Hi guys - I haven't played much tournament poker in the past 2-3 years and haven't been really discussing strat all that much so appreciate quick sanity check on this. I am especially checking because so much value in live donkaments I want to make sure I am not punting. Also, I was frustrated because after peaking my stack around 70K - I had just been card dead and with no spots for the past 2 hours (4 levels), and just going backwards in general. Here is the info:

145 Runners
55 are left
18 cash
Blinds 1K-2K/200 Ante (30 Min Levels)
Next Level 1500-3000/300 Ante
Avg Stack ~ 68K

My Stack 35K (17.5BB)
Dealt AJo UTG + 1

I shove. Fine? No issues here? Too light?

Thanks

PardoG

don't like the jam,
just open fold imo
can't imagine that we are going to get called by worse

ya not open jamming this, it's +EV but v v unlikely to be optimal in a liveament

r/f still OK down to 15BB. but open fold is not ok and jamming may still be best depending on dynamic.

I remember thinking that is was dumb right after shoving running into AK, and feeling I should have 5.5K/Folded and battled with me 28K or so - given it's a liveament. I was trying not to be results oriented but reflecting on it I think I was frustrated because I had raise folded twice the previous orbit (once with 22, and once with A10ss) and was shown big hands - so obviously not a lot of light 3bet jamming going on but I just felt like I punted. I think the live dynamic is difficult. I was dealt KK & QQ once each and a couple small pockets all day literally building my stack by picking spots and pretty much outplaying my table which was quite weak. That is the difficulty for me in live tourneys - seems like so much value in almost playing incorrectly at times. Especially at a weak tight table.

if you're getting frustrated with weak starters, consider defending your BB a little wider and ofc stealing and restealing wider in late position. developing a light 3! range (suited mid-gappers, rag Aces) and targetting the medium stacks is especially useful.

i'd also avoid waiting several orbits before adjusting style. you don't want a frustrated image when you start stealing, restealing and defending. for the exact same reason, don't let on you're card dead (showing cards, rolling eyes, comments).

if nothing else works, muck your cards to a different spot so the bloody dealer shuffles them in a different order next time.

R/ decide mostly r/f. Open folding is the worst.

Jamming open jamming 17.5bb utg 1 w Ajo is terrible and You think it was unlucky, it it re. idc what any chart says.

I prefer opening 2.25x here and mostly folding to a 3-bet. In live tourneys like this a 3-bet usually has you crushed. Sometimes 99-TT but more often JJ+/AQ+. Every now and then you see AJs and you die a little inside... But you almost never see AT. Also, it helps that the table is showing big hands after you fold...

Why I like this live is that you are in EP, AJ will be at the very bottom of your perceived range if at all. it might be different if your previous opens with 22 & ATs were from EP but I'm guessing they weren't. Sometimes AQ/AK will even call behind to see if they can hit the flop.

I don't hate the shove, but live I don't tend to open shove above 15 BB's.

Also I am an older white guy so when I raise EP after being card dead it looks strong.

In my opinion a couple of blinds to open jam even though it can not be that bad, although not optimal. Raise folding is probably the way to go if you are not against any particular maniac. Anyone trying to gii against your very strong utg open raise (which imo is the bottom off your range) usually has you crushed.
