$130 buy-in live tournament that had 60 players with a 30K starting stack and 15-minute levels. Level 9 and blinds are at 1K/2K with a 2K BB ante. I'm short-stacked in the BB with 18K after posting. I have T9

UTG+1 raises to 8K. HJ calls. Button calls. UTG+1 seems like a pretty solid player and is the big stack with around 140K. HJ and button are both average regs with around 70K and 50K stacks respectively.

As played, I folded. But just wondering if anyone is calling OOP here or jamming?

Spoiler:
Flop came 936

So UTG+1 raised 4x? Jamming isn't awful, although it's high-variance-- you'll bust out a lot, but there's a chance you get heads-up with a ton of dead money in the pot. If he minraised, I'd look at calling for sure, and just open jamming boards like top pair, flush draws, 87x, maybe even J8x, probably JT8 or J98.

Is a 4x raise standard for UTG? If not, then I think fold is good, because live that raise size tends to narrow down players' range in my experience. (I see JJ a lot, but you might see other good-but-vulnerable hands in there too.) If you do call that off your stack, I think you just have to rip in any piece at all.

He was raising 3.5x - 4x on just about all of his opens. After the hand he announced he had pocket 5s.

Guess it's read dependent here. Like nath said, this 4x open is often a tighter range (and usually a range your T9hh isn't doing too well against).

But....if villain had been opening 3.5-4x for his entire playable range like you said, I think that jamming and hoping to go heads-up with dead money in the pot can be a good play here.

The pot is 29k and if you jam your 18k in there and get called by one player, say the original raiser, the pot will be (29k+18k+12k more to the original raiser = 59k). This instance is assuming the original raiser 4! isolated to get heads-up for you.

18k/59k = ~30.5% equity you need for a breakeven 3! shove here.

If original raiser just calls the 10k more, good chance the other two will follow along.

Now it'll be a 83k pot.

18k/83k = ~21.7% equity you need for a breakeven 3! shove in this instance.

Ah, then definitely jam and hope UTG isos so you can get in as a 52/48 favorite with a ton of dead money.

Seriously, though, I think there is merit to jamming if he's always doing this, and msw explained it well.

I am fine with a jam here I am not sure how you are getting a better spot but as was said by others you are busting here a lot.

Auto jam with T9s and 9 bb's. Especially knowing UTG is wide.

Lots of good possibilities here. Everybody calls and you can quadruple up with definitely at worst 20% equity. Or UTG+1 can shove and you get it HU to triple up with conceivably a 40% chance to win (or in this crazy case 50%).

But T9s is a great hand and you may never get an opportunity to shove first in anyway with a decent hand.

I have done this with 98s and the other guy shoved and I was up against 86s. I lost, yes, but proud of my short stack play.
