What's the current strategy for rebuys/addons, particularly in tournaments with <50 runners? Is it still basically double rebuy to start and add on always?

Do any of the more experienced posters here know the answer to the above? A few years ago the thinking was that for a good player rebuying at any blind level was +EV. Is this still the case?

There are a lot of factors to consider.

1. ICM
2. The ratio of the chips added to those previous purchased.
3. Skill level.
4. Payout structure.

I play a weekly the Orleans, where the first $200 gets you 25K in chips, the next $100 gets you another 25K. In these spots, it is hard to pass the add-on. I do one small thing, which is to wait until it is my button to add-on, since being OOP is a disadvantage. Many others do wait, and then don't add on when they get a massive stack. I think this is short sighted reasoning, but I am glad when they do it.

In spots where the extra chips cost the same as the original, it is probably always wrong to add on, until you are quite short, as the marginal value of each chip goes down.

As to skill level, if you are a winning player in the field, more chips are better, since you have positive ROI on chips in general.

The payout structure probably matters to some extent here, but I'd guess that is negligible. The above factors are more likely to outweigh whatever differences that makes.

Do rebuys follow the same logic?

And by rebuys I mean re-entering after busting for a new chip stack, not the weird top-up thing sometimes referred to as rebuying. (I don't really see this anymore but some online articles still refer to it as rebuying.)

The thing is, even though the chips are worth less, if everyone else is adding on then you lose more EV from not adding on than the cost of the add-on, such that it's worth it to add on except in situations where you have an extreme lead.

I may not have gotten that 100% correct-- Dara O'Kearney breaks it down in Endgame Poker Strategy (which has a lot of talk about ICM and the value of a stack as well).

Reentering is just playing a brand new tournament. The tournament you lost has nothing to do with the last one.

Of course, but what is the current thinking regarding whether it is +EV to enter a tournament that is a weak field but you only have 20 BBs? Or 25? Or 30? What cutoffs do y'all use to determine when you will re-enter and when you will walk away?

I'll register up until the very last second. Short stacks are easy to play.

True but buying in shorter has a lower ROI and increases variance. Need to factor in your time if it's worth coming back in with a lower profit.

I think this is exactly backwards. Max late regging increases your chance of a min cash, but decreases your chance of a win.

See any ICM related content for more details.
