I have a nice dilemma - Ive been lucky enough to pick up a pokerstars silver pass in their power path promotion ( satellites are very soft btw)
the prize is either entry to $1000 ish live event - plus a side tourney plus expenses to a total of $2500 - or online tickets worth$2500 -mainly at $215 and $109 buy ins

I'm a just-about profitable low stakes player - I'm literally out of my depth against good players with deep stacks - so pretty sure I'm -EV for both options
so questions are
1. how do the standards compare - say $1000 live to $215 online
2. Is there a tourney course that anyone could recommend to skill up fairly quickly

thanks in advance

I'm guessing that the $215 online tourney will be a tougher field than a live $1,000. And the $109 would be a little easier than a $1,000.

But for me the point is you can play between 12 and 22 tournaments online vs 2 tournaments live.

The only way it is worth doing the live tournament is if you were going to be there anyway and the hotel expenses would now be paid for.

$1k live is going to be substantially softer than $215 online.

Not sure about tournament courses to catch you up quickly, either in the "cheap" part or the "good price point for a low stakes player" part. I'd suggest some books, but I think even the quickest reads for most benefit aren't going to cover everything. GTO Poker Simplified and Endgame Poker Strategy will give you some basic concepts, but you may also want something like Modern Poker Theory for at least solidifying your preflop ranges (although there's a lot more useful in there than just that). I guess it depends on what you think is missing from your game.

I don't play online, but I understand the 'average' is about 10x. So a $100 online is like a $1K live. Of course there is a lot of variation in what a $1k looks like between a tough Venetian during a slow tourist time and a $1k at the WSOP like the Mystery bounty.

Live, you won't be facing any bots, so there is that!

yes the online option would be massively lower variance and higher $EV - but I'm tempted to take a shot live if field may be softer -I don't really mind losing the buy in as its more or less freebie & I would value the experience but wouldn't enjoy it if I felt totally outmatched

thanks - I have meant to read modern poker theory for a while - maybe I will now - I do need to get better ranges for 3b and playing vs 3b but its more how to play post-flop in these bigger pots. I think I play a bit weak-tight and can get steamrollered by the better players when deep - I'm much more comfortable playing short-stacked and Ok with ICM I think.

Live 1ks are super soft. Comparing them to 109s is not accurate. A live 1k plays more like a 22 or 33.

+1

Live 1k's are pretty soft on the whole.
