The question was how many have an expectation of $200k+,not how many win more than that in any given year.

Great thread

I have to agree with Salesbeast that there must be a lot of tournament players who are staked and are not +EV in the tournament.

I am in the don't understand why a great player would want to be staked. I just think selling a % of yourself, satellite your way in to a big live event, play smaller buy-ins and more volume are/is the smart way to go. One poster did commen on that not havig to have cash BR does free up money for investmets, which is a good point.

What I learned from this thread don't ever be staked and don't ever become a pro poker player

Was in 68k makeup. Been going on for 5 months. If you want some advice, don't play 25/50 PLO on the same roll. LOL. Never again.

Last two days with a 40k and 50k score!!! Now I can eat AND pay my bills!

Never been backed, but downswing-wise doubt I ever had more than 20k until WCOOPs/live tourneys came along

Probably had 60-80k downswing at the highest point for a good 3-4 months.

edit: realized this is a super old thread and topic is probably different now from page 1

been down almost 50K since january. Poker is brutal as far as variance goes.. Almost got out of it and then lost another 25K..

Now WCOOP comes so let's see how that goes ...

GL all. interesting thread btw

i also remember hearing brock parker barely cleared makeup with his bracelet in '09.

Last edited by slicknastyAK; 08-31-2010 at 11:48 PM. Reason: not actually sure if stealth ever had 1mil makeup but ive heard it talked about before

sm says his final mu number to jj was 674k, but also says he was over 1mil at a time.
also, who does durrr back? it was never said itt.

i don't really wanna get into it for personal reasons, but i'll say that, after my ~$120k swing online prior to the WSOP FT, i didn't just barely cover MU with that WSOP score, i did have six-figures in profit after that (i did chop, and made more $ than advertised on the payouts). i split that 6-figure sum with my backers, and have acquired a small amount of MU since then.

so before i made that post a few minutes ago, i genuinely thought my MU figure had a shot at being one of the top, now i'm pretty sure i'd be just like the top 10 or so of ppl who posted in here.

I think most people in heaps of makeup are either -EV in the majority of the stuff they play or are simply just not playing very well. Obviously there's a ton of variance in MTT's but I think a lot of people are way too quick to use that as an excuse for why they are not as successful as they think they should be.

i mean, i read stuff i posted in HSMTT from 07, there's a damn good reason that i was stuck mega bucks prior to this series.

i'm sure if more ppl who were backed and are stuck actually studied the game harder and realized their own faults/found ppl better than them to help them, they would quit blaming variance as well.

i can honestly say i sucked balls at NLHEMTT for a few years and just started to get my head out of my ass recently, and i'm sure if more grinders out there would admit they can't beat the super tuesday and the $200 rebuy and stuff, well... then i'd probably stop making $ because those are the only ppl i'm better than in the super tuesday everyone else is just as good and mostly better.

it's funny because now i can sit at a table and very objectively identify where i stand vs everyone else, and i'll be perfectly ok admitting i'm just par with the average skill and/or end up doing better than i anticipated because i'm honest and don't try to over extend my play (ie trying to outplay ppl i shouldn't be ****ing outplaying).

yea this thread is funny. the reason why most people have such large makeup is because they just aren't very good at poker and playing in games they can't beat or neutral EV (1k's, 100r's) and don't want to admit it. a big LOL at people saying how much their makeup was in "brag tone." get a clue, it's not a brag, those numbers are embarrasements. how is it "cool" to say how much your makeup was? I can't believe how personal some people have gotten in this thread.

But I know how hard it can be to convince non-poker players that it's OK to put so much of your own money at risk all the time.
This is a huge part of why I chose to get backed. It completely legitimises(sp?) poker as not being a complete waste of time in their eyes if someone is willing to invest in my play like that.

I'm now backed for stuff I couldn't bankroll myself for so it has worked out well for me, too.

Also, big losing days suck infinitely less when you're backed (and not already in a whole mess of make-up).
