Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

Day 8/10

A storm came through last night and blew out the alarm system--standard stuff--something always breaks when the owners are gone. It's basically a bad beat, one that's only more memorable due to the absence of the owners.

I received a purchase order on the fax machine today, the first one I can remember coming from that medium since around 2012. I dug through the desks before coming up with a dusty 'confirmed' stamp, and I faxed back the confirmed PO.

It came from a US branch of a large Japanese company. The Japanese still love their fax machines--which is baffling. I read somewhere that the US medical community still relies heavily on the machines as well, to our detriment, I'm sure.

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

Here's fun: One of the vendors from Taiwan has a crush on me; she's the one who visited me in Las Vegas a few months ago. She knew that I was working back at the old business for two weeks so she sent some cookies along with her latest parts shipment, which is now stuck in customs in Anchorage due to a lack of documentation for the cookies.

Even though they're an obvious gift with no resale value, the cookies are supposed to be accounted for when they're included within a shipment over a certain amount. So now I have to get the name of the cookie manufacturer and their value from our vendor with the ladyboner or my old bosses won't get their parts.

I keep imagining a message that says:

"This shipment uses cookies. Do you accept cookies from this shipment?"

Yeah I thought it was some obscure customs clearance jargon, and I was about to start googling for cookie protocols and solutions when it hit me that it was straight cookies.

^That song has not aged well--not that it was any great shakes to begin with.

Fred Durst was never a particular talent; I think most of us can agree on that. But I liked Wes Borland. I liked his look. Back in the day, he had a compelling stage presence, and I felt that he could shred at at least a journeyman level.

Now I'm back from a somewhat prolonged YouTube spin through Borland's stuff, trying to find something of his to showcase some elusive feature which had made me like him in the first place, and sadly I came up with nothing. I can't point out anything of his that impresses any more.

Day 9/10:

I've gained 10lbs from driving everywhere instead of walking, along with my new habit of drinking a tall glass of cheap whiskey every night to wind down after work. I'm buried in work and I'm sick to death of country music. When I head back to Las Vegas next week, it will be with a new appreciation for sitting around, playing cards and shooting the ****.

After my first month on CV lockdown I had lost one pound, but had to let my belt out two notches. Just sitting around turned me into a lard-ass and it didn't take long to do it.

Muscle weighs more than fat. Yesterday I picked up sticks in my brother's yard for 10 minutes, after which my back started aching. I am very much out of shape.

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

I'm coming up on my 8000th post. I've always done something special for each 1k milestone, but it's always taken a lot of work and inspiration, and lately my muse has been absent, or at least distant.

I might do a half-read review of Walden and how I can relate it to my solo journey to Las Vegas, or I might just ignore the milestone and shitpost something on BBV. I haven't decided yet.

Noted.

Well, I made my first ever 1/4 pot c-bet.

Hmmmmm. I wonder if this could have any application in a live Vegas 1-2 game...

I think it might be harder to fold to a 1/4 pot c-bet (e.g. $6) live with everyone present and potentially judging you to be a supernit, compared to online where you have a greater degree of anonymity.

But...get a call and then bomb the turn for a near pot bet, and we might be on to something. I was seeing this play before the 'rona hit, but I hadn't integrated it into my game yet. I plan on giving it a try when I get back to LV this week.

Re: Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

“We all wear masks, but it's the one we choose to wear that makes a difference.”
― Kim Yannayon

The first leg of my flight back to Las Vegas stalled out on the tarmac when one of the passengers refused to wear his mask. The flight crew promptly summoned the Connecticut State Police and three 6'2" (188 cm) gym-muscled brutes decked out in full dreadware boarded the plane and talked the mask-shy contrarian into changing his stance.

The delay had me executing some quick leg work in Denver to catch my connecting flight. Somehow my luggage made it along as well, which is a credit to Denver's huge and incredibly complex baggage system.

On the leg from Denver to Las Vegas my seatmate in first class arranged his mask in what I call the dicknose style, in that the offending protuberance was fully exposed, rendering the mask useless to all but the most dedicated of mouth-breathers. Before we took off, the flight attendant politely asked him to cover his nose, and he complied--for all of five minutes. After that I had to catch the attendant's attention and furiously side-eye at dicknose until the attendant asked him again--nicely still--to pull his mask up.

Later on, the same attendant gave me two mini-bottles of whiskey when I asked for my drink, which saved me the embarrassment of having to ring for a refill on that 2 hour flight. They take good care of you in first class.

After that it was back down to Earth, and public ground transportation. And I found out that I was due for another Bus Incident. I was minding my own business on the bus, as always, when some spindly straw-haired maskless greaseball in his 40's sidled up to a seat near me and said, "Can I ask you a question?"

I knew exactly where this conversation was going. He was just about quivering in anticipation of pulling off another IRL mask-freedumb troll. I could tell that he'd memorized lines from all the stupid Facebook posts on his moron Facebook feed, and he was more than ready to regurgitate them all on me, but I wasn't having it.

"No!"

"Is there a reason why you're wearing a mask?"

Never mind that he was the only one on the bus who wasn't wearing one, and that he must have been wearing one when he got on the bus, or he would not have been allowed to board.

I'm not proud of my response. The French have a term called l'esprit d'escalier, or the "staircase mind," for when you're stuck for a good response to an argument being leveled at you at dinner, and you think of the perfect comeback only after you've left the meal and when you're walking back up the stairs, alone.

So I said, "I have nothing to say to you. Leave me the **** alone, ****ing moron."

I said that, and I got up and moved to the front of the bus. I didn't listen to his reply, didn't let it register, because I knew that one more round of dialog between us would have likely ended in fists, and going to jail with two weeks of luggage in tow would have been awkward to say the least.

So here is my staircase reply: Pushing for the right to go out in public without a mask is tantamount to pushing for the right for everyone to drive drunk. When people drive drunk, we don't care if they hurt themselves; we care about the innocent people who they injure and kill. It's the same with the virus.

And actually, advocating for not wearing a mask is probably worse than advocating for drunk driving; for two reasons. (1) Drunk driving is not contagious, and (2) Drunk driving deaths in the USA in all of 2018 totaled 10,511. In 2020 we are currently at 180,000 Coronavirus deaths in just over 6 months.

Glad to hear you're back safely in Vegas. GL if and when you get back to the tables. Sorry to hear about the unfortunate exchange with the anti-masker. At least you turned the exchange into a good story. Well-told and well-written, as usual!

My staircase answer is: "Because I'm not an *******". But that may not be accurate.

Recently, I was sitting on the front porch surfing the internet. Some random person came up the sidewalk, introduced herself as with one or the other of the major political parties, and asked if I had time for a few questions.

My response same as yours, "No".

The more accurate answer to said idiot would be:
"To protect idiots like you."
