”Every run is a work of art, a drawing on each day's canvas. Some runs are shouts and some runs are whispers. Some runs are eulogies and others celebrations. When you're angry, a run can be a sharp slap in the face. When happy, a run is your song. And when your running progresses enough to become the chrysalis through which your life is viewed, motivation is almost beside the point. Rather, it's running that motivates you for everything else the day holds.” ~ Dagny Scott Barrios

The FBI has always been the nemesis of criminals. Today, the FBI is under attack by the president of the United States. The president assails the FBI because he resents or fears the Bureau’s independence, its fairness, its professionalism, its competence, and above all its values. This confrontation is part of my story too. ~ Andrew G. McCabe in the Author’s Note to The Threat

I finished reading a book entitled The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, written by former acting director of the FBI Andrew G. McCabe. I was looking for a book to read from the public library. I ran a search on the word “marathon” and this book showed up. I had no idea what this book had to do with marathons, but I decided to check it out. I thought it would probably be interesting.

As I had anticipated the book has very little to do with running. McCabe discloses that former FBI Director Louis Freeh was a runner who liked to get up early and run no matter where he was. Because of Freeh’s position, this meant an advance team and a security detail planned the route and ran with Freeh. Running is part of the rigorous training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. McCabe also spends a few paragraphs telling about his training for and competing in an Ironman triathlon. He says very little about his training other than he used a sharpie to write “Patience” on one forearm and “Discipline” on the other. He trained hard and “finished the triathlon in a respectable time.” McCabe also wrote several pages regarding the FBI’s investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The Threat is an interesting book. It begins with McCabe being told to report to Attorney General Jeff Session’s office. At this meeting McCabe is told that James Comey has been fired for allegedly mishandling the Hillary Clinton email investigation. McCabe is told he will be the acting director until they find a replacement for Comey. Later, McCabe is called by President Trump who asks him to come to the Oval Office for a meeting. McCabe describes this meeting with President Trump as a loyalty test. “And the loyalty that was demanded was personal loyalty, not loyalty to an office or a set of ideals.”

The book then goes back to 1996 when McCabe first became part of the FBI, and tells McCabe’s story regarding his twenty-one-year FBI career. McCabe describes the training that every new agent endures. The book goes into FBI investigations of Russia organized crime, Benghazi, Hillary Clinton’s emails, Russia’s interference with US elections, and other topics. McCabe was terminated 26 hours before his planned retirement.

In The Threat, McCabe claims that the work of the FBI is undermined by President Trump through his attacks on the institution and its leaders. McCabe explains what the FBI is, how it works, and why it will endure. The Threat is an interesting book, well written, and informative. I feel anyone who likes reading about politics and recent history would enjoy this book.

“The life of lies. The silent circle of assent. The boss in complete control. Loyalty oaths. An us-versus-them worldview. Lying about things, large and small, in service to some warped code of loyalty. These rules and standards were hallmarks of the Mafia, but throughout my career I’d be surprised how often I’d find them applied outside of it.” ~ James Comey in A Higher Loyalty

I’ve finished reading a book entitled A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership by former director of the FBI James Comey. I enjoyed reading The Threat by Andrew McCabe so I decided I’d read James Comey’s book. This book has nothing to do with running; however, Comey does mention basketball several times.

James Comey served as director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017. He was appointed to the post by President Barack Obama. When Obama was about to announce Comey as his nomination to become the FBI director, Obama jokingly asks Comey about using the FBI gym to play basketball. Comey replied, “Of course, Mr. President. It is your gym, in a way.” Comey says he loves basketball, but he knew he’d never join Obama in the FBI gym. Comey says, “FBI directors can’t be that way with presidents. Everybody knows why. At least I thought they did.”

In A Higher Loyalty, Comey tells his life story beginning when he was in the fifth grade, moving from New York to New Jersey, and being bullied. When he lived in New York he had been popular. When his family moved to New Jersey, he was the new kid, and he was picked on by his classmates.

Comey also talks about many adults who were positive role models to him as a child. Comey’s parents had emphasized the need for resisting the group. Comey claims “We all have a tendency to surrender our moral authority to ‘the group.’” Comey goes on to telling some of his experiences in college and law school.

Comey worked as a lawyer in private practice and as an Assistant United States Attorney. Comey’s career in the United States Attorney’s office main responsibilities were prosecuting Mafia gangs. Comey claims Mafia gang members are basically bullies. “They threaten the weak to feed some insecurity that rages inside them.” Comey goes into considerable detail explaining the Mafia worldview. Comey “chose a career in law enforcement because [he] believed it was the best way to help other people, especially those suffering at the hands of the powerful, the crime bosses, the bullies.” After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, President George W. Bush needed to appoint a new United States Attorney in Manhattan. Comey accepted the job.

President Bush had authorized the use of torture in enhanced interrogations. The Bush administration believed these techniques worked. Comey says that coercive interrogations are of no utility and the information obtained is useless and unreliable. The legal opinion interpretation of the torture statute had been very broad. Comey went to Attorney General Ashcroft and told him that the Justice Department opinion on the legality of those actions should be withdrawn, and eventually it was withdrawn.

Later after Comey had moved to Richmond and returned to private practice, he was offered the position of FBI Director by President Barack Obama. Comey was surprised because he was a Republican. Obama wanted the FBI and its director independent from the president and politics.

In the book, Comey explained that the FBI and its director are not on anyone’s political team. Comey says that on more than one occasion, he attempted to explain the appropriate relationship between the FBI and the White House to President Trump, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Comey says they either just didn’t understand or didn’t want to understand. He says that Priebus and Sessions were both inadequate for, and overwhelmed by their jobs. Comey claims Donald Trump “is unethical, and untethered to truth and institutional values. His leadership is transactional, ego driven, and about personal loyalty.”

In the book, Comey provides numerous examples of President Trump’s improper conduct. For example, President Trump invited Comey to a private dinner. Comey was anticipating a small group. When he gets there, it is just him and President Trump in the Green Room. At the dinner Trump said, “I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.” At another meeting in the Oval Office, President Trump dismissed everyone from the room except Comey, then Trump says, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Regarding the Hillary Clinton email investigation Comey explains that he was stuck between a “really bad option” and a “catastrophic option.” Comey claims, “No matter what we found, that act of concealment would be catastrophic to the integrity of the FBI and the Department of Justice.”

Comey concludes A Higher Loyalty with his June 8, 2017 opening statement testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

A Higher Loyalty is an interesting book, well written, and informative. Comey talks a lot about integrity, ethical leadership, and loyalty to the truth. From reading this book and McCabe’s book, I am convinced that McCabe, Comey, and Robert Mueller are honorable men of the highest integrity. I will accept their word over President Trump’s or any of his enablers. I feel anyone who likes reading about politics and recent history would enjoy this book.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

Life, the Universe and Everything

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

Mostly Harmless

And the bonus story Young Zaphod Plays It Safe.

I read the original novel way back when it first came out, but I had never read the sequels. The series is science fiction comedy, and is basically an adventure story about Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect’s wild journey through time and space. The whole set is well written, thought provoking, and very amusing.

Spirit Run

I finished reading a book called Spirit Run: A 6,000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land by Noé Álvarez. The book is Álvarez’s experience running in the 2004 Peace and Dignity Journeys. The Peace and Dignity Journeys are run every four years. They are intended to “spark dialogue on the issue of peace and dignity for Indigenous peoples; model their responsibility to Mother Earth, Father Sky, communities, and themselves, and receive the community’s prayers.” The Peace and Dignity Journeys begins with two groups of Indigenous runners. One group starts in Chickaloon, Alaska, USA. The other group begins in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. After six months of running the two groups meet in Panama City, Panama.

Spirit Run begins with Álvarez telling of his childhood, his joy of running, and his working at an apple-packing plant with his mother in Yakima, Washington. Later Álvarez receives a full scholarship to Whitman College. Álvarez attended college for several months, then quit to participate in the Peace and Dignity Journeys.

Álvarez actually began his run with Peace and Dignity Journeys in Canada rather than Alaska because he missed the first month of the journey. Álvarez tells of his experiences along way. Much of the journey was in hostile environments with inadequate food, water, and accommodations. At one point he encountered a mountain lion. In Mexico people threw rocks at him and the other runners. After four months he quit the run in Guatemala due to problems with his knees. Álvarez concludes the book by telling where the various participant runners are now.

In Spirit Run, Álvarez’s tells his story of running in the Peace and Dignity Journeys, as well as his personal history. He also includes much material regarding the lives of Native Americans and the problems they endure. The book is well written and very interesting.

“On Memorial Day, we kick off our Summer #RWRunStreak in force! Every day until July 4, you and me, me and you, we run at least one mile. That’s 41 days of running and just one daily mile is all it takes. Can you run more than one? Of course. Is one mile far enough to matter? Heck yeah!” ~ Coach Jess THE RUNNER'S WORLD EDITORS. MAY 18, 2020

#RWRunStreak complete! When I first saw this challenge in Runner's World magazine, I thought there’s no way I could run 41 consecutive days. Now I’ve actually run 43 consecutive days rather than the 41 days of the challenge. I ran the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day too.

”Many runners claim the hours around sunrise as their own time. Getting out early mornings can clear the cobwebs from your head and provide focus for your day. There's something very powerful about rising every morning and getting out on the road before others. We are runners!” ~ Hal Higdon

”Sentient beings including insects are all the same in wanting happiness and seeking to avoid suffering. There’s no dispute about this. We tend to rely on physical and sensory sources of pleasure, but without peace of mind, we won't be consistently happy. Material development has greatly improved our physical facilities, but peace of mind isn’t manufactured by machines in some factory, we have to create it within.” ~ Dalai Lama
