Hi all,

New user so if this post is out of line, feel free to redirect me. I've recently started grinding on the WPN network on my home laptop. I'm looking to set up a station with an external monitor (was leaning 1 27" like the Dell U27). There's two unique issues for me. My current home laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel Core i3 processer and an Intel(r) HD graphics card. If my research is correct, this will not support 2560x1440 resolution of a WQHD monitor. So now I'm looking to upgrade my laptop and buy a monitor. The other catch is I'd like to dual purpose this station for my day job. My work laptop is an HP Elitebook Ultrabook with an Intel Core i7 processor also with Intel(R) HD graphics (does this make sense? I was expecting the graphics card to be better on this newer work laptop so I'm wondering if I'm just not seeing where it says it's HD 3000 or 5000). I do business type work so my requirements are limited to multiscreen excel, powerpoint, etc.

My poker laptop has HDMI, VGA, and USB ports. My work laptop has VGA, USB, and displayport.

So I have a few questions:
1) Am I correct that my current Lenovo will not support a high resolution monitor?
2) Assuming this is true... what is the most cost effective laptop/monitor combo I could buy, keeping in mind I need to also use the monitor with the work laptop?
3) Is a 27" 2560x1440 optimal? I don't really want to spend the money for a 30", and I don't think I'm grinding enough tables to need dual monitors just yet.

Thanks so much in advance for your help everyone. Let me know if you need any more info from me.

On a 1920x1200 monitor you can 6-table very easily with good readability. 9 or 12 tables is also possible but with less readability of course.
If you want to play 2x9 or 2x12 on two monitors, a 2560x1440 is highly welcome. If you play no more than 6 tables per monitor, a 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 is totally ok.

Is it wise to upgrade from 4 to 8 GB Ram for 45€ on my 3yr old laptop to be able to get the PT4 Hud again which enables me to save for a new laptop (by playing at places I usually don't grind like university or on the bus) or should I buy the new one directly?

The question is kinda like should I fastexe as a toss after building the 2nd gate?

Yea, kindaaaa like that question?

I grind 100% perfectly on my 2011 laptop. I upgraded to an SSD and 8gb of ram a few years back and still perfectly good for poker.

2011 sounds good. Mine could be the same age. If 8gb does the trick, I'll try.

Yo, I want to get a new laptop, but I am quite unsure what I really should get. I need a Laptop who can handle a lot of pokersoftwares + HM2/PT4 without any lag. SSD would be quite nice, but I dont know if this is really important for poker. It will be a poker only laptop.

Also I tought about getting some with 4k resolution and should be able to support atleast a monitor with 2560x1600 or sth like that. Even better if it is supporting 4k monitors via mini displayport or sth.

Optionally It would be nice to be able to put even 2 screens like that. Basically using the laptop just as the computer and 2 screens as a normal setup.

Budget should be around $1500, but I am happy to pay less.

I also live in Bangkok, amybe anyone knows some decent store around here?

Suggestions or feedback on these kind of requirements at all?
I'm in the UK !!

I'm prepared for it to be a poker only machine but would like to hear how unsafe or potentially virus-inducing fairly normal things are? Browsing, watching films, occasionally streaming films for free etc I'm used to the relative safety of Macs

Laptop:

The bigger the better so 15-17"
I guess i7 but I just want it to last 3-5 years not 2-3
Ram should it be min 8gb or 12gb
I saw an HP Envy with 1080 Matt screen and I really like the reduction of glare. Anybody know is that any good at all?
Is an ssd, even just a boot up 8gb one any good at all?
Build quality, who makes **** laptop for whatever reason?
Ideally would be good to at least play music in the background so capability and any ideas re sound quality

Thanks in advance and sorry I'm just a total windows noob !!

If you are worried, just do these other things in a Virtual Machine. Doing it that way will contain most all hacks to your main system.

Thanks Doggz what do you mean? Partition the machine between poker and other stuff?

If I get a laptop with a nice screen it would be good to watch films and play music etc, not much risk in that is there?

I'm just interested in the line between using a poker laptop for everyday use and then piling on too much junk that's gonna slow it down, risk of viruses etc

I guess I'm used to updates on a Mac that speed up the machine whereas as I understand it, updates will eventually slow a windows PC

first link when you google virtual machine will help you.

In noob terms a VM is just a computer within a computer. So the VM space is isolated from the main system.

All right thinking about a desktop, but an all in one. If anybody had any considerations that I should be aware of that would be great?

Anti-glare screen: If whatever I get doesn't have this how easy or successful are modifications?

I guess with looking at desktops, that iMacs kinda run the streets but how successfully could I run VMware to play poker on an iMac?

I don't know of any way to change glare screen.

Macs are not ideal for poker because of native software issues. If you are getting a PC to play poker, there is no reason to choose mac over windows currently.

I assume there are VM software packages for mac but I don't know of them off hand.

Whatever I get is probably not gonna be solely for poker probably and there are definitely points that I would prefer Mac over PC

I'm okay with an all in one PC if it looks all right and can beat an iMac by far for value. Just not sure if I can see that and it's hard not knowing anything about PC

The thing is, any modern computer can do everything perfectly fine. The only real restrictions are when you want to do something beyond the normal. What do you want to do with your computer? Poker? Gaming? General computing? Answering that question can best tell us what to recommend.

And not to be nitpicky, but Macs are PCs. You are buying a PC no matter what company you buy it from. The differences are in the software and hardware.

Also, you don't actually need to run a virtual machine, but it is an easy to to protect yourself if you plan on gambling for money on this computer.

Actually I understand I should be looking at gaming PCs and avoiding the high street rubbish...

Thanks

Yea, in general gaming PCs are very good all around computers. And those below the highest end are priced well as it's a competitive market. As it turns out, processing video games taxes most systems of a computer, so any computer that is good for games is good for almost anything. I'm a fan of Asus, but I don't know if they make all in ones.

And Macs are great systems, they are just very expensive and not a great fit for someone who wants to use them for poker. Although many sites and software companies now have native applications, its still not a perfect world.
