I just got run over in an MTT and the first hand set it up, so I thought I'd post it here.

Never had played against any at the table previously. Flop seems standard. Turn - I usually bet here, but check occasionally. My thinking on the river fold was...well, it was the first hand and I was reluctant to call an all-in with only top pair. Would you fold here against an unknown as played (checking turn)? Would you bet turn? Bet different amounts anywhere? TIA

Yatahay Network - 500/1000 NL (8 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

Hero (SB): 125 BB
BB: 125 BB
UTG: 125 BB
CO: 125 BB
BTN: 125 BB

5 players post ante of 0.12 BB, Hero posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.1 BB) Hero has A K

UTG raises to 2 BB, fold, fold, Hero raises to 6.2 BB, fold, UTG calls 4.2 BB

Flop: (14 BB, 2 players) A T 4
Hero bets 3.5 BB, UTG raises to 13.43 BB, Hero calls 9.93 BB

Turn: (40.86 BB, 2 players) J
Hero checks, UTG checks

River: (40.86 BB, 2 players) 5
Hero bets 12.54 BB, UTG raises to 105.25 BB and is all-in, fold

UTG wins 65.94 BB

Raise significantly bigger PF from OOP if you're going to 3-bet this.

I don't mind betting bigger on the flop this deep either.

I'm also not crazy about the river lead for 1/4 unless you're trying to induce a bluff. Maybe that's a bit of hindsight but given how connected the board is and the action so far it just seems like you're setting yourself up for this to happen.

Villain's line makes no sense considering you have the Ad. It'd be terrible to check a set or two pair on this turn and then jam on that river. It seems like he just decided your small bet sizes mean weakness. I'm inclined to think calling is correct given all of that.

Pre: you can 3-bet much larger, even to 10-12bb

Flop: your cbet is tiny with the stacks this deep. Calling the raise looks good.

Turn: you say you would normally bet here, leading into the aggressor? That seems questionable, I think it's a range check

River: You need to check to call pretty much any bet or bet to call pretty much any raise imo. Ad is powerful here, and as nath points out that line makes no sense. Maybe they have KQdd exactly but meh, if so then wp to them.

I feel like even KQdd should bet the turn here, given that OP called the flop raise-- given the action here OP's hand is almost certainly at minimum AQ, which should call at least one more bet, and with a bet it's also easier for villain to ultimately get it in against the top of OP's range.
