listening to everybody, stars gets a lot of stick, but I think Bryan does a pretty fantastic job. I'll go through a few things..

- Variable levels for ST/Thrill, do you have more details on this? Very exciting.

- the heads up starts really late on the monday, put a turbo in at similar time so people play it alongside, the first rounds especially take a lot of time.

- hu plo same as above, put a plo reentry turbo in at same slot?

- change hu plo buy ins to 215/2100/21000

- NLO8 Zoom 2k seems pretty tough to imagine it to run smoothly.

- first saturday, change the 700 ultra to 16:00 from 17:00, think people start unregisterating earlier on saturday because of sunday etc

13:00 - Event 38-L: $27 NL Hold'em (Re-Entries Enabled, Max: 3)
13:00 - Event 38-M: $215 NL Hold'em (Re-Entries Enabled, Max: 3)
13:00 - Event 38-H: $2,100 NL Hold'em (Re-Entries Enabled, Max: 3)

pretty ambitious to put 2k vanilla reentry here on a wednesday of second week, i guess thats what people want though, i think make this 6max will be a lot better, good to have additional 6max here too, o maybe move this to saturday and move to 4 max to wednesday (I THINK THIS IS SUPER GTO, everybody will play the 2k on the saturday and def not take it off and people will still play the 4max on the wednesday

- friday may 20th, why 2r1a instead of the former 1r1a, i guess everybody will be a lot deeper so its really nice, i think this is probably really good idea, just wondering why you chose it

- mix/max bravo

- 3 handed bravo

- variable time main event! LOVE THAT!

- KICK OFF on last Sunday should be ultra deep variable time, its such a nice tournament on a sunday, reg 2 hours late with 50k chips at 500/1k, its DREAMY

Best schedule of all time Bryan, interested in the feedback, but I envisage I will grind every single day here, I'm really very excited. The one "off" day is the Wednesday with the reentry 2k, put it on Saturday and swap with the 4max and it is belisssssimmooooooo, or make the last Wednesday a 5.50/55/530 action hour, great tournament!

  1. Players will submit suggestions to us via a process that will be strictly defined in the near future.
  2. The top X number of suggestions will be identified.
  3. A tournament with a $0.02 buy-in representing each potential format will be deployed to the PokerStars client.
Sounds cool, you can say something about these formats? When will these 2ct tryouts run?

Schedule looks pretty good. A lot of the early events are reentry events. Many players don't like to start that early and enjoy late reging, but a lot of the early events are reentry / rebuy events, so you'll lose entries overall by having these first.

I think it would be an improvement to generally switch these early rebuys/reentries with a later tournament - often the limit events.

For your bottom line, that's immediately better since the limit events get smaller fields and this change will effect fewer people in them.

Also historically, the limit events have started so ridiculously deep. Playing 1,000bb deep NL is still relevant, because you can still bust someone. Playing super deep level 1 in a limit event is the worst because if you have a great level, that means your stack goes up by only 5%. It often feels like a waste of time. For that reason, a ton of people already love to late-reg the limit events, which means they're fine to start the day with IMO.

When you do make the structures for the limit events, I highly recommend cutting the first ~4 levels, and adding them in later, ideally after the bubble bursts. If you already, "have every level", you can just make 5k/10k a double level (maybe with 2 different ante sizes when applicable).

I don't know if this is a minority opinion or not, but I feel that it takes a lot longer than I would like to make the money in most events, and it feels far worse in limit events (especially given that after the bubble bursts in limit events, you feel super short stacked, but that's not as big of a problem in the big bet events).

Edit: Just noticed there are no NL zoom events. Just tack on a couple of NL zoom events at the end of some days IMO. They go quick and can start late obviously.

10am/1pm/4pm ET is an hour earlier than normal? sounds like a good change

ev1 - would prefer no reentries, i hope you are going for a v big gtd for the first event if theres gonna be reentries.

non-nlhe games on sundays are probably going to struggle, don't really get putting them in there

lots of vlts is good, imo every tourney should use vlts. i hope the "fast" ones arent too fast

ev6 - nlo8 ante up seems like kind of a gimmick format at first look, not convinced it should be in scoop but tbf its probably the next best game for ante up format. monday morning is a good slot

ev9 - nlhe/plo looks good, ty

wed 11th - switch events 12 and 13 imo, a huge % of the field will reg the shootout beforehand and is almost certain to cap in any timeslot. the freezeout will get more runners in the later slot

ev15 - i guess players choice will be a vote between a few formats? poll needs to be carefully managed, could easy end up with a vanilla format just crushing any others

fri 13th - switch events 18 and 19. thrill the night before will go late and if the rebuy is in the early slot it lets us wake up a bit later and latereg at end of rebuy period without missing a bunch of play like would happen in the 700 fo

I am happy that a lot of non-nl formats are in the late slot, better for 1-tabling them and these tourneys wont go so late for so many people because of smaller fields.

ev24 - ante up needs to be on a day with less tourneys it's going to be impossible to play with 2 short handed nl tourneys and then potentially badugi and 5card plo as well. gl fresh_ood

ev26 - doesn't every tournament have "tiered payouts"? im guessing its a bit like a "double bubble" that ran at pca before, im pretty sceptical that this will be an improvement on a freezeout or action hour or something, even as someone who plays a lot of satellites.

ev31 - last year i remember a 3 stack tourney playing ridiculously deep for the first x hours because the extra stacks weren't really taken into account in the structure. starting this with 1 stack = 60bbs or something could be good

mon 16th - personally i would prefer event 31/32 switched spots, give the nl grinders a lie in after a sunday plz

ev43 - 2r1a is not a very appealing format, if all rebuys/addons give the same number of chips as starting stack there's little incentive to take them. If they give more then the buyin level is likely too high to get good numbers

ev45 - 3max turbo shootout sounds fun. psko though is going to force all ins so often it will likely ruin most of the play in the format. plz remove the ko or make it <50% of buyin

ev47 - ty for mixmax

ev49 - hu going to be hard to play on a day with so many events

definitely agree with this switch, in addition to the points you made that saturday is extremely busy and full ring will take some of the load off compared to 4 handed.

No, the Type there refers only to the type of blinds structure. The Super Tuesday and Thursday Thrill use the same VLT blinds structure, which was initially developed for VLT in a Super Tuesday in WCOOP, thus it was named 'Super Tuesday *COOP Special'.

We've been working really hard on this one. People from all over the PRM team at PokerStars have been giving input, and what you see in this thread is the result of many hours of research, discussions, etc. The schedule is now up to Version 05, having made it through Versions 00, 01, 02, 03, 03a, 04, 04a, 04b, and now 05. From Version 00 to Version 05, there have been 69 changes (according to the "Version Changes" tab in the workbook on my screen) significant enough to warrant recording/logging. It's a labor of love, I assure you.

Once the players choose the game, it'll be set... whatever it is, that's what will play out for the entire Event. I've explained the process in a post above this one. As for the niche games surviving in this particular way, I'm glad that we were able to reach this solution. As many of you saw, we were seriously considering removing some of the least popular games from SCOOP 2016. (Versions 03a, 04a, and 04b didn't have any draw games in them.) At least one poster and one member of our PRM team (Luke, in case anyone's curious) suggested that we put the games on Sunday to boost them by surrounding them with mega-NLHE tournaments. Taking that idea and running with it, I put slots on the two Saturdays as well, and here we are. It's worth pointing out, I think, that doing this also gave us room to add another vanilla 9-Max NLHE Event (#18).

As for the Players' Choice, I pulled that one out of my hat at the last minute in response to a format that I'd originally put there being voted down by pretty much, err... well, everyone. So, while trying to think of what else to put there, I remembered that once upon a time we thought about leaving it up to the players for an Event. The others in the meeting loved the idea, and here we are.

Correct, it will be NLHE. (I don't consider it likely that anything but NLHE would win the day, anyway... so might as well winnow it down from the beginning.)

To be honest, I'm ever so slightly nervous about the time shifts. Having said that, I'm sure that the Events will do okay and that we were able to make some movement without making the shift too extreme.

The same variable level time structure that was used in WCOOP 2015 for the Super Tuesday and Thursday Thrill will be used to some extent in SCOOP 2016. I have to decide how to vary the play in the Low and Medium Events. I may alter the early portions of the structure, alter the entire structure (the level times), or perhaps vary the stakes' relative structural depths by having differential starting stacks. Some testing will be required here.

As for adding two more Events w/r/t the two Heads-Up tournaments, we're locked-in at 55 Events.

HU PLO at High-Roller buy-ins? That would be pretty much unprecedented. Yikes.

This same tournament ran last year in the exact same slot with good results. As for the switch you mention, hmmm... noted.

The 2R1A is another one that I changed to something else after considering what I'd originally written (2R, Double Add-On) and deciding that it wasn't the best idea.

Action Hour needs "fixed", in my opinion. I'll probably bring it back into the *COOP fold at some point, but I don't plan to do so for this SCOOP.

The $0.02 tournaments will not run, they'll just be placeholders for players to vote on the format of their choice once we get down to a list of options on which players may vote.

event 50 looks like a good candidate. it would also result in more earlier bustouts the night before the biggest sunday without effecting the amount of play in the tourney.

The second saturday id prefer event 50 a little earlier as a late finish wouldnt be ideal leading into the final sunday.

How about making the placeholder tournament $7.50 so that only players serious about playing (has the buyin for the L) can vote? You are allowing players with 5 cents in their account to vote.
