1.) He called w/QQ earlier in this tourney and cracked AA

2.) The second time he had QQ (when he folded) Mercier also had AA.

130k prize difference between 3rd and 5th. The two shorties have less than 2m chips each.

It's sick but he probably thought he had the best hand but didn't want to risk it, or risk being up against AK. I think most people could find a fold there.
