Jesus Christ that's brutal man.

Sounds like the Canadian Border Patrol made a good call. Nothing but trouble, anywhere in Norte America.

Glad the worst thing that happened to you was losing a little cash jdawg. At least you have a good story to tell at parties
03-10-2014 , 12:05 PM
I was once told a valuable lesson about cops and Mexico, but I imagine it would work in other corrupt nations. You never pull your wallet/full wad out in front of them. Always keep a few bucks in your front pocket. That way when they ask for their bribe, you just pull out that little bit of cash and that's all they see.
03-10-2014 , 12:14 PM
If you have such a high risk of false arrest by bribery-seeking police, perhaps there's a better strategy than "have easily accessible money to bribe them".
03-10-2014 , 04:43 PM
Wow! that story was pretty infuriating Jdawg. Glad to hear that it didn't escalate to worse. It sucks to lose money like that but I bet it would suck a lot more to actually get ****ed up in jail or something.

$100 bill hanging out of your zipper should do the trick.

Also re: 'corrupt countries', feel like variations of that story could've happened pretty much anywhere.

Yea so I've done a fair amount of partying down in Mexico, most of it in the club district of Tijuana, which is where this incident occurred, and it was the first time I've had troubles in 2.5 yrs. You tend to have to look for trouble to find it, same as in most American cities/places around the world.

The main 2 problems were 1. I was by myself, being with just one other person and you're usually good to go 2. It's the start of spring break season so being a young, white kid walking down a sketchy side street in Tijuana is gonna spell trouble

Mexico is definitely (from what I've heard anyway) trying to weed out the corruption in their PD's as best as they can; if I was more sober I would have tried to get the different officers badge numbers, and if I couldn't get that, would have at least gotten the 2 police trucks ID numbers.

I've told the story to a couple business owners down here thus far the past couple days and they were both upset and both asked me if I got the officers badge numbers as they both knew different people that had at least some power that could have helped me get the arresting officer and the officer who stole 1500 pesos off me in trouble/fired.

Oh well, live and learn. I'll be more careful in the future WRT making sure I'm with at least 1 person; first time Ive had trouble walking around by myself in probably 20 or so times of going to TJ by myself. I usually do have a $20 bill that I keep in my wallet (I don't keep my money in there obviously) for a situation like that, but apparently had spent it that night.

Seems like a terrible idea. Such a small upside and could have a very large downside. You made some small mistakes and got owned for some money. I would leave it at that, live and learn and move on.

I went through your old PGC thread when looking for why you got rejected at the Canadian boarder and seems like you messed up there by lying to the boarder guards. Looking at the other posts you made, it seems you are super smart/hardworking (ie getting a non poker job post black Friday) so just stop making bad decisions. I know I never did when I was your age. "Old man yells at cloud" etc

This made me smile. Even if it's true in poker years.

First couple of days at the job were pretty good. It's a small start up so I build it all works out. Going to Austin next week.
Great stories in the thread lately.

Yea I think the owners are just trying in their own ways to help clean up the system. I wouldn't have pursued it even if I had the badge #'s.

Nice amount of heart going through all those ****shows of threads looking for that story . That was quite the trag, was soon after BF when there wasn't a clear, correct way of handling yourself at the border and I was told by a few different people that got in that they just lied and to do so myself, and I just blindly listened. Lessons were learned then as well.

I think I've matured quite well over the past 2.5 yrs living in Mexico both WRT poker and life. I just try to take any bad happening and spin it in a positive way or take something from it that will help me in the future. At least these days it seems I'm avoiding most trouble

Lying to a boarder guard when they ask you that direct a question seems bad since with that specific of a question they probably have a reason for asking it. How you handled it before that was good. Just always be friendly, give as little info as possible but don't lie. I travel tons and have had 0 serious problems at the boarder ever.

Closest issue was some guy on a power trip told me that I was going into HIS country (Amurica) and I needed to prove that I wasn't going to stay there and I had ties to Canada. I told him I could pull up bank statements on my phone since I didn't have anything with me and that I own a place here and all my family lives here. That seemed to piss him off more and he said I should have physical proof with me to get into HIS country. I gave him the "yes sir, no sir" routine to stroke his ego a bit, even though the whole time I really wanted to punch him in the face, and he eventually let me through. Ever since then I've carried a copy of my bank statement and proof of residence. I've never been asked for either.

I bet I got in similar amounts of trouble . As long as you are aware and learn from it. It's easy to say that someone screwed you over, and you could be right, but that doesn't necessarily mean the situation wasn't avoidable.

Lacky,

Just a heads up:

Angry hockey fans sue arena over beer scam
03-14-2014 , 02:15 PM
In before tall skinny beers for $7 are the only option

So they are fixing the problem by charging $3 for 4 oz more? That's a scam too just to a slightly lesser degree.

Haha, that was great. I had to share that one.
