Hi all,

It's been a while (early 2000s) since I've played tournaments. There's a WSOP Circuit Event coming to my neck of the woods soon, but I see all the tourneys on the schedule are re-entry tournaments.

What's the crowd-sourced wisdom on re-entry strategy for recreational players? With freezeouts, it seemed like recs had more of a chance against deeper rolled pros. Should these tournaments be avoided by recreational players if they're too squeamish about going in their pocket 4-5 times on a tourney day?

Resources/opinions/hot takes/trolling are all appreciated equally. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Reentry is the standard structure now for most live MTTs. They want that $$$.

Its still just a normal tournament, The re entry aspect doesn't change things too much, some people may be more willing to gamble in spots that they shouldn't because of the re entry option but not most.

If you bust and reenter, just think of it as entering a completely new MTT.

^^^ This.

Most players don't rebuy as they play the standard rec strategy of not going busto with TPTK when 100+ BB deep.

I usually set a threshold of rebuying if I will have 30 BBs or more and if I feel like I'm playing well. If I lose set over set, easy to justify a rebuy. If I donkey off by bluffing the table calling station, maybe I should take a break and play the nightly instead.

Look at the structure too.

Some get shallow really quick with big jumps from 1200 1600 2000, other flatten out early 1200 1400 1500. No point entering with 30bb if it’s going to be <20 bb real quick.

My rule of thumb is simple. Would I enter the mtt if I’d arrived late and it was my first buyin ? For me that’s around 50bb with a decent non turbo structure and a chance to be patient, wait for spots, and have some playability post flop.

Re entry = each buy in is a separate decision considering bankroll size, bankroll replenishment, risk aversion, knowledge of field, and estimated roi. It could be that you get some good reads on the first bullet that increase your roi. Or the buy in could be so big that your risk aversion allows one bullet but not two. Etc.

Tourneys qualified with "rebuy and add on" are different. If the add on is priced and sized such that its almost always correct to take it, then it would follow that entering a rebuy tourney would be done with the assumption that making it to the add on is imperative to maintain a minimum ev among competitive fields. Thus entering a rebuy with insufficient bullets to make it to the add on is a pretty large error, given most add on structures.

Since its been a while since you played tourney poker, I think one buy in for each tourney you intend to play is appropriate, then u can reevaluate if u bink early.

I just treat every entry as its own separate tournament. If I'm rolled for the tournament, I don't mind firing off again if the first one doesn't go well.

I am also fully willing to max late register. There's a lot of equity in being able to bypass that much of the field and if you're smart about shorter-stacked play and have your ranges down you will still be profitable. It's nice to have a chance to build a stack playing deeper, but most of that is prelude to the late game anyway, where nobody is really that deep and you're just going to have a lot of preflop confrontations.

Yes add ons are a whole other variable and it’s often correct to simply enter (once) when the addon is available.

There was a regular main event satellite for Aussie Millions with $550 entry and $200 addon, 20k chips a piece. Effectively unplayable before addon. More than half the field started at the addon. Became a 40bb starting stack event with super flat structure, with prize pool juiced by all the early stage busts.

Seems the tougher the field the less there is to gain by playing early stages. Unless you're a beast with a big stack.

I once regd a tourney last minute. I didnt notice any details other than I only had 30 seconds to join. Got sat out a hand. The bubble burst while I missed a hand. Cashed without playing a hand. Dude that bubbled was furious lol.
