Borrowing owls are cool, I used to see them a great deal when I lived in the Southwest.

Today is one of those great days on the coast, no wind, sunny and warm, summertime weather comes in late fall around here as Ray can verify. Went for a morning hike and from a cliff side viewpoint, I spied a bunch of harbor seals basking in the sun. Also saw a whole herd of oyster catchers, easily recognized by their bright orange beaks, stampeding over a rocky area in search of elusive prey. Quite a sight!

yea on nice fall days not much beats the coast of oregon. even the change of colors in the northeast of the hardwoods doesnt compare to how it makes you feel.

i've never been fortunate enough to see the fall colors in places like Vermont or New Hampshire, but driving down a road from the I-5 corridor to the coast this time of year is pretty amazing, especially since most of these roads are built along rivers. Umpqua, McKenzie, Siuslaw, Alsea, Coquille, Rogue, etc.

oregon does get its share of good fall colors. it just doesnt have the vast amounts of hardwoods like in the northeast.
you live in a primo spot for sure.

obviously oregon forests are all about the maples and evergreens
no wonder how UofO picked their school colors.

I'm having a beer with seafood on the dock on a beautiful fall day on the coast. Take out, of course, but there are picnic tables on the dock by the restaurant. Some wind but it is protected here from the cold north wind. If the wind was from the south, always warmer, it would be fairly uncomfortable. As is, it is very pleasant right now, and since the sun is booming down, actually warm and comfortable.

I've been doing a lot of hacking and cutting and burning about the homestead the last few days. Burned up two large piles of branches and other debris in large fires that added toxic fumes and smoke to the Earth's atmosphere to amp up global warming and the general demise of this sickening ball of rock vomit that incessantly orbits an equally sickening fiery ball of nuclear fusion. Pics possibly, if I find the time.

Continuing to burn! Three days in a row this week. Today’s pile was smaller. No owls.

Beautiful day on the coast; surfers out and about sliding on the waves. Commercial Crabbing season won’t start until Dec 16 at the earliest. Quite a few people around, even a few from Oregon to mix it up with all the Californians and other out of state maggots.

season usually is scheduled to start dec. 1st. but usually delayed as if the meat in them is a low count they delay the season until they fill out some.

that gives the recreational crabbers in the bays more chance to get them. once the commercial season opens they slaughter them and it makes for lousy crabbing.

One of my cats killed a ruby-crowned kinglet, thus ridding my property of a supercilious bird that was polluting my airspace with its vile and insidious occupation.

Those tiny thugs are always hopping around in the plum tree outside my office window. Very distracting. Send your cat.

Finally, the river(s) came up and have some real flow - it has been a dismal year so far for Salmon fishing. But a last big slug of fish should come in this last week of the year.

the word now is steelhead.
go catch one or two of those hogs for winter chow then get the steelhead. the run should be starting right after the rain and the river falls. no one else will be fishing for them till the chinook are done.

Oh man give me some river trout.

Zeno can you give some pyro advice to a novice?

Im at my in-laws in northern France. We had to cut down an oak and walnut tree. We have a ton of branches I’ve put into a couple of large piles. I’ve been trying to burn these huge bundles but it’s just to wet to get these piles going. Any advice?

Pictures aren’t very good but it a pile, about 8’ high and 8’x15’. Do I need to wait to summer?

Nah...that is mostly little stuff and even if green will burn easily. Use wads of rags soaked in gasoline, diesel, and/or used oil and stuff inside and light. Stand back. Use a flame thrower if necessary or blowtorch. Stuff an old tire in the middle. France is so polluted no one will notice anyway.

yea once you get it burning in the middle it dries it all out quickly and you will be more worried about the blaze.
send zeno pics please.

I plan on having a rousing New Year, and a slapdash 2021, W.C. Fields style:
