Re: Poker, life and business

Played a late session last night, my boy who bets 5x pot sat me at 2/5 nl 2500 max buy in so I couldn't refuse. I made one mistake which cost me $700 but overall I adapted to the way he plays very well. I ran pretty bad in a lot of spots where I whiffed pots with premiums, missed big draws and got out kicked on pair. I ended up even or so on the session, but there are good things to come.
Also I found about a new 5/10 game that runs 3x a week, I'm going to try it out today for the first time and see how it goes.

A few hands from last night :

Hand 1 :

Effective stack : $800

Hero has 9s 9d and posts BB.

Villain raises to $17, hero makes it $66 villain calls.

Flop ($134) : 2h 3h 2d

Hero bets $64 Villain raises to $200 Hero goes all in Villain calls.

Turn : 2s

River : 9c

Villain shows AhQh and mucks.

Hand 2 : Effective stacks $1600

Hero has JsQd in bb.

Villain makes it 17$ hero calls (should've 3-bet )

Flop ($36) : 3d Js 3h

Hero checks. Villain bets $31 hero calls.

Turn ($98) : 7d

Hero checks, villain bets $180 hero calls.

River ($ 458) : 8h

Hero checks, Villain bets $700 hero calls. Villain shows 3h9d and wins.

Terribly played hand all around, starting from pre flop and on to the river call. Turn call I think is ok, he does with air and draws, but the river was the dead give away.

The third hand is from Omaha. I was playing a 1/2 game effective stacks were $500.

Hero in BB : 9h 9d Ts Jh

Villain is a guy who clearly has minimal playing experience is at the table with 500$ as well. I already stacked him once. He gets it in with a pair and straight draw on a paired board, calls with a set on an all suited board, ect. Basically plays like its holdem.

UTG makes it 7$, MP calls, Villain calls, I call.

Flop ($29) : Ac 9c 2d

Checks to villain who bets $14, I pot it to $60 folds to villain who calls.

Turn ( $149) : 7d

I pot villain calls.

River ($447) : Ah

I bet pot villain calls for less and shows Ad 9h 3s 4d.

I think I should have check called or check folded there.
Villain is bad enough to call with just an ace or KK or QQ there though, so I might've lost value there. Still not sure what the right play was, because villain was very very bad. Against a normal player it can be a check call/fold depending on how he plays, but this was an interesting case. I still don't have omaha down 100% but I'm adapting pretty well to it I think.

Re: Poker, life and business

Played some drunk poker yesterday. The 5/10 game was only omaha so I stayed away from it. I played some 2/5 omaha and Hu 2/5 holdem. I ended up down about 700-800$. Ran very bad, lost a lot of hands that were setups and lost a lot of hands where I was 70/30 preflop but the board ran out in my opponents favor. I ended up quitting after getting tired.

Going on a dinner cruise today, my girl's friend got us a groupon deal for it. Looks interesting, but it's in Jersey so driving there is going to suck.

Got into another new club that runs holdem 3x a week too. I'm going to download and install pokertracker and start 6 tabling + holdem/omaha. It'll be just like the good old days. I've been meaning to get PT but I never got around to it, and I've been beating the same game because I learned the players betting patterns and tendencies.

I'm going to Virginia Tomorrow, so I'll be bringing a laptop with me. I'll still play poker at night but no more than 4 tables a time.

Hopefully these new games will be good, so I can get on track to making money for that house bankroll. Pokertracker should be a big help. After I get home I plan on 6-8 tabling on my PC with pokertracker, and I should be killing it.

Re: Poker, life and business

The dinner cruise was very weird, it was set up like a wedding. There were numbered tables where 6-8 people sat with each other randomly. It was me and my girl, and three other couples. There were people in suits, and there were people in basketball shorts. There was even this Spanish dude with a valuer shirt, cross tattoo on his chest, golden sunglasses and a gold grill. The food was ok, it lasted for about 3 hours. I felt it could've been 2 hours and that would have been fine.

After I got home, I played a session for about an hour. Played the same guy HU from yesterday, and obliterated him. Ended up about 500$ after I started off down 800$ and then he quit me.

Also played some 2/5 Omaha but broke even in that. The third new club I joined was running 5/10 omaha last night so I didn't play that either. Going to patiently wait until they all have holdem.

Heading to Virginia today for the vacation, looking forward to it a lot. I should still be playing almost every night, so will keep my records up on here.

Re: Poker, life and business

Played a session yesterday lost like 2k. I played at my girls friend house and kept getting disconnected. Lost at least $600 value on a river bet because of it.

Here are the hands:

Hand 1
4 handed 2.5k effective 2/5 game

Hero is BB with TT

Fold to button. Button raised to 15$. SB who's agressive idiot makes it 65$ I make it 200$ button folds SB calls.

Flop ($415) Ts 6c 3h
Villain checks and I decide to check too

Turn ($945) : Js
Villain checks, I bet 260$ villain calls.

River : 2d

Villain checks. I get disconnected. Sick joke. Would've bombed the river for at least $600. I get reconnected villain shows AJ. FML.

Hand 2
2500$ effective

Hero on button with 6s 3s

Utg raised to 15$ villain makes it 45$ I make $120 both call.

Flop ($360). Kh Th 4d

Check, check. I bet $140.
Fold, and cutoff calls who lives calling at least 1 bet light.

Turn ($540) : 7s

Villain checks. I bet $260 villain calls.

River ($1060) : 4s

Villain checks. I bomb it for $640 villain calls with JT.

Hand 3 :
1k effective

Hero has 8s 4s on cutoff. Fold to me I raise to 15$. BB makes it 40$ I call.

Flop ($82) Js 8c 5h

Villain checks. I put him on AK or AQ immediately. I bet $44 he calls.

Turn ($168). 3c

Villain checks, I bet 104$ he calls.

River ($378). 4c

Villain checks. I bet $280. Villain ships all in. I should've folded, but I called because I was frustrated. If villain had A high and thought I was bluffing he would've just called. No one check raises all in like that with nothing on the river.
Villain shows Ac Kc and I quit the game after that burned $600 on that river call.

I told my girl I kept getting disconnected and she says " why would you play here, my friend has tin foil on her tv antenna". Point taken, will take a break until we get to her aunts house.

Re: Poker, life and business

Lost another 2-3k last night. Really gross session again. So many hands didn't go my way and villains pulled cards out of their ass to win multiple huge pots.

Gotta stay focused and make this money back. Want to make around 15k for the house and around 3-4K for my borgata trip on September 6th.

It's pretty bad timing for this bad run, but then again when is it a good time to run cold?

Thanks buddy.

Played a short session today. Made 3k to make the week a bit easier. Just what the doctor ordered. Nothing interesting happened. Had two hands hold up when I was ahead and that's it. Poker is an easy game when you get hands and don't get outdrawn.

Hand 1. 3 handed 5/10 Holdem
Effective stack sizes 1k

Hero : Js Jc

Button raised to 30
SB who loves 3 betting makes it 100
We have a long history and he'll ship light on me.
I make it $310
Button folds and Sb ships. I call.

Runout : 3d 8s 9h 3s 4d

Villain shows TT

Hand 2 : Omaha 5/10. Villain 1 has 1k villain 2 has 700

Hero : 5s 6d 7s 9h

Utg makes it 15$. Three callers. I call cutoff. Bb completes.

Flop ($90). 3s 4s 7h

Check to me I bet pot. Two callers.

Turn ($360) 2h. Perfect.

Villain 1 checks. I pot. Villain 2 goes all in for 200$ more. Villain 1 calls I call.

River ($ 1840) : 4d

Villain 1 checks. I go all in for like 200$. Villain 1 calls and I scoop.

Will probably play another session tonight. Gotta get back in the plus, woulda made 10k already if I didn't have 3 big losing sessions. Love variance.

Re: Poker, life and business

Had a crazy session yesterday. Four tabled a new 5/10 game I was in. It was all Omaha though. Ended up
-$1300 but was in for like 7k at one point.

The players are pretty bad for the stakes. Might take a few more shots at it and if I run good at the right time I can make a lot of money. Going to limit my shot taking to a few thousand, and play passive / only bet the nuts and hopefully it works.

Re: Poker, life and business

Played a nice session tonight to get back out of the red. Played HU 2/5 Holdem 2500 max buy in. Had a lot of interesting hands and built up a nice dynamic with villain where I 3bet/5 bet him light.

Hand 1 : 2500$ effective stacks, hero is button.

Hero gets Ks Qs

Hero raises to $15. Villain makes it $65. Hero makes it $160 villain calls.

Flop ($320) 7h 4d 2s

Villain checks. Hero bets $140 villain calls.

Turn ($600) 4h

Villain donks out $320. I think he's light so raise to $740. He calls.

River ($2080). 9d

Villain checks. I bet $788. He calls with 78.

I bet thinking he might fold a 7 or A high FD or mid pair. I guess not. Based on this hand I changed strategy and the dynamic was set for later hands.

Hand 2 : 2500$ effective stacks, hero is button.

Hero has 8c 8s

Raise to $15. Villain pops it to $65. I make it $165 villain calls.

Flop ($330) Kc Tc 6s

Villain checks, I check.

Turn ($330) 4c

Villain bets $170. I call.

River ( $670) 8h

Villain bets $320. I raise to $1200. Villain hates folding to my raises in spots like this due to the dynamic I set up so he calls and mucks.

Hand 3 : 2500$ effective stacks, hero is button. Villain just reloaded.

Hero in bb with Js Jc

Villain raises to $15. Hero makes $54. Villain makes it $170. Hero makes it $450. ( a few times I did this with air and showed, he had a very tight range against my 5 bets until I started showing). He ships $2500. I call.

He has As 6s

Flop Kd 6h 4s

Turn Jd

River 2h

I hold and scoop a 5k pot.

I then dumped back about 2k in tough spots, and quit.

Ended up +$3300 for the day. Shoulda locked it up when I was +5k and woulda had the money for my borgata trip.

I think I experience winners tilt sometimes and dump some money back before I actually quit. This is a leak I def have to work on.
Once I'm up 5k what more do I want to make for the day? 10k? Gotta lock up a monster session like that I think.

Re: Poker, life and business

Had a great day today. Me and my girl went to this state park in Virginia to go kayaking. We rented two kayaks and explored a big lake. It was so peaceful and beautiful. It reminded me of the summers I used to spend upstate with my grandparents.
We saw turtles sun bathing and a blue heron. Along our exploration we found a place where we can beach the kayaks and go swimming. The water was the perfect temperature. We swam around a bit and then we continued exploring. After we got tired we came back to our swimming area to take one more dip before heading back to return the kayaks.
Days like today are what life is about. Spending time with people you love and doing things you both enjoy. I really love nature and spending time in it. I love the forest, lakes, mountains, ect. I might head back to the park and go fishing there tomorrow morning before I start my day.

Just a few pics from today.

So far this has been a great vacation. I had to call the office a few times and speak to a few clients, but for the most part my business has been able to run itself while I was away.

Re: Poker, life and business

Played a session tonight made about 800$. Also played a $100 tourney. Was CL at the FT with $840 for first, $510 for second and $300 for third.

Got to 4 handed as CL and ran into QQ with AT Sb vs BB when BB had 30bb stack. Obv no A comes out. Had about 60bb before the hand started.

Then a few hands later picked up KK vs QQ against the same BB and Q flops and I bubble. Woulda been back up to CL with that hand and BB woulda been crippled.

Not so much about the money as it is spending 3.5 hours playing for something that dumb to happen back to back. I played almost perfectly though so I'm not mad about that, just about the results.

Re: Poker, life and business

I'm done with poker until Monday. Going to use the 1k or so I made for two buy ins to the 2 mill guaranteed at borgata. Heading out there wed after next.

Watched some old WSOP on YouTube and it got me feeling very nostalgic. It brought me back to the days where me and my friends played $1-$5 home tournaments. We used to watch the WSOP coverage all day and try to practice picking up live tells.

The coverage was great back then and so were the stories. People really gambled it up and they were pretty bad as well.

Playing mid- high stakes poker was a dream for me when I was in high school. Now I'm doing that along with other ventures. Sometimes in life you really have to take a step back and appreciate everything you have. Sure you can always have more, but if you're not happy or grateful for what you have now, then you probably won't be when you get more either.

I still want to win at least one WSOP bracelet, it means a lot to me. I skipped the series last year because I just got an office for my business and had to invest a lot of time and money into it. I skipped the series this year because I planned to buy this house that I'm currently in negotiations for. Instead of taking 20k+ to Vegas, I chose to hold it and invest in my long term future. I guess that's what being an adult is about?

Next year i want to play a few bracelet events for sure, and hopefully the main. Winning a bracelet is one thing that's on my bucket list, and I plan to complete everything on that list.

I once read that you should make a list of three things : 1. Things you want to learn 2. Things you want to have and 3. Places you want to go.

Then make a plan to accomplish everything and maybe add more things to that list as you go along. I'll add a more detailed list in a later post, but a lot of things on the list are already crossed off. I still have a lot more left to do though, probably like 80% or so

Re: Poker, life and business

Poker update : Played Sunday night made about $400, only holdem. Played last night and lost about $800. Had a very frustrating session, got outdrawn in a lot of big hands and missed a lot of big draws. I was 4 tabling 1/2 omaha so that's bound to happen I guess. I'm too lazy to post hand histories for those sessions, nothing too interesting happened anyways.

I'm going to AC next week to play the 2 mill guaranteed. Hopefully I can start my good tournament run there. Will try to post pictures of my trip as well and make it a semi live trip report.

Business update : Made less than I projected to make again this month. I will start seeing revenue from two more clients next month, so I should be where I want to be at either next month or the month after. Will also start seeing additional revenue from my arbitration files, that should also be a help. I don't expect to see that until 3 or so months from now, though. By the end of the year I expect to be where I want to be at, and then next year I should finally start making a good profit.

House update : After submitted my appeal of value to the bank, the realtor said it can take up to another 2-3 months for the bank to get back to us. So we wait.

Personal update : Had a great trip to Virginia. I only worked out twice while I was there, and the week before I've been slacking. This week I'm going to hit the gym and get back on my exercise regiment. I've been getting progressively stronger, and I don't want to mess that up. I can almost do 3 full sets of 10 dips, which is a big improvement from 2-3 dips. I can also do 4 sets of 3 pull ups, which is a big improvement from 0-1 pull up.
I have my basketball Finals game in one of my leagues tonight, hopefully we'll take it down. In my other league we apparently lost in the playoffs, although no one was aware of the fact. I asked the captain when playoffs were multiple times, then he contacted the league manager, and said the manager told him in a few weeks. Yesterday he called the manager to find out what time our game is, the manager told him playoffs started and its at 8:30. We show up, and apparently playoffs started last week and we lost. Half our team wasn't there because we thought it was a regular exhibition game. The league is very poorly run, and I will probably not be participating in it any more.

Re: Poker, life and business

Personal update: I got lunch with my best friend at his house. His parent's house is about 2 min from my business, so I ducked out and went over there. Had a few beers, some pasta, rice and steak. Felt nice to just sit outside and relax for a while. I'm going to the gym tomorrow for my first time, should be good. I'm looking forward to hitting the weights, doing pull ups and dips, and running. I feel like I got pretty out of shape from being inactive the last two weeks or so.
Last night was the championship in my other league. I am by far the worst player on the team. Everyone else is super athletic and can dunk. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty good at ball, but athleticism wise I can't compete with my teammates. I see the court better than they do, and I pass better as a result. When it comes down to pure athleticism I am completely outclassed though.

Business update: I actually met my projections for the month, so that's great news. I am handing in a few more accounts for the lawyer, so that is more additional revenue for me as well. I will begin seeing income on two out the three new accounts either next month or the month after. Same goes for the addition income from setting up arbitration files.
I also am chasing down a doctor who I took out to a fancy dinner a few months ago. He's kind of unorganized, but has a huge practice and his biller sucks. I'm trying to get him to come over to my company. That would be a nice boost in income for me as well.
On a bad note, the file created for me by the programmer was corrupted. My software said that it found a trojan. I talked to him about it, he said he scanned it and he didn't find anything. We then did research together and saw that the anti virus I use sometimes has a glitch where a certain trojan pops up because there is similar code in the program that is being downloaded. I figured even if there is a 1% chance that there actually is a virus, it isn't worth the risk. I scratched the project with him, and now I am going to have to start from the beginning and hire a new person. Super frustrating, but better safe than sorry.

Poker update : Haven't played since my crappy omaha session. Am going to look to play tonight and make some money back. The hold'em games at my club have dried up which sucks, it's mostly omaha now. The players are still bad, but the variance has drastically increased because of it.

Are you playing online poker?

What % does your company charge for billing? Has the move to higher deductibles made it tougher since you now have to collect more from the patients?

Do you focus on specific specialists?

Good blog.

Good blog.
1. Playing online in private home games and I go to AC and Parx when time permits.

2. The deductible doesn't affect me too much because the procedures I charge for far outweigh the deductible. Most people just have a copay and not a deductible anyway.
It all depends on the patients plan, but it's not that big of a hit.

Don't want to discuss exact %.

3. I can bill for any specialty, and even for medical equipment. I also credential doctors With insurance companies and my company does office management. You wont believe how terribly so many medical offices are run.
Proper billing requires base knowledge, research and being on point. If I get a specialty I never billed before I can easily figure out how to bill for them by talking to the provider and researching the billing rules. Then I send the bills out, if they get denied I find out why, fix them and resubmit. It'll be a week or so delay in payment if they get denied, but then smooth sailing after that.

Good stuff. I didn't know online was available, private or not.

Percentage is confidential, I understand.

You must work in a great area if there is very little deductibles. Or it is a Medicare population.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/big-driv...ces-1470762389

You start doing new tests and you will get paid. And then you become an outlier and the OIG comes in and asks for 100 random claims. They will find 8 they overpaid the provider. They will then say they have overpaid on 8% of all invoices over a 2-year look back period. It is not a negotiation. It is a notification.

Agree that vast majority of medical officers are run poorly. But you have a wicked system with for-profit insurance companies between the provider and the customer. The less money they give the providers, the more for them. And the medical offices are getting paid from the insurance company directly often and not the customer. Good luck understanding and/or explaining an EOB to the vast majority of people.

Also, the lack of inter-operability between EMR systems has slowed the delivery of health-care instead of expediting it.

I liked reading about interviewing and training employees. Agree.

Keep it up!

Agree.

Keep it up!
Agree. I have a lot of personal injury providers as well, the billing is a bit different for them. The trick is finding the doctors that get reimbursed the most but still bill insurances. For example : cardiology, radiology, surgery, ect.

It will always be a battle between insurance companies and providers. The competition between insurance companies and all the different EMRs definitely slowed down the rate of evolution and automation in the medical industry.
That's a big reason of why my job won't be taken by computers or become absolute in the next 40 years or so. I'll be long retired by then hopefully.

You seem to have good knowledge about the field. I assume you are working in a healthcare field or something related?

Re: Poker, life and business

Had a nightmare session last night. Lost about 3-4k and got outdrawn for 5k+ worth of pots again. I feel like I've been on a roller coaster for the last month, but I think I'm going to get off of it now. I went from up 3k to down 5k to up 1k to down 4k to up 1k to down 4k again. My clubs have stopped running holdem and it's all 2/5 and 5/10 omaha. The swings are huge, and I don't really enjoy them. If I want to gamble with variance like that, I can just go play Blackjack.

I would love to play 12pm-6pm during down time at the business. It's a real shame that online poker doesn't exist anymore. I got put on a few overseas sites, but they closed. I don't trust Americas cardroom, because at any point they can just shut down and not reimburse anyone. I learned my lesson from black Friday. If I were to play their million guaranteed and win, then I couldn't get the money, that would devastate me.

The worst part about sessions like that is that I go to sleep late, and I can't fall asleep right away. This kills the entire next day for me, and increases the chances of me getting a dizzy spell. I think it'll be better for my personal life if I stop playing at night altogether. Or playing a smaller game where I can quit whether or not I'm up or down. If I'm stuck 2-3k I keep playing to try to break even, especially if the game is good.

I'll probably play once or twice a week a small 1/2 game that I'm a member of and a 100$ tournament online that runs by the same club.

In my opinion, I'm better off relaxing and reading before bed anyways, instead of degenning it up until 2-3 am then waking up at 8 am and going to run a business. I think I'll just concentrate on living a better balanced life (physical activities + eating at home), and doing light research at night.

When I have big losing sessions, I always tell myself I'm going to quit online (like a big baby) , but then I play anyways. If the club starts running Hold'em games again I'll play, but I'm 100% going to quit online omaha.

Maybe one day when I'm swimming in cash, I'll gamble it up in 5/10 omaha.

Re: Poker, life and business

So despite me crying like a baby in the last post, I 3 tabled omaha 2/5 again. I ended up around $800 and quit after losing a $1700 pot on the river. Would've been a nice bail out session if my hand held.

Hero : Qh Td Ts 8d
3 handed 900$ effective stacks

Hero is BB. Button pots to 17$, SB calls$, I call, button calls.

Flop ($51) Qd Tc 4s

Check, Check, Button bets 40$, SB folds, I raise to 140$, button makes it $340, and I ship. Button calls.

Turn : 6s

River: 9s

Button flips Ad Kh Jc 4s and wins it on the river.

I'm going to try to break even again, because I don't really feel like quitting and paying my guy a few thousand if I don't have to. It sucks that the holdem games died, I really have to run like God in the omaha games to make my goal for the house. It can be done, but I'm not usually the guy to get heaters. Hopefully I can pick up a heater for a month or so, and I can easily make 2k a night from the clowns that play in the game.

Re: Poker, life and business

Played 5/10 HU in Holdem last night and lost around 3-4K. Guy I played got shocked with the deck hard. The only reason I sat him was because he's an awful player.

First hand if the session I went down 1k right away from getting it in with 99 vs TT on an 8 high board. That set the pace for the rest of the session. I 3bet about 70% of my hands and he hit 80% of the flops when he called my raises. Sickest heater I ever saw.

I'm going to stop playing in the bigger game altogether. No more 2/5 or 5/10 for me until I build more money up. I have the money, but as mentioned before I'm buying a house in like 2-3 months so I need to save it for that.

Will probably play 1/2 and tournaments up to 500$ or so until I'm comfortable enough financially to play in bigger games.
