Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Kind of felt like doing something different tonight - have seen some charities that have been able to do amazing things with very small amounts of money ... like guess an amount that may sometimes seem like it's too little to matter can sometimes be enough to make a difference, if used wisely?

BTC and BCH have been doing so well - it would have been fun to have been able to celebrate my first venture into bitcoin by picking up that map at the auction yesterday. But since that didn't go so hot (), maybe it might be kind of neat to see if there's any charities who accept bitcoin, that seem like they might be able to do a fair bit with just a small amount?

Someone at a bitcoin site for enthusiasts put together a huge list of charities that accept bitcoin, but these all seem to be for the US branches of international organizations only - hopefully the Canadian branches of the larger organizations like the United Way and the Red Cross will start adding bitcoin donations sometime in the near future?

Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Hey lumberajack!!

Thanks so much for the article link! It was great because it's super-long - with the intro, and then the discussion of the buzz. Liked the interview of the bitcoin user/hodler with the bitcoin hoodie, telling his story how he would take his girl out to Starbucks in 2014 and treat her to an egg sandwich and a coffee, and how the bitcoin he spent on those meals would now be worth $600 - wow, hopefully they at least got the fancy coffees with the chocolate shavings on top!

And also liked the big picture stuff about where bitcoin may be headed - and he said nice and clearly ...
Quote:
Some people, such as Mr. Antonopoulos, are not too troubled by the parallels between bitcoin and the dot-com boom. What's more important, they say, is the technology behind the movement: the blockchain.

"The space as it is today is a mess, but this exact same technology is going to radically transform a trillion-dollar industry within the next 10 years, without any doubt in my mind," Mr. Antonopoulos said.

Sure, a lot of people will lose money along the way, just like in 2000 when the tech bubble burst. There will be much "gnashing of teeth and rending of garments," Mr. Antonopoulos said. "It's exactly the same way we saw the internet develop – with a giant bubble that burned through a trillion [dollars] of investments."

But in the end, the internet went on to transform every facet of our lives.

"We had to go through that boom-and-bust cycle, and I think that's repeating now," Mr. Antonopoulos said.

Am never super confident with my investing stuff, since it's only been about a year - so have been reading everything have been able to get my hands on that mentions bitcoin. Time spent reading is probably time better spent than what was doing before, whaling away my chips at 2nl lol

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and post the link - hope you're managing to keep warm these days ... it's gotten so chilly out, brrr!!

Happy Friday!

Hey Hank - great news ... was able to find a transcript of the podcast, so am able to read it! Have that strange thing with my head where am not able to learn stuff very well when it's the spoken word

Anyways ...

The transcript's amazing! NPR seems to be next level It's very 'big picture', and learned a lot that had never heard before about the start of bitcoin - want to quote passages from the transcript, but there's so many passages, it would basically be half the article
https://www.npr.org/2017/11/09/56305...ck-information
  • the intro was great about how bitcoin has almost become something of a social movement
  • also hadn't heard that bitcoin grew out of a desire to be able to make financial transactions that couldn't be watched over by the government, that would hopefully be more reliable than big banks
  • and didn't know Satoshi's White Papers was a manifesto
  • that was an interesting observation by the journalist that reliable currency requires faith in the system
  • and that the final bitcoin won't be mined until 2140
  • then there were the interesting stories about how bitcoin has made it easier for people in some countries to sign up for Netflix, if it's hard in their country to get a bank account, etc.

This part was great - although, does he call people fish at the end

Wow, really hope they invite him back in a couple of months to perhaps do an update - it seems like it may be interesting hear more of his thoughts on where bitcoin may be headed?

Thanks Hank!!

Bitcoin Charities

Was just checking out some of the charities on the list that accept bitcoin - it's been lovely chance to hear peoples' stories, and see everybody working together to try to make things better in the world ...

1. Hunger
This food bank in Texas has an interesting story - it says that 2/3 of their clients have jobs, but are struggling in this economic climate with the rising costs of housing and healthcare. And a good portion are disabled veterans and retired seniors, some of whom are raising children or grandchildren.
https://www.centraltexasfoodbank.org/

And they manage to foster such a warm sense of community on their site - like when they ask for donations, they say that they want to spread hope for the holidays ...

It looks like they've established several corporate partnerships over the years, with companies like Starbucks and Whole Foods? And right now another charity is doing a donation match, so each donation will have double the impact.

They've received a top rating from Charity Navigator too - and are able to provide 80 meals for $10.

This was everything was hoping to be able to find in a charity Everything except the tax receipt

Really wanted to give donations in bitcoin - because it feels like a really good charity would know to hodl the donation. And then maybe a $10 could very quickly turn into much more?

2. Sustainable Economic Development
This charity's project was interesting - in partnership with Google, MIT, and Princeton, they've given several villages in Kenya cellphones, and instead of donating items they've been wiring the villagers cash and giving them advice on how to invest in their future.
https://www.givedirectly.org/

Guess it's an experiment with universal basic income?

Went to take a look at what sorts of charities were available here at home, and was disappointed to see that Wounded Warriors Canada got a D rating for spending 25% of donations on salaries Was hoping to be able to make a donation today, becasue they train emotional support animals to help offer comfort to combat veterans ...

Will continue my research on charities tomorrow

Bitcoin Cash Update

Not really sure what to say about my Bitcoin Cash - the bitcoin market seems to follow stock market news, so was guessing (?) that prices for Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash might start to turn around the following points, if markets continue to seem like they do when they're filled with professional traders, but who knows??

Bitcoin (BTC) Price Estimate (short-term): US$5k (?)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Price Estimate (short-term): US$3.5k-ish (?)

Account Update Below
Spoiler:
Am pretty eager to sell my BCH - it feels like the price could tank as soon as someone is able to find a way to speed up Bitcoin, and organize an update? Not sure how quickly someone might be able to do that??

Bitcoin Update

Looks like things took quite a turn while was asleep - after going on a tear all day yesterday, it looks like Bitcoin Cash lost half its value in the matter of a very short time

Does it look like all the wild swings may have largely had something to do with the fork that's supposed to be happening tomorrow? Things happen so fast - it sucks to have to try to make $ choices with so little information about what might be happening. But decided to ditch my BCH and buy back into BTC - there's not enough $ to put a down payment on a condo anymore, but it would still enough to buy a car ...

Guess a beetle's not a lambo But am just a fish, and have only been investing in crypto for a little over a month - pretty sure am running above expectation as it is Also have to be pretty happy things are going okay, considering crypto's unregulated, there's sophisticated miners and hedge fund traders swimming in the pool, there may even be deep pockets or even governments manipulating prices, etc.

Tonight will have more time to read articles on the internet - then will have more of a chance to see if am able to see anthing that may help with figuring out what to do with my bitcoin?

Just washing my duvet before starting dinner

Was trying out a bunch of autumn veggies had never tried before for the last little while, like brussel sprouts and beets - they're not the most photogenic veggies though, so didn't post any pics

Am now trying out different flavours of chicken - picked up some sauces on the way home, to try to make indian or chinese. Have two chicken quarters - may try to make one of each, and see how they taste?
If they turn out tasty, can try making the sauces from scratch next time

Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

My duvet came out of the dryer all warm and snuggly - am tempted to try it out

Ahhh, will resist

The chicken turned out tasty, but very different from the way take-out seems to taste. Maybe it would have helped to marinate the meat in the sauce for a while before popping it in the oven? Will have to try that next time

New update on my bitcoin - any car purchase would now have to be downgraded from a beetle to a civic, because wound up buying high and selling low ... again

The civic's a cute car

With all my daily readings, guess have been sort of trying to find info that may help show if the market is more likely to go up or down in the short-term? Maybe sometimes nobody knows for sure - but sometimes there seem to be things that may make it more likely the price of bitcoin may go up instead of down ... like a scheduled fork, or a whole new group of investors, or stuff like that?

Have been trying to find articles that cover the views of everybody - miners, traders, exchanges, users ... even skeptics. Will look over the latest tonight - but with the way the prices have been going up and down and all around, it sort of seems like everybody may be a little bit unsure of what exactly has been happening, and where things may be headed at the moment?

Will see what am able to find - will report back in a couple of hours

Nightly Bitcoin Updates

Hey HUMBLE.!! Yes, my whole schedule got messed up because of the snafu, argghhh!

It sounds like lot of people suspect that some of the big bitcoin holders and miners like Roger Ver and Jihan Wu may have been responsible for the huge price swings over the weekend?

Although Forbes seems to be implying that even if there was some market manipulation going on, the cancellation of the Segwit2x fork did lay bare some shortcomings of bitcoin in its current state. And there now seem to be genuine ideological differences within the crypto community about where the various coins should go try to go moving forward?

People have started to write articles about ways to possibly make BTC faster - this one mentions the Lightning Network that someone mentioned the other day:
https://cointelegraph.com/news/light...lution-awaited

And this person says the Lightning Network is set to be implemented in Q2 of 2018, and mentioned another couple of options like Rootstock and Lumino:
http://www.newsbtc.com/2017/11/12/bi...tstock-lumino/

Have been wondering - if two people had the power to manipulate the market to this degree, and one had the motive - it seems like maybe he may be able to do it again, if there's a reason for people to believe that the rise in price could be substantive?

In addition to Roger Ver, there do seem to be others who believe there's room for BCH to be a potential alternative to BTC?:

So the schedule for tonight - was going to maybe do a little exercise biking before doing my nightly reading?

And then trying out a bitcoin donation should be fun! Will look through the rest of the list first, to see what other sorts of places are accepting bitcoin ... it's pretty cool that there's so many charities who are hip to the latest technology

Okay, here we go with the biking - gl me

Nightly Bitcoin Reading

Have some encouraging news for anyone who's eager to see bitcoin move onwards and upwards from the latest price swings. Yesterday's bitcoin articles seemed to want to try and process the big rollercoaster that bitcoin's price experienced on Saturday - but by today, most all of the articles appear to be back in hope/hype mode, excited for where bitcoin may be headed very soon?

A. Bitcoin Price Graph - Historical Patterns
1. Business Insider - http://www.businessinsider.com/bitco...charts-2017-11

The author of this piece notices that bitcoin's had double digit price drops almost every couple of months, for years ...

2. CNBC - https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/13/afte...ata-shows.html

And then this article notices that it's not uncommon for prices to have bounced back by 25% within 2 weeks, and for prices to be up over 60% after 4 weeks:

B. Near-Term (Possible) Increase of Professional Investor Activity
1. CoinDesk - https://www.coindesk.com/cme-ceo-bit...soon-december/

That big commodities exchange CME that announced a while back that they were going to offer bitcoin futures, today announced that they should be up and running by the second week of December. It sounds like people are expecting that futures may attract new investors, if they're able to buy derivatives to hedge against possible swings?

2. Reuters - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-in...-idUSKBN1DD2RE

A while ago, Goldman Sachs announced that they were looking into the possibility of opening a bitcoin exchange for their institutional investors - and this former Goldman Sachs employee today made a comment that seems to maybe make it sound like they might be up and running in the next 6 months?

Guess the first two articles maybe show that it may be better to buy sooner rather than later, and the third one may be a reason for the price to rise?

The only not so great piece of short-term news was the article with the daily technical analysis on CoinDesk - their projections based on past movements of the market seem to be right about 51% of the time ... so maybe a little better than guesswork?

Wasn't able to find very much about bitcoin cash at all. And am still doing research on charities - my attention was a bit scattered tonight May take some time over the next couple of days to read my marketing books?

Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Nice work. Do you think that btc and bch does or will continue to have an inverse relationship to one another? It seems like when the price of bch goes up, the price of btc goes down (and vice versa).

I wonder if btc and bch can coexist with one another like btc does with eth.

Or are they locked into civil strife forever?

Have a nice day, TrustySam. Enjoying your posts as always.
I did quite enjoy riding my road bike around town...

Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Hey HUMBLE.!!

That's a really great question - now that you mention it, do remember seeing some stuff on bitcoin cash the other day, where a couple of people were wondering that same thing? Will have to check my notes to see if am able to find the links - hopefully have not managed to lose them all ... again (d'oh! )

Wound up ditching my BCH a couple of days ago during all the turmoil - and then last night wound up buying some BTC back again, so am back on the bitcoin train again ...

Toot toot!

Have mostly just been looking at bitcoin articles - although now that you mention the relationship between BCH and BTC, maybe should try to look out for news on some of the other coins as well? If sometimes the price of some coins may be starting to affect the prices of the others?

Bike riding outdoors - that sounds nice! The best exercise seems to be the kind that doesn't feel like exercise It seems like lots of places have nice places to bike - such a nice way to enjoy the outdoors when the weather's nice ... is it still warm out where you're at? Am still going for walks outside every once in a while - but it's gotten colder, and can't seem to get my layering just right, so keep keep coming home half warm and half cold One thing that's been nice is that there's holiday lights up in the neighborhood already - it's a bit early, but they're always pretty to see

As always, thanks for the kind words HUMBLE.!! Am really enjoying your input as well, like your question today. And thanks so much to everybody else for all the extra links - there's so much info out there on bitcoin, it's so great to be able to pool resources with others. Hopefully with everybody's contributions, together will all be able to ensure that the money train keeps rolling right along? Toot toot!!

Will go look for those links on BCH before starting my nightly reading on BTC

Am in California. It is winter, but the weather is mild.
I looked into other coins to diversify a bit... While btc and bch were battling out, eth seemed less affected.

Re: Work Space for Learning How to Research Stocks

Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash - can the two co-exist, or will it be a zero-sum game?

Managed to find my links Coindesk posted a neat pic over the weekend that shows that inverse relationship between BTC and BCH ... it's quite striking, isn't it? ...

Although Crypto Coins News seems to feel it may be too early to tell for sure if this will turn into an either/or, even though the graph sure does make it look like a zero sum game ...
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/crai...r-was-bitcoin/

News BTC also seems to feel that so long as scaling issues plague BTC, it leaves a window of opportunity open for BCH?
http://www.newsbtc.com/2017/11/09/ki...-craig-wright/

On the other hand, Charlie Lee the creator of Litecoin says that because BTC and BCH share mining pools, there's really only room for one in the long-run:

Though Coin Telegraph notes that in the short-term, with the market cap of cryptos growing as a whole, today the two both appeared to make gains? (sample size of 1 day )

In another article from Coin Telegraph they say that there are investors who are now choosing to hodl both BTC and BCH?
https://cointelegraph.com/news/how-b...the-real-thing

Although it sounds maybe more like people may be hoping that if a couple of people with lots of coins was able to move the market before, they feel like it could happen again?

The difference in market cap is interesting - if the two do wind up having something of an inverse relationship, guess if BTC with a CAD$148bil market cap were to drop 10%, and if all of the $ went to BCH with a CAD$27bil market cap ... would that CAD$14.8bil create a gain of 50% for BCH? Or if people who are holding BCH decide to move into BTC, maybe it would take a relatively small number to cause big drops in price? (not sure? )

Was able to find several technical analysis things for BCH today - guess if they're similar in reliability of the bitcoin ones in predicting future price moves based on past performance, they may be about as reliable as 51% as well?

This one from Ethereum World News says a drop to US$1k for BCH is possible in the short-term, but feels like things could go either way after that?
https://ethereumworldnews.com/bitcoi...usd-hold-1000/

While Coin Desk seems to feel like US$1k may be as low as BCH goes?
https://www.coindesk.com/bchs-new-co...ited-downside/

Wasn't able to find anyone who mentioned why BCH is the only one that seems to have lose when BTC gains, unlike ETH - maybe it is too soon to tell if the zero-sum trend will continue, but maybe their shared history makes them too similar for most people to see a need to hold both?

Winter in Cali sounds lovely HUMBLE. My brother lives out there - was looking at the weather charts, and it says the daytime high in So Cal is 70° in December ... will be interesting to experience Christmas in a t-shirt this year
