I think the processor might be part of the problem as well. A 3GHZ P4 is pretty weak these days. You want a solid processor and a solid HD.
If you do get a new machine, I'd get 4 GB of RAM at least. 2 is probably not your problem currently, but RAM is so cheap that there is no reason not to get at least 4 if you get a new machine.
If you end up looking at any higher end stuff, definitely check the computer & technical forum. I have some opinions about mixing certain video cards with 64 bit operating systems (cliff notes - do not mix 64 bit Vista with ATI cards). Also I would avoid buying any Patriot memory.
