As a fan of the movies, if you haven't already seen it, check out "The Stuntman".

A very enjoyable flick about a fugitive that stumbles upon a movie set and a maniacal director that will do anything or manipulate anyone to get the shot he wants.

Ever seen "Rat Pfink a Boo Boo"? I tell people about this movie and they just don't believe me. Would like to hear your opinion if you have watched it.

+1, this is a great film, I'm sure you'll find it worth watching.

Gonna +1 this post as well. Haven't seen Wish You Were Here, but the other three recommendations are well worth watching. Australian cinema is greatly underrated imo.

Guess I should recommend a few myself.

European
Baise Moi http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249380/
Irreversible http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
The Idiots http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154421/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Be aware, all three of these films are pretty extreme and not for the faint of heart. They are, however, brilliant and thought provoking and you will remember them for a long time.

Asian
Red Cliff http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425637/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Death Note http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1241317/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3
Death Note: The Last Name http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810827/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4
Audition http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Some superb movies come out of Asia these days, I could spend all day listing but it's your blog!

Russia
Night Watch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403358/?ref_=tt_rec_tt
Day Watch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409904/?ref_=sr_1
Admiral http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1101026/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Three examples of how Russian cinema has really improved over the last decade. There is a third movie in the Day Watch - Night Watch series yet to come.

Ok... will leave it here for now and give you your blog back. Enjoy

Edit: Just noticed in your list above that you saw A Field In England. I watched this recently and found it really compelling, if a little confusing at times.
Reece Shearsmith, who played Whitehead in the movie, was also in a tv series called The League Of Gentlemen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0184135/
A really dark and surreal comedy that I think would be right up your alley.
Ok... am gonna stop now... honest

Hey DB, you know you can type the name of the movie in the link, so your lists don't look so sloppy.

I would love to see detailed reviews of some of the classics. I feel like there's a certain set of movies that are just accepted great but very little analysis of what makes them stand out as the top 1% of all movies. Zulu, in particular, is one I would love to hear a detailed analysis of, as it left very little impression on me personally (maybe you already have a post or podcast that talks about this?).

Here us what I posted about Zulu in a Lounge discussion in on this movie:

I view this film as a classic, a masterpiece. It does take its time to start properly, with a leisurely look at the preacher and daughter in a zulu camp, and then the first halting conversation between Chard and Bromhead, but once Chard tells them to put the fires out with the soup and takes charge because he was commisioned a few months earlier than Bromhead, the tension and excitement start to grip, and never stop.

The big set pieces are terrific, the massed attacks, the drilling of the British soldiers using their guns to hold back the Zulu hordes, and the music, but like all truly great movies, there are also wonderful, often wordless, quiet moments that make it what it is.

When the zulus start chanting near the end, and Chard sees a man's chin drop, its clear he knows there isnt much fight left, for example. Or the rollcall at the end, where the Colour-Sergeant calls roll and silently crosses out the names of the fallen.

This is my favourite movie of all time. I know there are better movies, but this is my favourite.

Fun fact: In the opening battle scene of Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator', the German barbarians are using one of the Zulu war chants from the Zulu movie.

The Iron Giant 10/10

using the strict IMDB rating system (1-10, integers only), I give this 10/10. On my own scoring system, I'd say it's 96/100

Probably the best animated movie I've ever seen.

A really terrific movie. The animation style is clean and simple, like a cross between Miyazagi (eg Ponyo, Princess Mononoke) and late 60s/early 70s Disney (Jungle Book/Aristocats), and it has great characterisation, detail, framing, dialogue, storytelling, and it is charming and funny. Every character save maybe the villain is authentic, and even Vin Diesel give a good performance in conveying the humanity and feeling within this big Iron man.

The battle scenes at the end made me chuckle as it obviously been copied by Pacific Rim, but the film has more heart, emotion, character development and talent than any new movie I've seen this year. This movie says something, and it moves me.

Always worth watching.

Coogan's Bluff

Terrific little fish-out-of-water thriller by Eastwood and director Don Siegel (they both went on to make Dirty Harry(. Contains one of the screen's greatest cuffs around the head when a guy gets fresh with a lady in front of Eastwood, and also a terrific hippy club with its own theme song: The Pigeon-Toed Orange Peel

Party Animal 73/100 a true 80s curio, rarely seen, with some funny, ridiculous bits, lots of boobies and terrific soundtrack. I laughed a lot. Favourite part: drug taking scene:
