Have you thought about keeping 2 chickens for eggs? I mean if you still live not in an apartment.

Re: My Life as an Island Hermit

honest feedback:

-hold the camera up at human face level. when you were walking around i was just seeing empty sky in the background when i COULD be seeing small glimpses of an island paradise, which could be nice. or at least we could get an idea of the environment you're in. just pretend like you're taking a walk with 2+2, and you're holding our eyes in your hands because you're a future wizard

-i liked seeing the trap pull cause it's not something i'd ever do. more of that and more island living chores that might seem dull to you but us city folks never get to see. if it feels too dull just tell a story during the chore like on law & order when they interview people.

and i like animals too. and **** insects.

but then i think, is it just because the insect is that much different than us, that we're so repulsed by it and so morally ok with killing them by the millions with chemicals and under our boots and with paper towels? or is it because we're so many levels of intelligence higher than insects that we see it as ok to get rid of them if they bother us even slightly.

and then i think about how artificial intelligence is getting smarter and smarter with no peak in sight, and all evidence points to a superintelligent AI coming into existence within our lifetimes. an AI that is so much more intelligent than humans, that the comparison between it and us dwarfs the comparison between us and insects. and what if the machines realize that humans are wasteful destructive cruel violent short-lived creatures that can be so easily eliminated by an intelligence that much greater than humanity's? it is too easy for me to genocide the grubs in my yard, and my neurons don't even fire at light speed

The lobsters will kill each other as well. If one cracks a body or a tail and starts to bleed, the other lobsters will eat the **** out of it and kill it.

AI is a really scary thing imo, and I personally think it could be a big threat to the human race. Their ability to learn and store the memory is far more superior than any human. It's a pretty scary thing if you do some research on it and see what they're actually capable of, although it looks like you already have SA. A decent comparison would be humans and coyotes. Pests that are just destructive and the world would be a better place without them. I'm sure an AI robot would think the same about humans.

I 2nd that on seeing what more of your duties are and see what your everyday life is like. I didn't think the bird would fish all that well, but maybe if you can catch something that had just died with a little meat on it? Or the bird may have been a little better if it was cut up. Idk but looking forward to the next update!

Re: My Life as an Island Hermit

@Binksy Will do bud.

@Lapka I have thought about it but I don't think I am going to stay here this winter so they would be one more thing to worry about if I leave. I am still considering it, but I am not sure yet.

@ScreaminAsian Thanks for the feedback, very helpful. I will try to focus more on showing the mundane daily stuff. As far as the insects and animals thing, I draw the distinction that insects don't feel emotions like most animals do. I don't believe that if you put a hornet in a jar it would "feel" the same way a pig in a gestation crate does. Cows cry when their young are taken away from them but I doubt that bees feel sadness in the same way if their queen is taken from the nest. I could certainly be off here but I just try to use the moral compass inside of me rather than trying to fully rationalize it and make it a completely cerebral matter. My ex argued with me a bunch about this saying that plants feel, rocks feel, everything feels. To me it is just common sense, but I see how it can seem arbitrary to others. It's not the lack of intelligence that and insect has, it's more about the kind of consciousness that I believe they have. Like I said too it's not that something has to die for food that really bothers me, it's the fact that they aren't treated with respect or compassion that all living things deserve (from a tree to an elephant).

As far as the AI thing, you really have a good point. Sam Harris talks about this. If we create AI that is exponentially smarter than us, and a far superior race that has emotions and empathy far beyond ours, then maybe they should take over. It is foolish to think that we are the end all be all of life. I am not educated enough on this to really get into it, but it is definitely something that piques my interest and I would like to learn more about.

Thanks for following everyone!

Thanks glad you enjoy it. I am not sure where I plan to stay this winter. I might look for a place around here, but I am just so sick of Maine winter. I was browsing craigslist a few days ago looking at Vegas. Imawhale has a grindhouse out there but I highly doubt they would let me bring my dog. Rent there is more than I would like to pay too. I was blown away by how many cheap apartments there are out there and also there are a ton of posts looking for roommates. It all depends on how much money I make in the next few months, but I would really like to get on the WSOP site in Nevada. Honestly though I really haven't put too much thought into where I plan on staying. I just know I need to be able to have my pup wherever I am.

Re: My Life as an Island Hermit

Going to start by saying great blog, kept me busy at work for an hour or so. Have a question for you, do you know of any places that ship fresh lobster/shellfish around the US? And if so, what is a reasonable price? I understand it is cheaper living in Maine, but my friend is looking to open a food truck and I mentioned how badass it would be to have a seafood truck that serves fresh lobster rolls, crab rolls, bisques, etc. Appreciate any response and I know it is kind of a weird question, but I figure if someone may know it would be a lobster guy from Maine.

I think garbo lobster does. You may not be able to get it shipped to your house but if you go to one of their pounds you may be able to dry up a business arrangement. Idk where or how many locations they have but I know they have one in Texas.

videos are great, thank you for sharing.

Keep the review going, it's an integral part of improving your game.

Is it required that you let the female lobster go, or is that more altruistic on your part?

Not sure how to make the video link owrk for this, but if you like that broke for free joint check out this album:

So, this is a pretty noob question, but what is the overall purpose of the cement? Is it so that if there is flooding it doesn't affect your camp or is it so that your camp sits more level in general?

I've been sticking to it. I do review with one of the other members of the stable twice a week now on a schedule and a little bit more on my own. The female lobster had a v-notch in a specific flipper on it's tail which means that it was caught by someone when it was bearing eggs. The v-notch on a female makes it illegal to keep to protect the breeding stock.
That link is awesome btw. I have been listening to them all week, I really dig.

I had my camp on blocks and they have been sinking over the past few years and my camp was no longer level. Hopefully with these footings it will pretty much stay in place.

I have not. Playing poker full time and living life on my own terms has helped some, but I don't really spend much time around people anyway so it's hard to tell. I think this is just something ingrained in me that I will never be able to change though.

Hell yeah I love RJD2.

Jus got back to the island after letting the cement cure for a while and dropped my camp off the blocks it was on. She's looking good and level! Now I have a horrible mess to clean up because we didn't get finished with the project until 10:30 Pm and we just left a big mess.

I will be posting more soon.

Re: My Life as an Island Hermit

So here I sit at my computer. I am out on the island packing my things up. I don't have much to pack, probably only 3 bags or so because over the years I have managed to live light without too many possessions. I fit all of my clothes into on duffel bag, one duffel for random stuff, and one last duffel for food and my computer/monitors. I will be disassembling my desk too, that needs to come with me. I need to get everything moved within the next 24 hours because after that I won't have a car.

Let me move back a little. August has been a terrible month for me with poker. Break even for the first half of the month then crash and burn near the end of the month. My poker client has been messed up for a few days and I can't log on to grind which has been really stressing me out because the games are usually really good near the end of the month.

The stable gave me a stake for $1/$3 live and the closest card room is just under 2 hours away in Bangor, Maine, USA. It's the only card room in the state. The first week grinding up there I was sleeping in my car and grinding online at night, then getting hours in at the casino during the day. So far I have 45 hours in live and I am -$570. I have been playing very well at the live games but I have been running pretty bad in some big pots as well as a few small mistakes. I think I would probably be break even right now if it wasn't for those mistakes, but I am getting really dialed in to how this live game plays. I notice that I pay off thin value bets though when fish bet $15 into a $50 pot OTR. I am pretty confident that I will crush those games though if I just give myself some more time in the game.

So I found a room for rent in Bangor. It's about a 15 minute walk from the casino and the rent is $325 a month. The room isn't private though. My room is between the kitchen and the living room and there are no doors, but hey, I gotta do what I gotta do. There are 2 women who live in the apartment and they seem pretty chill and clean so I think I can deal with it. I mean, the price is right.

My life roll is down. It's really down. It's almost non-existent. I asked the stable about the possibility of borrowing money and they were open to it but then I realised that I won't need a car in Bangor. I will be able to walk to the casino and grocery store. If I keep my car I will need to put about $600 into it between getting it in shape to get a state inspection and renewing my car insurance and that's money I just don't have. I found someone who will buy it from me tomorrow for $1,700 and that should get me by for a little while. If I don't make any money grinding in the next month or so I can find a part time job up there. Even if I have to work at McDonalds I will. I just need to keep myself in the game as long as possible. I am scared that if I hop on a lobster boat for the rest of the season I will never achieve my poker goals.

So with living expenses for another month and a half to two months I am giving everything I can to this dream of mine. Now that I have a live stake and I will be next to the casino I should be able to grind a ton of hours. I will be able to grind live during the day and online at night. I am going all in on this. Football season is starting so I am hoping the games online will be good and the live games are always good. I am hopeful that September will be a good month for me to start turning things around.

Luckily I put my camp on stilts so it will make it through the winter fine. I am going to miss this place until next Spring. I am giving up everything I care about right now to keep pursuing this dream, but don't let it be mistaken for desperation, it's drive. If I give up now I will spend the rest of my life wondering if I could have made it as a poker pro.

I am scared and sad for my pup though. The girl who I got him from has been watching him while I grind but she is starting classes in a couple days and I don't think she will be able to watch him as much as I need her to. I am hoping that one of my roommates will watch him during the day because one of them collects social security and stays home all day. If none of that works out I will have to find a home for him. I only took him in the first place because he was going to go to the shelter that day if there was no home for him so I took him but let the girl know that I could only keep him until Sep-Oct. Since then I have gotten attached and I want to keep him for the rest of his life, but I don't think it will be possible. Even if I wasn't playing poker and had a regular 9-5 job I would have the same problem. He just isn't ok being left alone. His voice goes hoarse from barking so much and he get traumatized if he is left alone for even a few hours. I just don't think it would be fair to him if I left him in a kennel at home all day or something along those lines. I am going to try to keep him, but I fear that there will be nothing I can do.

I will continue to write in my blog from time to time, but until next spring it will just be a blog about struggling as a **** reg at low stakes games. I have to get back to packing now.

GL man. I think it is a good decision to get rid of a car. You really don't need one to get around. It is healthier without. I mean in a city you won't get as much exercise as on a lobster boat. And on top it is better for the environment.

I don't think that you will make it as a poker-pro. But I think it is also not about it. It is about struggling and not giving-up and looking for ways to make things work. Very inspirational.
