I am in MP with A J and 15bb. What do you normally do in this spot? I elected to jam, but maybe it's just a raise/decide? There was one shorter stack behind, rest had me covered.
People tend to play pretty well vs the jam and with stacks the way they are they should be more inclined to look you up a bit wider than they normally would.
Maybe you get like 10% wiggle room over Nash defense likelihood of taking it down pre. And almost all the stuff they'd overfold (BB: KTs; BTN: ATs, KQs) is stuff you want to take it to the streets against.
Particularly with the ICM think it's a mix limp or 2x
Don't think you ever even win the most cEV with the jam.
I haven't added limping to my tournament game (other than form the SB), but it seems doing it in close-to-the money situations is smart.
The one thought I had that pushed me to jam was the CO seemed like a pretty competent player with a huge stack. He could and probably would put a lot of pressure on me.
Do you jam any hands from this spot or should we limp, 2x or fold exclusively? Makes sense to avoid the variance of jamming in these spots even at 12bbs.
I have had people show me AQ when they fold. I have also been called with AT/A9/A8. I have had people tank call with AK.
I would consider raising to 2x from the BTN because we would have position. But I usually just jam anyway with AJ.
Still, because you are likely a better player than me it is reasonable to min raise and play it from there. Why I don't like to do that is there are many flops I won't cbet on and when I cbet and get called it makes the rest of the hand extremely tricky when we don't have a pair (which will happen 2/3 of the time on the flop). And with less than 12 blinds my range expands a little on pre-flop jams so it makes it more likely I won't make it to the money.
As you may expect, the solver likes to mix with a more polar range based around the minr. Here is a solve assuming 14bb stack from the LJ vs a SB jam.
Jamming 44-88, JTs-KJs, T9s, KQo, AQo, AJo, some AKo and ATo
Minr 99+, KQs+, A4s+, K8s, J9s-K9s, A9o, QTo+
Then you minr call with the pairs, KQs+, A9s+, and then minr fold the weak offsuit broadways and weak suited hands.
I am not sure if ICM will tilt the scales toward jamming more or minring more. Id probably lean toward minring more, especially as you get further from the button. I have no 15bb jams from utg, for example.
I like jam over min open. Idk you can min open but probably should
Call off to a 3! Or shove unless an unusually tight player. I like just taking the play away and jamming ourselves. We aren’t even close to the money so no real icm pressure. Just stick it in and don’t mind the bad result if it comes. I would only min open AA/KK here and maybe QQ at a high frequency.
