SiQ, I don't really feel cemented to my position. Maybe that's just because I'm so sleepy.

Bones, Noodleman, anyone else - do you think it's unethical, immoral, stealing, or cheating by Blackize or just being rude?

I can see how it might kill the bet, whether that was the intent or not.

What if, on this forum, I offer 1.2 to 1 on the next Laker's game and someone else comes along and offers 1.3 to 1? Are they being a jerk? Are they being unethical? Or just fair competition?

Regardless, calling it unethical seems a misuse of the word. Maybe you could say Blackize is being a dick, but I don't see what he owes Boku and I don't see Boku as having a right to the action.
This is pretty much exactly my stance on the subject

Speaking of betting - would anyone want to make bets on me waking up at 'x' time (say before 1 pm?) for the next 'x' days in a row? For those that dont know me, i sleep in marathon sessions and i have very seldom been up before 3 pm est in a long time. I dont mind it being a free money for you/incentive for me type thing, but it would also be cool if someone else was trying to do a similar thing and we competed.

obv scotty I'm down for a little free money for me/incentive for you deal. If I didn't have school twice a week at 12:30pm then i'd be in the same boat you are, because otherwise I have no reason to wake up before 4pm, ever.
02-28-2009 , 05:43 AM
Scott I'll do something like that with you in a couple days. I've been sick so I need some time to reset my sleep schedule, but after that I'd like to do some kind of bet/competition regarding waking up before 2pm and going to the gym 4-5 days a week.

Speaking of the gym thing, I'd still like to find some action on some sort of getting in shape deal. I've already started my regiment so whomever would just be playing catchup most likely though.

Re: the stealing action. Blackize you've came off as a dick in this whole situation. It appears as if you and Siq are from different backgrounds so you're going to have different views on the subject. Ethics/morals/deviance is all subjective and neither of you should be attacking the other just because your view's on the subject differ. I have no idea where you're from or where you live, but in the circles that Siq frequents and the area that he (and I) are from, "stealing someone's actions" is definitely something that is frowned upon and would without a doubt put you in harm's way. Thankfully this is the internet though, so none of us have anything to worry about.

Have you thought about the disincentive of giving money to a charity or a cause you really don't like.
Say a politician or someone whose views stand diametrically opposed to that of your own.

Escrow some money, with the condition that you get it back if you fufill the waking up conditions, but if you fail, the money goes to aforementioned less than worthy cause.

he has proven hes the moron and prick, but i give him some reading skillz so i doubt he got that one wrong.

blackize you suck at social skillz.but let this aside english is not my mothertongue and im very about the main difference between immoral and unethical.

but this one gets boring, you wont ever get the point anyways.this is just natural to some people, while you belong to another sort of mankind.

We're all starting to get a bit torch and pitchforky about blackzie.

How realistic is it to expect 100k of bets all to yourself on any prop without any piggybackers booking their own side action.
Some people have conceded that it would have been ok for blackzie to take side bets with people he knows personally or via AIM. What this comes down to then, is a breach of forum etiquette at worse.

We stopped hanging people for that, surely?

I'm in pending details on x and x.

You're an idiot. How is the way I behave towards people I have contempt for, you, in any way a good measuring stick for my social skills?

What have I said that has been stupid? You're the one using words whose meaning you don't understand.

It wouldn't even be a problem if he hadn't made his side of the line so juicy.

I agree that side action is inevitable, but he can make it a non-issue if he just sets a better line.

I don't think it's cheating or stealing or anything like that. I think jumping in and grabbing someone's action in a case like this is being a dick, and prob mildly unethical as far as gamblers go.
02-28-2009 , 09:57 AM
blackize, your action stealing is highly dickish. obviously that bothers you none. which makes you a cold hearted dick.
but whats really disappointing is your attitude on here calling everyone morons for disagreeing with you. i think its inappropriate and incredibly arrogant of you.
you turning into the next eury?

I agree that it's not a very nice thing to do, but I don't know boku from adam so I'm not about to let him snap up all the action on an easy bet at ridiculous odds. Especially since I think that if I wait there is a good chance the line will move, costing me EV.

I haven't been calling people morons because they disagree with me. I'm perfectly OK with people thinking that my breach of etiquette makes me somewhat of a dick. You, noodleman, and bones have all called me an ******* or something similar and I haven't made any insults toward any of you. It's the people who are calling what I've done immoral or outright theft that I have been insulting. It's pretty ridiculous for them to assign such labels to this since at worst it's a discourteous.

I kind of view this as holding a door open for someone. Sure it's rude not to, but I'm in a hurry and it's of no real consequence to them so screw it.

Edit: It's mostly clown's
Quote:
and you STEAL action,period.
statement that pissed me off. The idea that I can steal something that never belonged to boku is so ridiculous it just drove me over the edge.

A good friend of mine had a stroke about 10 days ago. He's my age, 29, which makes the whole stroke thing just ridiculous, but he had a prior health condition that doesn't make it that surprising.

At any rate we held a benefit for his family last night at one of the local bars and managed to raise over $7k in 6hrs! I'm feelin pretty good about the state of humanity right now .
02-28-2009 , 11:37 AM
Wow towelie. Sorry to hear about your friend. It's crazy to think things like that can happen to people so young. But it's also incredible how much money you were able to raise so quickly.

Boku has offered a good for sale. He has set the price. A competitor, able to offer the exact same good, but at a lower price advertises. Free market in action - who benefits most - the customers, who next, the innovator who created the competition, who suffers, the monopolist setting high prices. Freedom, you lose it 10 cents at a time ...
02-28-2009 , 11:53 AM
People who aren't gamblers shouldn't comment or try to draw comparisons to something else that they're more familiar with. It's a different culture with different sets of ethics.

So the monopolists try to protect their turf with "ethics" rules ... same ol, same ol

I have some respect for the forum etiquette argument. It was Boku's thread and it's lame to jump in there and solicit the same people he's soliciting. That said, this isn't a moral issue and if Boku were a jerk I'd be fine with it. If Boku were someone I knew and liked I'd be thinking Blackize were a dick. In this case I don't know him at all, so I don't care.

The gambler's ethics thing I don't really respect. Whenever gambler's ethics are different than general ethics they are probably unethical. I think a comparison to business is good. In business it's felt that competing for customers is normal. There's something in the gambling community where competing for fish is sometimes felt to be unethical, like someone has a right to a fish under certain circumstances. To me these situations generally seem shady.

edit: yeah, what Peru said.

GtrHtr, not that I'm one to talk lately, but when the hell are you ever on AIM anymore? You abandoned me first bro!
