Should hyper SNGs be avoided if one wants to experience greater (non-hyper) MTT success?

I am assuming here you mean STTs, as some people will use the term SNG to refer additionally to certain MTTs which play exactly the same as an MTT but as it doesn't have a scheduled start time it is somehow special and different - answer is not really. They'll help you somewhat with push/fold situations and ICM situations which transfer to donkaments but otherwise they're generally different skill sets. As long as you know which bits of play are the same as donkaments and which aren't then it doesn't matter if you play them

Yep I did mean STTs, particularly the 6-max hypers. It's probably time I grew up and quit the hypers lol. Thanks for the input.

There is nothing wrong with playing the hypers if you are better than the field at it. You will make money doing so. There is nothing wrong with doing so in terms of your MTT play either so long as you remember that they are different formats with different strategies and you don’t try to play MTTs in the same way you play the hypers.

hypers are terrible for the regular sng games as they drain a ton of money from the fish. especially on global where the rake is so high and no rakeback.

I've played many thousands of the hyper 6-maxes, done OK but the variance is ridiculous. Entering a new phase where I feel an upswing happening with my MTT game, so next month I think I will wean myself down to Turbo STTs just to not confuse the issue and avoid discouragement.

former 6/9max hyper semi-pro here.

Playing those will of cause, take away the time from you playing the MTTs.
The skills from these will help you in the final tables and ICM play and short stack open or calling ranges.

However you still need to study and play MTTs if you want to get better as there are plenty of 20+bb spots and spots with less ICM pressure.

You raise an interesting point I hadn't considered.

I'm sure I'll pull a better ROI playing in turbo or regular STTs than the hypers. However, then I'll spend twice as much or more time at those tables.

My MTT ROI lifetime is decent, and lately it's much higher.

FWIW I'm not big on multi-tabling past 2-3.

Play MTT if you want to get better at MTT.

The whole point of hyper is to get volume and rakeback. Back when SNE is still a thing pros are breaking even or losing 1% at the 60s.
I was +2% pre rake back in 30s and +7% at the 7s.
