Finally had chance to check out bitcoin for the first time in a couple of days - just going to post some stuff for my notes ...

Breakout after a period of low volume convergence?

Is the volume strong enough to buy?

Some promising rsi momentum on the 1month timeline, and high short-term volume on the 1hr, 6hr, 1day, 3day graphs - but not the 7day and 1month?

Maybe will help to watch how big/small the sell-off is, now that rsi is 80 across all the timelines? Weak selling = buy?

Strong buying and weak selling = buy?

Gosh, hope bitcoin's having a post-holiday rally right now, because it looks like my Bitfinex account is still working from the US after all

Bought 1btc at $15k - GL to all of us with some bitcoin right now!! Will monitor the charts for signs that things might be shifting ...

Hmm - looks like there's room for more buying, but nobody is - looks like the rally may have stalled on low volume?

Current price: $15.1k ... profit of $100 minus fees lol ...

Am seeing one of those pennant flags forming on the 6hr timeline - that's supposed to be a good sign that the breakout's about to continue ... hopefully that's the case?

Added one more bitcoin at $14.9k, based on the Kelly Criterion? Gosh - hopefully the price doesn't proceed to tank and never recover

Oh well, if this winds up losing me $, will look over the signs and try to see what may have been wrong, and will use this as a learning experience

Am still hodling! +1hr is such a long time for me to be hodling, so ya am pretty hopeful about how things look right now! Hopefully people may just be waiting for things to cool off a bit on the 1 day timeline before they buy some more?

While waiting for things to move upwards, was looking around the internet to see if there were any great post holiday deals to be had - so far it seems like the prices are more or less the same as they've been since Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Anybody finding any deals?

More notes to self:

Low volume - is $15k some sort of cap? Maybe should have waited for the previous high to be breached more solidly?

Good sign though that the price isn't dropping either? Maybe okay to buy at this price?

More notes to self:

This bull flag on the 1-day timeline looks just like the one on my ripple graph, that didn't go down much and finally went up after about a week? Hopefully bitcoin will go up as well - hopefully sooner?

Very low volume.

Woke up to see bitcoin up ~$850, so my bitcoin (paper) profits combined with my baby-sitting money from last night is now up to $1.8k +$0 = ... thank goodness auntie seems to have had some nice luck with investing this year

More notes to self:

So are these recreationals who have put all the sell orders in at $16k?

rsi does appear to be is getting high on the 1 day timeline ...

... as well as the 7 day ...

Looks like there's still so many buyers that the price is able to stay at the $15.8k level without dropping down. Perhaps important to watch to see if the same thing happens at ~$16.8k, or if the price starts to turn back towards $15k?

More notes:

Price dropped down to $15.4k - rsi on the 1 day is now starting to look like bearish divergence. Volumes appear to be low - there still a little room for growth, but is the rally perhaps starting to show signs of exhaustion now?

Okay, sold my 2 bitcoin at $15.7k, so that's US$1.5k of actual profit was able to lock in, in under 12hrs

Guess there's different styles of investing, and everybody has to find ways that work for them and what they feel comfortable with. Seem to personally be happier to just duck in when things look good, and duck out when would maybe feel more comfortable spending the afternoon sightseeing, without worries of whether bitcoin variance is on another lollercoaster?

It feels like $1.5k of profit in under 12hrs is a super nice amount of profit for a recreational type person like me - am very happy to have made that much, mostly while sleeping!

PS. The price could still continue to go up - am not totally sure of my chart-reading and stuff

The graphs look much better now - will see if maybe the price winds up hanging around $15.6k for the afternoon?

If everything looks good, would be lovely to try buying back in later tonight?

It's a bit chaotic around here with two little guys running wild in the background half the time - didn't even remember putting in this order, but it looks like was able to pick up 1 bitcoin for $15.5k a couple of hours ago?

Guess that means am back on bitcoin watch tonight Things don't look quite the same as yesterday, so am not so sure of the direction things may wind up going? It would be nice if the price were to go up to $16.9k or so - but maybe things could go back down as well, am not sure?

My dad and i had a little father daughter time together walking around downtown LA, while my mom and brother went to a modern art exhibit. Guess downtown is where many of the government buildings and convention centres are, so there wasn't a ton to see - but the weather was gorgeous, so it was lovely just having the chance to stroll around and soak up the sun

My feet are a little on the narrow side, so the shoes that fit me best are a bit less common and a bit more pricey. Pricey to the point of being gift-worthy! Asked for a pair of New Balance running shoes this year, and Santa was kind - so today was also a chance to try out the new shoes as well, and they're super comf

Anyways, so yeah not too much to see downtown - the food scene doesn't seem to be as creatively gourmet as things seemed to be in NYC. But there's all these outdoor patios, so today we had lunch alfresco on the sunny patio outside the Central Market ...

Then we took a little cable car up to the museum area ...

... which was next to that interesting-looking Disney Concert Hall ...

Then my dad and i headed down through the city park and past City Hall to a section called El Pueblo that was the site of the old city hall back when California was still part of Mexico, or something like that? Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be too many historical buildings left from the past - so they set up some stalls and stuff that reminded me quite a bit of Cancun on spring break, minus the tequila shots Unfortunate that they weren't able to preserve the old architecture - that would have been interesting to see ...

Gosh, there doesn't seem to be too much happening with bitcoin right now - guess the price isn't going up, but it's not going down either ... would be lovely to see it go up again soon!

Just bought one more bitcoin at $16,281 - so nice to see the rally continuing, wheee!

One thing though - not totally sure, but it looks like the price may be close to hitting the 'overheated' mark on some of the longer timelines? Like sometimes when the 7 day rsi heads towards 80, it seems like there can sometimes be sudden sell-offs? So maybe if there's one around $17k or $18k - guess the price could wind up going back down as low as something like $15k, before going back up again?

Guess may try to sell close to the next $1000 mark like this morning - and then will watch and see if things look like they may continue to go up? Unless the price cruises right on through $17k and sails all the way up to $18k or higher? Which would be awesome!

Gosh, so lovely to see bitcoin on a tear again

My nephews and i were trying to put together some Legos before supper - haven't played with Legos since was about their age, so was a little rusty and could totally relate to that feeling of overwhelm that the Lego kid seems to be experiencing upon opening the package, as captured in Step 2 of the instruction booklet lol ...

Am looking over the rest of the instruction booklet while watching the bitcoin graph - gosh, hope there's enough interest to get the price all the way up to $17k tonight ... that would be lovely!

Ahhh, wound up selling at $16,288 - looks like there's been hardly any buy orders placed at $16k, so maybe that may be it for the rally tonight?

Then again, maybe not - who knows

Looks like the total profit for the past day wound up somewhere around $2.3k? Could have wound up with more if had sold around $16.5k, but was holding on hoping the price would go all the way up to $17k. Oh well, +US$2k of profit in 2 day is lovely ...

Night everybody

More notes to self:

Is what happens next still up in the air?

1. Possible signs of an ongoing rally (?)
  • downturn appears to have stopped at ~$15k?
  • the rsi numbers across all the timelines all look much better now, so it looks like there may be much more room for more growth now?

2. Is this reason for concern though?
  • bearish divergence on the 1 month timeline
  • is that because of progressively decreasing buy volumes?

Does a drop down to $14k maybe open the door to a drop lower, to maybe $12k? Is lower still possible?

3. Or may things just stay around these levels for a while?
  • is trading volume still a bit low?

SUMMARY: Does it look like maybe the market right now is mostly maybe pros and panic sellers? Although the selling appears to be not too heavy? So maybe may the price possibly go up and down between around maybe something like $15k-ish and $16k for a while, or something like that?

Signs of a new pattern - maybe a drop below ~$14k? Or a rise above $16.5k?

We're taking today off to relax and putter around the neighborhood - so had time to do some bitcoin this morning

Guess we may be going out for lunch in a bit, and then may be going for a stroll along the beach, or something like that?

Selling doesn't look super heavy - but buying looks very anemic. Prices still appear to be holding ... sort of? But are starting to sag ...

Price now $14,838 - perhaps a slow drop down to as low as $11k is possible? Is even lower possible, am not sure??

Was helping roll the recycling bin back up from the curb today, when the neighbour's kitty came strolling through the rose bushes - started to squeal with delight at the sight of him, and then he came running over to me to get kisses! Wound up playing with him for about 15 minutes, until my brother peered out the window and said, 'eew' - he's not much of a cat person

Apparently golf is especially huge here in California, since it's warm and sunny year round - with it being so popular, guess they're also able to keep the prices down a bit, so then that helps keep it a popular past-time as well? My brother's been trying to teach his kids how to play golf, so we went to do some practice putting at a local course today, and it was pretty busy!

After that, we all went to go for a walk on the path down by the beach - there's so many fun outdoor activities to do when the weather's nice. It makes it so much easier to stay fit when physical activity hardly seems like exercise

Forgot to charge my phone and the battery died, so the pics from the walk taken on my iPad didn't turn out so great. Saw a couple of people surfing today - guess that's a hobby that's maybe only available in a select couple of parts of the world ...

We're only here for a couple more days - will be babysitting again tomorrow, and then we may go on one of those touristy studio tours on Friday? Then it'll be back to the winter wonderlands of home

Merry Christmas to you and yours Sam
The pics look great and the weather lovely. Wowee it seems its a far cry from the -10 your hometown’s getting.
Is this your first one in the sun?
Every year for as long as I can remember we’ve spent Xmas day outside, either beach or poolside, with the obligatory game of cricket for all and sundry thrown in for good measure (with me when not batting or bowling usually taking up a very strategic fielding position in the water.)
When I was younger I used to hear all the frosty the snowman, and white christmas jingles n think we were being ripped off somehow! And needless to say I’m still dreaming of my first white one.

Good luck with the new business adventure in the new year Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Hey Marke.!!

It sure has been neat to be able to have a warm and sunny outdoor Christmas, down by the beach and being able to stay active with games It's definitely a huge difference from the indoor white Christmases spent indoors cozied up by the fire that am used to!

S. California sounds like it might be a somewhat similar a climate and lifestyle to what you're used to? It seems to have an itty bit of the American NYC energy to it in certain parts of the city as well, with this being the entertainment capital of the world - although maybe in a bit more laid-back of a style?

We went on a sightseeing tour today, along with all the other tourists at the Walk of Fame - the area was as busy as Times Square in NYC, but the sidewalk was much smaller ...

They cut the top off a bunch of vans and filled them with seats, and then these vans with groups of 10 of us and a tour guide and an intercom drove us all around to see the main attractions ...
(didn't take a pic of the van - here's a pic from the internet)

So we got to see the Hollywood sign ...

And they would point out the occasional house in the middle of nowhere and say it was where so and so big celebrity lives - they said the house in the foreground is Bruno Mars', but who knows?

The tour also went through Beverly Hills, and they pointed out a bunch of place that had been in movies such as Pretty Woman - this may have been some sort of famous hotel, but can't remember? It's very pretty though

We didn't have a chance to catch a studio tour this time around, or go to Disneyland, or see a show taping - but those are some of the other things available to do, so that's kind of neat.

Maybe next Christmas It's supposed to be freezing back home But home is home, and am quite a homebody at heart, so while the chance to spend time in the sun with family was just lovely, am also excited to be heading home tomorrow - may burrow in and snooze until 2018! That could be fun!!

Great hearing from you marke. - thanks so much for the well-wishes Happy New Year to you as well!!

There's a stock picking contest in the Investing section, and everybody's supposed to try and pick 10 stocks - 5 longs and 5 shorts, or something close to that?

Will have to go back and double check the rules It's an interesting contest in so many ways, with the inclusion of multiple picks including shorts, and then there's been the chance to see what everybody else here at 2+2 has picked.

Everything's so much easier in life when things are on a heater Had such great luck with my stock market picks this year - although would have done very well just sticking with a DJIA ETF too ... is the market up something like 25% this year? The market maybe hasn't had a year this great in the past 20 years, since the dot-com boom?

Guess it's one thing to try and pick exceptional companies who stand a good chance of possibly outperforming the market when the market is already outperforming itself several times over Haven't actually had the greatest luck this year with trying to outperform the market in the times when the market was in a bit of a lull, like in the last 3 months of the year. So am feeling very unsure about how much risk should be trying to take to improve my gains in the next year, if next year maybe turns out to be a slow one after this year's big one?

There was hardly any risk at all in putting money on Facebook when everybody was so upbeat about the Trump tax cuts being enacted this year. But with them not set to go into effect until 2019, and with so many companies already with high valuations - maybe much more of a challenge to try and make money in a year where there's a chance things may be kind of flat?

There were two things that seemed like they might have promise for 2018 - can't seem to find the article where first saw this graph, but it looks like some people feel gold might be in a good position to rebound next year, if everything else stays a bit flat? Guess that would have to include cryptos though, so not sure about the chances of that??

So precious metals might be a potential 'long' - and then maybe a potential 'short' is maybe retail? Was reading that lots of people feel retail may continue to struggle because of the trend towards more online shopping, and because of heavy debt and rising interest rates. Guess a short of Sears in the middle of April this year would have done about as well as a purchase of bitcoin in October at around $4k, with like +300% gains ... or more? Is there any chance in the world Sears finds a way to recover and not go bankrupt this year? So maybe is there a chance there to make like 700% gains on SHLD, or something like that?

Shorting's a little scary, when there's always that chance of uncapped losses. It's quite frightening to look at Sears' graph from February to April, and try to imagine how that would feel if the same thing were to happen again, while short.

The contest starts in 2 days, but guess am mostly worried about what to pick for my real portfolio with the real $ in it - ugh, not so easy

Anyways, will be heading out to the airport early tomorrow morning, and won't be home until maybe 10pm or 11pm Toronto time, so tomorrow should be kind of a long day - should get to bed and try to get some rest ...
