This was my second live tourney. $65 buy in. Tourney started with 170 players. In in the third hour of play and I'm about average sized stack. 75 players left.

A guy in early position pushes all in and it folds to me. I'm putting this guy on a marginal to weak hand because he was taking advantage of a tight table and stealing a few blinds. I have a KJ suited. I have him covered, but if I lose I'll be around 10BBs.

I think I'm at coin toss at worst and might be calling a stone bluff. Taking him out gives me a good chance to come in the money. I call and all others fold.

He turns up a A7 and wins with Ace high. I'm out of the tourney in about 20 min, but this hand sealed my fate.

Was I too impatient?

Your advice on my play welcome.

You should include what position you were in. Also the amount of chip you have and the amount of chip he has. Blinds and antes are all helpful to make a decision.

Thanks for taking a look

This happened about a month before I found this site so I'm a little foggy on details, but I'll try:

Villian was UTG
Me: in 8th or 9th position
Blinds: 400-800
Ante 100 (full talbe, so $1000 in antes)

I'm really foggy on stack size but about

Villian: 28-32K
Me: 36K-40K

You're gonna get flamed for this.

Never call here unless guy says "I have K10" aloud.

Edit: sorry, unless guy shows K10 face up and says "I dare you to call."

Edit: sorry, unless guy shows K10 face up and doesn't say anything.

It takes a lot better hand to call an all-in than it does to go all-in.

You had 2 critical issues in this hand:

1) Position. The Villan was UTG. So even if he plays a weaker range of cards, since he's UTG, he's only going to go all-in when he's at the upper end since he has to bet into the field.

2) Stack Sizes. You had roughly 30-40BBs, so there's plenty of time to find a better spot. There's no need to gamble here.

On another note, just remember patience. That's been my biggest issue in the transition from online to live. I will frankly get bored in the middle of a live tourney and gamble too much. To combat this, I bring an ipod and whenever I sense I'm gambling too much, I just start listening to music.

We could go on all day about betting patterns, position, and stack sizes, but could the central issue really be patience? What was going through your mind in the 10-20 minutes prior to that hand?

Dean, i doubted the guy had 30-40bb and shoved with a7os utg... I think you might remember it wrong. In anycase, KJ is a weak hand. Fold it and wait for A's in 20 hands.

You got a good read on me. 10-20 min prior, I was thinking I'd like to make a big run. I'm playing tonight and going really concentrate on discipnle.

When I play online I like PLO because I get to see more action and get in more pots. Tonight is about shifting gears.

I think with your stack size, you can pick a much better spot I think, especially with villain UTG. Even if he has been taking advantage of the table, you will have another opportunity to pick up chips from him. Pick a better spot

I tend to agree you're probably remembering this wrong but if he really did open shove 40bb UTG then you shouldn't even be thinking about calling

If he wants to steal the blinds for a 2% or so gain, out of position, and risk running into big hands.... let him.

Besides, he has to have an Ace or a pair here, imo. Why flip, at best? Was he the only weak seat at the table?

THANKS I kept your advice in mind in a 60 player bounty at Harrah Chester last night. Walked away with $300 profit and had a great time. (4th place and 4 bounties.) Let me know if you play there. I'll buy you a drink during next Thursday tourney.
