Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

thanks for the update! Hope the transition is going as well as possible, under the circumstances.

You may have discussed this earlier itt or elsewhere, but what kind of office work are you doing?

Thanks guys!

I sell replacement parts for automated factory machines. I'm the guy who has to tell the facilities manager that their million dollar machine anchoring their production line is going to be out of commission for 6-8 weeks while we wait for their $100 part to come in from Japan.

What I've learned from day one back at the desk: problems and complications at the office which I used to treat like insurmountable catastrophes now pale in comparison with getting wafflestomped in a 350bb pot by a snickering drunk hitting his two-outer on the river.

It seems that poker has given me some perspective on what a truly bad day at work can entail.

Curious do you keep inventory for any of this? Seems an opportunity for parts that you know youíre going to sale based on historical demand. Can charge a premium for it.

Also put your parts on Amazon.

International shipping is still in disarray thanks to the pandemic, costs are way up and lead times are unreliable.

The US Postal Service used to be the cheapest and most reliable international package shipper out there, but they've tumbled into the shitter in the last few years.

We keep a certain amount of inventory, and a lot of it is on amazon, eBay and our own web store, but there are a large number of items in this business that only sell once every few years or so, and inventory taxes take a big bite out of those if you keep them on the shelves for too long.

Damn yeah, you guys know what your doing, no part-time consulting work for me.

Seems like a supply issue. Hopefully things start to improve. Business picks up and you get your health insurance and a nice company ride.

Just got home and Dad's on the phone with Apple tech support (I checked with Mom and he called them; they didn't call him, thankfully). From what I can tell from looking over his shoulder he picked up a virus, which is an impressive feat on an Apple laptop.

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

My old nemesis and main irritant at work is the goddamn radio station. I've mentioned it once before: it's a so-called variety station that only plays the same 9 pop and R&B hits over and over again into infinity.

This station is still cycling some of the songs that drove me nuts three years ago. God forbid they spend an errant dime on any new inventory. Repetition of songs bothers me more than it should, and I believe it likely that I have some undiagnosed autistic or Asperger's symptoms revolving around it.

In any case, I'm outvoted, as everyone else in the office just loves hearing the same tired chewed up bubblegum hour after hour, day after day.

So here's my plan:

Every Friday, turn the volume down one pip. Just one pip. Just once a week. See how long it takes for someone to discover it. Once it's discovered, wait 4 weeks, then start over again.

Too bad the workers seem to be so binary (we can only play one station, let's have a vote.)

Better plan would be to let each person have a day to pick the station in rotation. Everyone gets introduced to something they wouldn't normally hear. They might like it.

We had a lab at my work where they did this.

SJ just get some headphones and play your own music on the computer.

Yep, that's where the idea came from Two jobs ago, us computer nerds were (rightly) separated in our own little area. Mike would dial up whatever service he had, set the channel to the selection of whoever's turn it was, and run it through the speakers.

Some days country, some days classic rock, etc, etc.

I hope your plan works. I also hate hearing the same songs over and over again. I'd do anything to stop the suffering: wear earplugs, sabotage the radio, or do what Fidstar said.

Good idea, but there are no speakers for internet radio and no radio stations in range that I like, other than NPR, which I wouldn't ask anyone else to listen to.

Also a good idea, but I do a fair amount of phone work, as well as frequently collaborating with my bosses and co-workers, so it's not feasible in my spot.

I used to work in the construction business.
You walk into a job site, and the same music is playing on the same station for 30 years straight. To me, it means that those people listening to the same thing their whole life, that they haven't grown as people at all.

Classic Rock is the absolute nut low.
Great music, but can you listen to the same songs for 30 years straight over and over?

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

I picked up $85 in a freeroll on ACR, finishing 3/2589. So now I have a micro-bankroll to try to grow into robusto.

And that's good because the Springfield MGM isn't going to decide on either reinstating or obsoleting their poker room until December. They're feeling the dollars per square foot pull of putting down slots everywhere. Every other live poker venue is at least 1 1/2 hours from me, so I'm counting on MGM to bring it back.

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

I used $3.30 from my new micro-roll and bought into a satellite, and now I have an $88 tourney ticket. I'm not sure which tournament that might be for, but it's probably for a juicy Sunday offering.

My parents told me not to make plans to play my "games"--sprinkle a level amount of condescension and disapproval between those scare quotes--this Sunday, as we are shopping for my mattress that day.

Sigh.

Fortunately, I will be dispensing with this second bout with adolescence in a little more than a week.
