Re: from ray to zee

tournament day. 140 buy in. i did get to the last two tables from three. got lucky and played fast with the worst hand and won. had a bunch of chips then. but moved tables and played two hands way too fast to get chips or go home. it was a nice day outside for montana and i figured i win either way.

i did and won with the trip home early.

Re: from ray to zee

things are good. my two bald eagles that have a nest about 400 yards from my window are back again this year and hopefully they get to raise a few chicks again.
spring has been warmer than usual, whats new, and many of the breeding pairs around the property are already getting it together . that is fun to see.

also i have a ton of deer in the yard like never before. groups of ten to twenty are milling around eating grass.

Re: from ray to zee

Is there a poker etiquette that states that one does not call another player if another player is all in? For instance, I'm holding Q7, flop comes QQ3, player 1 goes all in, 2nd player calls, then I raise 2nd player, putting them all in. First player has a Q also, so we split the pot. 2nd player is out and says that I should not have done that. What is your take on this?

Re: from ray to zee

you make the play that gives you the best chance of winning the pot when you are not already in the money.

however when playing in the money in a tournament it sometimes is best to check it down to give both of you the best chance of knocking a player out and moving up in the payoffs.

most players dont understand and think you always should check it down if one player is all in. you should when it is in your best interest.

Re: from ray to zee

poker is a game where you must beat your opponents, even if friends at the table to win. other wise you lose. so if you want to win you have to not give up your edge against them. that is all you have to win with. so those are your tools at the game and you have to use them.
you still have to be accepted at the table just like in life to have a comfortable day. so play within the rules and be enjoyable to play with, and most times you can win if you play better than your opponents.

Re: from ray to zee

went out shed hunting today. that is looking for deer antlers that they drop in early springtime. the deer (bucks) then start growing them back.
found three in about an hour walking around the place. one had 4 points and the other two each had 3.
didnt find the ones from the big deer that are on my property. most years i get a few of 5 point ones, or rarely a 6 or 7.
after a few more times i most likely will fill out my bag.

1. What is the edge you speak of?
2. Accepted at the table? If one pays the buy in, what does acceptance at the table has to do with it? Everyone there wants your chips, after all it is a competition.
3. Enjoyable to play with?
I don't get this one at all, 9 different personalities at once, all eyes on the prize.
I try to not let emotions get in the way of making the best play.
I've realized poker is so enjoyable and fun, and an ongoing education of wit, skill, and bluff. The bluffing part is not very enjoyable but fascinating at the same time and gives me a rush when I've pulled one out and won.

You are absolutely right, you have to be accepted at the table, I've realized this just lately as a matter of fact. Good advise . It's awesome to communicate with a professional player.

Re: from ray to zee

with the improving economy western montana is getting some big action in the building trade. 2 new hotels are going up in whitefish with also many residential houses where building stalled during the recession. plus prices have followed it.
this is good but also changes the face of smallish towns. after all whitefish was just 3000 people a few years back.
no longer can i walk down the street and know most people. most days i rarely even see someone i know. that is change.

The Whitefish area has always been ritzy to the rest of us Montanans. I'm up there a few times a year, Ray, I would imagine your ranch is worth a fortune these days. I stay at the Pine Lodge when I'm there.

Re: from ray to zee

yes the town is going crazy again after the economy improved. two new hotels and lots of houses and businesses. even the town hall is getting a 17 million dollar rebuild.

it is kind of mind boggling as when i first came there the town was in a depression and people said there was no hope for it as the railroad was slowing and logging was getting shut down. that when i knew it would be good to buy there. it had all the things high end people want. great golf, beautiful lakes and rivers right in town, a national park a half hour away. what more could you want.

Re: from ray to zee

up to 18 inches fell in different parts of the state. but it is going to be melted quickly as 70 plus is forecast for the weekend.

poker is slow right now in the flathead valley for some reason. too much omaha i think has burnt out the players in my game.

summer brings in new blood so we shall see.

Re: from ray to zee

my last tournament i think i played fairly well and got no where except close to the end. that doesnt pay. never got enough chips to do anything so ended up pushing a small stack in the high blinds in desperation.
the worst position to be in is to be a ways out of the money with short chips and the blinds going up.

Re: from ray to zee

next tournament did get into the money just past the bubble. never had a hand at all but weaseled in with just the right moves. sometimes you get close not because of your great play but because others gave you enough breaks .

Re: from ray to zee

i hate trading in things to a dealer as you know what they do to you. so i am selling one of my boats after getting a new one.
boats are harder to sell as people dont seem to know what they want. so its harder to qualify them as a buyer on the phone. and in order to see something i am selling, you have to convince me you are a real buyer before i show it or go further with you.
this has worked well in the past for me.

Re: from ray to zee

one of the secrets of being a winner at poker is to detach yourself from the good and bad feelings of winning and losing. this way you dont let past results affect your current playing of hands.
of course that isnt easy or completely possible but can be partly done.

Re: from ray to zee

playing in a poker tournament is like climbing a rock wall. you do it a little bit at a time and faster when you find an easy route to go, taking advantage of any spots where you are given chips with small risk to win them.

i have lots of birds nesting as usual for this time of the year. most fun as i get to watch and interact with some. two eagles in the tree across the river had chicks but hard to see after the leaves come on the trees. my ponds are full of geese, ducks, and whatever finding spots for the babies. now until early june chicks hatch. then the deer start dropping their fawns.

Re: from ray to zee

we are having really warm weather and dry in the northwest. this is going to make for another bad fire year. rivers are very low already and need lots of rain.
nice if you are a golfer, but not so good otherwise.

for those that buy stocks think about the ramifications and look at future prices.

Re: from ray to zee

i do longer term guessing in the markets. i find something i believe is undervalued and or beaten down by traders. and i look for things that i think will change and bet in that direction.

if buying commodities you need imo to go far out and not react to sudden moves and day to day changes. bet on a trend you see that will be discounted because it cant be verified.

i like buying stocks in the industries or companies that benefit from a change. that way i get the profit from that and the rise from inflation. but dont get the giant profits from leverage. but also rarely suffer any losses or minor ones.

Re: from ray to zee

Just two things:

1) Making good money off a nit isn't usually possible, imo. No one makes much off of me, unless they give me an incredible bad beat, which doesn't happen often enough for them to think of me as someone to make a profit from. I typically play less than 10% of hands, so super nit.

2) I love you, Ray.

That is all.
