40 player rebuy tournament, Down to final 6, all ITM.

Blinds are 10k/20k 20k bb ante

Hero is 3rd in chips with 380k, on BTN
Villain is chipleader with 770k, in BB.
2 Stacks around 150k, 2 stacks around 300-400k, and 2 stacks 700-800k

Preflop
Folds around to Hero raises to 40k, with Ah5h
Villain 3B to 80k
Hero Calls
Pot 190k

Flop
KQ4r

Villain 110k
Hero folds

Question is whether to 4bet jam preflop. Villain was older gentlemen who played fairly ABC, but knew his way around tournaments. I have played with him at other final tables, and he knows when to apply pressure and when to get out of the way. Unlike most older guys, I did give villain credit for potentially 3-betting to apply pressure with non-nutted hands. I still don't seem him getting too far away from the upper quartile of his range in this spot.

I don't think open jamming when folded around to is an option given the two short stacks. Perhaps min raise does not apply enough pressure to Chip Leader to get a Fold enough of the time. Once the villain 3 bets, I think fold/call/raise are all options, and I don't really love any of them lol. In the moment I settled for call, thinking 300k remaining was enough to apply pressure to 2 short stacks.

Curious what other people think.

I am torn between calling and folding to the ridiculously small 3 bet. My opinion is that BB has a monster like AA and wants calls. Otherwise BB should be 3-bet shoving with effective stack 19 bb's or just calling.

I guess I would call with A5s because we could flop a flush or a flush draw and a pair. Or trip 5's. Or a wheel. Or a gutter and a flush draw. I would be a little nervous about a A5x flop. I don't get why AK/AQ would min raise OOP preflop. I bombed at the Borgota when I flopped top 2 with A5s and lost to AA but the stack sizes were such that AA 3-bet could have been anything...

Don't know what the buy in is to help understand the skill level of the field and potentially the final table. But I do not think BB is "fairly ABC". Given what other people have said here there are possible 100k to 120k 3 bets (which I would never do myself) given the 19 bb effective stack size but 80k is just flat out bad.

I'm actually pretty sure you can profitably jam this one pre, and it may be better in part because of the short stacks, because the BB can use their presence to put a lot of pressure you with hands he'd have to fold to a shove.

But between the size of the preflop raise and the large flop bet, it seems to me more likely that you dodged a bullet by not jamming preflop.

I think I like exploit fold or call and just stack off super tight. Like 2 pair or Ax on a passive aggression level action by villian on flop and turn. I lean fold pre bc villian can make your life miserable icm wise even when you flop Axx. Btw I hate villians sizing. I think like 40-50k can get same food from hero here so sizing is lol too big.

I hate 4! Here bc he folds all hands you beat and only calls when he has you crushed or some solid equity with kq type hands and pps. I don’t think you want to 4! Bluff (kinda) when icm is so heavy and you have more chips than others.
