I busted out of the Aria 1PM today. As ironic as it may sound, I'm feeling pretty good about it. Over the past two days I've felt like my "feel" for the game has really come along. It's very hard to describe, but I just feel dialed in to the flow of the game.
It's easier for me to track the pot, I can track people's bets, what they are doing, what they
should be doing, and starting to put it together on what it means. I can narrow down when people are on draws, when they are isolating, when they are just playing position, when they hit something good. I'm really starting to basically understand the . . .
communication (for the lack of a better word) that happens at a table with the plays, bets (sizes), calls, checks, etc, etc. It's a pretty exciting place to be, I can just feel myself getting better. The bust outs are variance but I'm convinced that I'm getting better at this poker thing.
Of course, all of that doesn't mean that I'm playing flawlessly. I'm still someone that has only been playing NL since April 2014. So I think that I need to spend some time on some fundamentals that I do not have because I was not a big player prior to BF and all that stuff.
One of the items I need to work on is identifying the textures of boards. I need to be better at identifying potential straights, flushes, etc on a flop. I need to get better & faster at this.
If only I had a computer program that could help me with that . . . oh wait, I'm a computer genius IRL . . . I can write one! And that's what I've done over the last few minutes. I spent some time writing myself a little "Flop Trainer" that I can use every morning and look at different flops and use it to quickly identify different flops. No one really pays me to write Mac apps, they all want Windows, so it's cool when I get the chance to write something for OSX
It's very simple right now, of course (this is less than hour of work for me). Eventually I'll add hole cards and play out the board, little features like that. I just need to look at a ton of boards and be able to quickly identify textures.
One of my bucket list items is to release an iPhone app. This might make a cool little app for mobiles. Something you can use while waiting for a tourney to start. Or maybe this is better as an Anki deck. Who knows? Either way, I pledge to use this little app during my free time so that I can get better at board textures.
So, I've lost twice at Aria this week but my confidence remains high!
