Yesterday I played well and I ran well. That always makes for a nice day at the office.
At the freeroll, I picked up enough cards and chips early on to be able to shift over to an aggro bully play style, but even with that image I still picked up folds later on when I needed them. At the cash game I was mostly card dead early, and I came across as a lockdown nitcake, but even with that image I still picked up calls later on when I needed them. On days like this, poker feels like the easiest game in the world.
At the freeroll I made a fun play that I liked a lot. I try not to post a hand if it might be seen purely as brag, but this one was unconventional enough that people can argue that it was a bad play, and therefore it might be of interest.
To understand the play, we need to have a quick look at the tourney structure. The freeroll had 57 runners. Spots 1-10 were paid $500 each, 11-20 got $300 and 21-30 got $200. We played the hand near the bubble, with 32 left. Blinds were 1000/2000 (no antes) on 15 minute levels, average stack was 17,800, or around 9 bb.
I was the second stack at the table with 42,000. UTG was the big stack with around 46,000. Both of us had enough chips to comfortably glide across the first bubble, if that's what we wanted to do. UTG is a Harrahs reg and a good player. I'd put him in the top 5 on the promo grinder circuit.
So yeah, clash with a good player who opened UTG and is sitting on a covering big stack near the stone bubble.
UTG opens 4000, and MP shoves for 18,000. I'm on the button with 42,000 and pick up Q
Q
.
If the freeroll had only one tier of payouts--say all 30 players would get $350 each--then I would be turbo mucking on the bubble here. As it is, with three tiers of payouts, this hand is too good to fold when I have 21 bbs, bubble or no. I want the $500 top tier payout, no exceptions. It's a standard reshove.
I flatcalled the 18,000, with a plan to muck it with no regrets if UTG reshoved when it got back to him.
Bally's and Harrahs: 8 hours (Harrahs freeroll +$460):
+$706
