gulp camo sand worms are the bait of choice for perch in the ocean. or razor calm necks, and sand shrimp. but the clam necks and worms stay on the hook.

So a fishing boat (large one, 64 footer) caught on fire and ended up washing up on a beach north of my location. The boat was not from the local dock. The crew were safely evacuated by the coast guard. The boat broke up and was on fire a week ago when I was hiking near the same beach. I saw the black smoke and figured it had to be a boat because a fire in driftwood does not produce black smoke. The black smoke was from the boat and diesel that was burning. It is now being cleaned up and the boat cut up and removed as much as possible. There is also some environmental clean up going on. Progress is slow.

The boat beached near some snowy plover habitat. Personally I don't give a hoot about the stupid snowy plover and hope they go extinct so I don't have to hear the sobbing world savers whine about them. We can't walk in certain beach areas during breeding season because these oh so sensitive plovers will supposedly undergo some terrible trauma and stampede into the ocean and die. Or they can't have sex if some human is watching them. Die you stupid birds if you can't abide change or adapt; you deserve to go extinct and good riddance.

Wine festival and arts/crafts selling in a town south of here this weekend and will be attended by all the idiots that think this is a big event and worth seeing - including me. Something to do while the rain falls and drunks also fall and hit and the sidewalk. If some California maggots attend, I can abuse them and call them names and tell them to get the hell out and go back to their socialist utopia and rot.

So much for the local news.

the snowy plover might end up extinct anyway. too bad they are a great little bird that nest in the sands above the water line up near the vegetation. mostly it is idiots that dont control their dogs that are ruining their nests. if i see one i call it in and they fence of the area so people leave them alone.

the beaches that let dogs run amok have the least amount of shorebirds there and also the most inconsiderate people.

and leave the baby sea lions alone the mother has not abandoned them.

I only shoot the guilty.

My garden is doing very well- I'm going to have oodles of delicious strawberries. The Gravenstein apple tree had numerous blossoms and I anticipate a good crop. The pear tree is gone- it never produced anything so i killed it. It's firewood now, stacked near my shop. That's how things work on my homestead.

The Wine Festival was impressive, even if small. Great wines, good food, free music that was also surprisingly good. I purchased two bottles of excellent wine and I also received this wonderful wine glass as part of the entrance fee. It's great that I live in such a sophisticated location.

I aren't up to speed on many things, especially sand stuff, if you are referring to sand art and other artsy beach glop. Only artists I know is myself. Got many projects going in my shop and others on the drawing board. I'll be raking in thousands soon enough.

Rain returned after that nice hiatus of sunny weather. Californians are everywhere, it is disgusting but short of shooting them there is little you can do to curb the influx, both tourists and the movers north.

you need to be thinking of what artist moniker you will use.

Every spring small jellyfish (Velella Velleha) wash up on the west coast (Oregon and Washington), and in other locations, and litter the beaches. They also have quite the smell after a few days. Currently this is happening in my neck of the Beach.

I want to be you when I grow up.

The Oregon coast is beautiful, I think I’ll join the Californians and move there. As soon as I make just a little more of this Texas oil money.

Garden Porn as requested:

Overview: Onions, potatoes, strawberries in foreground, etc

Different profile of Overview, more rows of strawberries and larger plants are blueberries and raspberries. Lots of potatoes in foreground; planted four types all doing well.

Peas

Warmer weather crops do not do well around here, nights are too cool. May put up a small green house next year to grow tomatoes and green beans and other warmer weather veggies.

Do you really think that fence is tall enough to keep the deer out?
Zeno: Swinging the World by the Tail Quote
06-05-2019 , 10:26 PM
Just high enough. You don't even want them to try. The deer are fanatics around here, and I have a constant herd of 7-8. The Elk could bull it over but they don't, plus they mostly hang out further up river.

7 foot high for deer, or a double fence a few feet apart 6 feet high on the last one.

i got 50 of them that live at my place.

When’s deer season there? Good eating.

Ray is correct that a seven-foot fence is adequate. Mine is roughly 8-ft high. After noting the slope/angle of the garden setting and doing the math with my lighting brain, I determined that purchasing 10-ft poles (the corners are a cut up leftover telephone pole) that are installed two feet in the ground with concrete would provide the necessary height, and with enough room for required adjustments because of slope etc. as necessary.

Also, noting my good money sense and knowing that poles come in two foot increments, purchasing the ten-foot treated poles was the best value for the money. You never want to build a fence and find out it is too low for what you required. Only a city slicker would do that. Or some fool from Montana.

You could do one six-foot fence and then add a 1.5 foot Y shaped top portion with barbed wire attached along both sides of the Y. But that is a pain in the ass to do and why be elaborate when simpler is just as good. But I've seen it done that way and people also attach old tin can lids to the top part with string and wire to supposedly further distract the deer (and birds). Again, too elaborate. Many miss that the bottom part of the fence needs to be keep out the racoons, foxes, dogs and other smaller animals. So very closely spaced barbed wire for the first one foot near ground is a good idea.

Fall, usually October-November. Some early one- week season for bow & arrow and for black power gun hunting. Many deer around here are so tame I could brain them on the head with an axe. Poaching is also very common. Gunfire at 2 am (very common) is either a deer being killed or your neighbor shooting some relative.
