SB limping range ? SB limping range ?

Hi guys,

I currently don't have a limping range at all.
But I see some good players doing it, so :

1. Is it OK to just raise or fold from the SB ?
(I'm playing 5€ MTT by the way)

2. If not, when should we start limping ?
My guess is that we should do it when there are less players (so less antes), and when BB is defending a lot.
I'm not sure how we should adjust depending on stack depth though.

3. What would the hand selection look like ?
There are 5 possible moves (fold, limp-fold, limp-call, limp-reraise, open), so I don't know how to build something both balanced and easy to remember.

You dont need balance at $5 games. Against solid regs I guess you can mix some limps and open jams at 15-20bbs.

Id have a limping range on 15-40bb stack depth, you still need to have a limping range on 60 and even 100bb+ because there's no rake in MTT's and if there are antes in play it's even more of an incentive to limp.

Start figuring out what sizings the bb is going to deviate the most when you limp from the sb, and how the opp. will play postflop as well. You also need to figure out if the opp. will start 3! shoving/3!ing you a lot more with hands that are more +EV as a limp-call/limp and in most cases can't call a 3! shove.

You don't need to, but limping is certainly part of the optimal strategy. The ante, blinds, and lack of rake incentivize you to see a flop.

We have solved MTT charts with and without limps. Here's a comparison with and without limps 25bb deep:

As you get deeper, the SB starts limping more and raising less. You could even simplify this to a pure limp strategy if you wanted. Although you may have exploitative reasons to prefer raise/fold.

Thanks guys, very helpful !

The last ranges are not easy to implement, but I'll work on a simplified version.
And just keep raise / fold when the BB folds too much.
