Subtlety mark all the chips from set 1 then buy a new set and play with that set next time see who is playing with marked chip = profit.

he mentioned the chips aren't cheap, think marking them with something he can see via a UV light accomplishes the same thing for much cheaper

Not sure how subtle a UV light suddenly being turned will be unless you are playing in a rave/tanning salon or am I being thick ( likely).

I would just buy the second set of chips and call out the cheater next time he wins and confiscate his winnings when he binks to pay for the new chips. As its 'merica I would make sure you are armed when you call him out and preferably have a deputy or two to help out. After calling him out announce " we got ourselves a cheater boys " and proceede to lynch him/her ( more likely him IMO) from nearest tree.

Hope this helps
Yours
Chase

Just change de value of the chips. In next montly mtt, make the red chip worth of 100$ or w.e if you can.

I thought that too, but in the end it will be worth pocketing the lower denomination chips, as they are the ones that have the highest increase in value due to randomizing.

regarding cost of the chipstacks: yeah, you have to raise rake for a secure playing environment. But ofc confiscate the player's funds to pay the new chips with and make a promo at the end giving back the increased rake. Something like pizza and a stripper on the house?

My suggestion is to line em up and kick all your friends in the junk. The guy that shows up the next week to play is guilty.

I got him....

I ran my big tourney on Saturday and I put several measures in place to try and catch the chip thief.

Little background, missing from my chip sets were 230K which is roughly $205 in real money. I spent countless hours installing hidden cameras and also marked my chips with UV ink on the edges so Id be able to flash a small UV light around the table and see if I could catch the cheater red handed.

This has been an ongoing investigation since Feb of 2015 btw.

I had already narrowed down my suspects list to around 3 people and 2 of them didnt show at the big game so I only had one major suspect in mind.

I had 4 full tables and wouldnt you know it, the suspected cheater drew the seat to my left! Great Karma!

He got up to go get some food and left his jacket on the chair next to me. I quickly grabbed the pocket right beside me and I could instantly feel the chips inside. I unzipped the pocket and grabbed them.

At first break roughly 2hrs in, I made sure my table was ready to addon before we got up, and got him to put in another $100 for an addon ($200 total buyin from him).

I told him I needed to show him something upstairs, we go in my room and close the door and I laid the chips out on the bed and asked him to explain what I had found in his pocket. HE was ashamed, sorry and felt pretty stupid.

I told him that he had to go home and wouldnt be continuing in the tournament. I asked him what I should do, go downstairs and embarrass him in front of 45 people or call me in a few days and let me know what I should do.

I only told my wife so far, I really dont see much way around telling all my poker crew though since he plays weekly with us. Im really pissed that it was a decent friend who was cheating.

out of 43 entries in the tourney he was blinded off in 11th lol. It was a good pot too, $5630 in the pot! I ended up chopping 5 ways for a $1000ea! then took 3rd playing for the extra $. Not too shabby.

what do you all think I should do? Make him pay anything back he has cashed in since chips went missing, pay me the equivalent in cash from the chips he took, tell everyone what happened, let him off the hook?

Im just so glad I found the guy and can get back to normal, poker night is my favorite night and I shouldnt have to worry about cheaters at a friendly home game!

nice, well done.

The guy can clearly not be allowed to come back and play again. If you can get him to pay some money towards replacing chips or put $ into next prizelpool then that's a bonus. Maybe you could review in a year or something if he pays back something to make amends, either by having people vote or making the decision yourself. There has to be a long ban/other consequences to serve as a deterrent.

Congrats on catching him. You should tell your other friends imo, they were cheated just as much.

I agree, i had a talk with him and hes going to apologize to all our regular poker crew. Also will be banned for a period of time, and pay back the value of chips taken.

That sux to find a close friend cheating in your own home game. Glad you found him though. Ban his ass then re evaluate on a later street.

I was going to say mark your chips with a UV pen but I see that's been suggested already. This doesn't help you catch the cheater, but it helps you keep track of already stolen chips being reintroduced into the game. You should already be doing a chip inventory at the end of every game. As far as catching the cheater, maybe I'm more bold than you, but I'd probably make remaining players empty pockets at a certain point. If I didn't find the cheater though, I'd stop using the red chips entirely, and get 2 new colors to use for the 2 denominations. Using 1 color is kind of asking for it... Unfortunately, friends or not, when you give people a chance to cheat, someone is usually going to take you up on it.

Nice job catching him.

Think you have to out him to your friends for sure. The guy is obviously really sketchy and scummy for doing this. Pretty silly to do it to his friends for such a small amount as well. If you were to keep it to yourself you would be opening up your friends to having future dealings with a scummy guy that you could have prevented. Imagine if he rolled or cheated another one of your friends 6 months down the track after you had chosen not to out him.

Pretty awkward situation but he did it completely to himself by being a scumbag, so you shouldn't feel bad about it. He's the dick that put you in the situation, not the other way around. It's good if he does indeed admit and apologise to the players and pay back the money. I'd never allow him back in the game though, who wants to play poker or gamble with a guy who cheats you for small amounts.

I think you should ban him for life and cut all contact. Tell the other players too. It might not be easy but cheating in a home game, any game really, is so pathetic and disgusting that he does not deserve a second chance. You don't need people like that around you even if you thought he was a friend.

All of this. Completely up to you whether to stay friends with him or not but I would never play poker with him again and your friends should be properly informed in order to decide if they want to play with a cheater or not.

Haha, I didn't read the last few entries where you said you caught him. Nice job! I probably would've outed him in front of everyone and let them throw stones.

I honestly thought about bringing him back down to the game in front of 45 people and making him tell them, but Im not on his level. Hes going to apologize to the group for his actions though. Im just glad this is all past me now.

I spent countless hours setting up cameras, marking chips, looking at old tourney sheets trying to figure it all out. Just sucks is all. Dumbass had him in his pocket next to me the whole time and I jumped on the opportunity when he left for a second.
