Just to make sure you're clear about this - most everyone ITT is pointing you at exactly the same thing. For example, when I said this:

The Vanguard Target Retirement fund is literally a Vanguard Lazy Portfolio. It is a single low-cost fund that does exactly what the lazy portfolio approach is designed to do. (The only choice you have to make is retirement date to pick. But all that's really doing is deciding how much you want to weight stocks vs. bonds, which is a choice you'd have to make if designing your own lazy portfolio anyway.)

The reason I say this is not to repeat my earlier advice (although it is great advice and I deserve great credit!). Instead, I'm concerned that you might be tempted to look at this series of posts and say, "Wow, so many people are telling me so many different things. It's too much mental energy to figure out what to do, so I'll just sit on my hands and do nothing."

In reality, effectively everyone has told you the same thing, and there's a very, very easy way to do it:
1. Open a Vanguard account
2. Deposit $XXX in a Target Retirement Fund (the 2055 fund would be totally reasonable)

The end

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

I have issues with sleepwalking, usually i think i get up in the middle of the night to pee. Ive never hurt myself. But the other night i woke up on the ****ing ground in my spare bedroom and my back was killing me. I tripped and fell and landed on something. Been having back spasms for 3 days and itís brutal. I really wanted to golf this weekend too. This may take like two weeks to recover.

Ofc ive been drinking because it relieves the spasms and pain. If i go to the doctor to get muscle relaxers itís annoying and stressful and they always try to give you the ole runaround and prescribe ibuprofen first. Like ***** if i wanted ibuprofen i wouldve just bought it.

I really need to get into a regular doctor, my health just sucks. And if i had a relationship with one this kind of request wouldnt be a big deal. I always just go to urgent care because itís fast and easy.

I forgot to mention i have ~10k student loan (i took it out in my last year so i could go down to just working weekends) and then $5k left on my car loan. Its gonna be really tempting not to trade it in for a nicer one but i wonít. Carís worth about $8k but itís in REALLY awesome condition and has a brand new engine with only 10k miles on it. Itíll easily last me 10+ years with very little maintenance. I take it in twice a year and do all the recommended stuff and iíve never fallen behind on that. Brand new nice tires too. Maybe I could get it customized to look nicer or something.

So iíll pay off my debt and then that leaves 115k. Letís say 20k goes into the savings account and the rest into a lazy fund. Maybe i take a few k out and go on some adventure but knowing me i doubt it.

Are you really that much of a car guy? Seems like keeping the existing car is a clear winner. If you want to spend $50-$100/month to improve your quality of life, get a housecleaner to come every couple weeks. Your apartment cleanliness seems to weigh on you a lot more than not having a brand new car.

i mean kind of but not overly so. I do really like driving and cars in general. i think having a bmw or a muscle car would be awesome but my current car makes way too much sense.

Used Bmw for like $15k is the more sensible option. But if i could have ANY car id cream my pants for a black dodge charger. I rented one once and it was ****ing amazing.

I should stop talking about it before i get any stupid ideas. I havent earned a nice car yet, maybe in a few years

Changing cars is way overrated and is burning money if what you already have does the job well - as soon as you've got used to it you're already thinking of another upgrade. It's just another advertising/marketing scam.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

I had a 2001 ford focus before this car. It was a nightmare and i spent easily $2k/year in repairs just keeping the stupid thing from breaking down and it ALWAYS was. It finally melted on me right after i got my captains license.

I did my research and decided i wanted a dependable, nice, stress free car and thatís what i mostly ended up with, although not at first.

The car was a great deal, a 2012 hyundai sonata with 30k miles on it. It was such a massive upgrade from my piece of crap ford and i was so ecstatic.

But it had a factory defect that blew up a few cylinders in 2016 so they replaced the entire engine for free. After that i was like ****, iím practically married to this thing now. Iíve owned it for 5 years almost. I do like it, itís comfy and sporty for what class of car it is. It looks like a nicer car than it is. I just donít see a scenario where i can get rid of it, lol.

It occasionally will crap out on me but itís rare. I had a starter that went bad about 8 months ago and got ****ing stranded at a gas station 20 mins before a midterm. So that sucked.

Yeah. Rent a Dodge Charger for a trip to LV or something. Don't drive it on the 405 at 11 miles per hour.

Workmate has a recent-ish BMW 1 series he upgraded to from something else that I can't remember but which was doing the job pretty well before upwardly mobile wifey decided it wasn't in keeping with their status. He's had nothing but trouble with the BMW, which I accept is probably runbad, but there's nothing to say you won't also runbad.

Its fine to decide to upgrade your car as long as its something you could afford on your salary even without your recent windfall.

How is your daily commute? If its far, I would consider spending a bit more money to move closer.

I could afford a charger on my salary but it would be less comfortable than iíd like. I dont really want a $500 car payment. I can easily afford that but i just dont want to have that kind of negative cash flow when i am close to having 0 car payments, very low rent, and basically no other obligations. My expendable income is way higher than what my income is and i really have been enjoying buying whatever i feel like and my account balance still always goes up

I probably have to unfriend kate on snapchat. Her stories the last week or so are killing me inside. Just nonstop photos of her with that guy.

I dont think shes being purposely callous and i doubt she even thinks of me at all when sheís doing it. But she has 100% done it in the past to make me feel ****ty and its in her range. I dont ****ing get it, she was all in my **** constantly and talking to me a lot and then poof as soon as she got what she needed sheís gone.

Iím remembering now how cold she is. Sheís like not a bad person but she genuinely doesnt care about other people beyond what theyre giving her and how they make her feel. **** her man

Been drinking way too much, think i maybe have a little bit of an issue. Nothing i cant deal with though. This week is no alcohol, it has to happen. my old psychiatrist told me it can create a feedback loop with my depression where i drink because im not feeling well which then makes the depression worse, etc

Seriously J

Join the gym and actually go there or buy a bench and weights so you can work out at home

Sort out a program and get strong.

Think of working out time as meditation.

You will not regret it

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

on the bright side I think I am really crushing it at work. I can tell my boss is placing a lot more trust in me and we're having a lot more 1 on 1 sessions. I also seem to be included in more important conversations now. I just got put in charge of a few important projects, demos of our software for major companies. One was kind of a failing project that we need to rescue. Another is I'm setting up a machine for a demo we're shipping to an EXTREMELY large company. Spent most of the week troubleshooting that, working with a lot of software I'd never touched before, and doing linux system stuff I definitely was a little out of my depth for. got it nailed down today, ahead of schedule. Plus all my normal management stuff.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

I'm actually a little nervous because I'm starting to get really comfortable and confident wheelin' and dealin' there, and when I get a little cocky I tend to say or do stupid ****. So I gotta reign myself in a little but I think I'm really doing a good job. I feel like I am and that is rare for me.

It's funny how much of my value I bring is just in my personality and communication/organizational ability. Just being the guy to ask the right questions at the right times to the right people is hugely valuable. I think I'm definitely more of a management/business person than a software developer. So I am in the right place right now. I decided a little while ago I eventually want to run a startup.

You didnt respond to the housekeeper thing which could very well help how you're feeling indirectly, personally its been a game changer for me, only down side is the vetting proces.

If you become interested in a weight thing my proposal is still open, my life is a mess fwiw and I keep gaining weight.
