oh yea and QA guy initiated another conversation that sounded like it was leading into a beatdown this afternoon and I just paused it and said, "This is a conversation you, me, and <CTO> need to get together and continue, because it is important."

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Thanks.

Feel a little better. Got sick, kinda unsurprisingly. Been running a fever for two days, I think it might be a sinus infection.

Been playing a lot of poker lately and enjoying it. I think poker is making a slight comeback. It's more fun when I don't care about the money, which is new to me. I don't know if I play better or worse though. Been winning though.

I'd watch and probably post unhelpful critiques of your play! Possibly copping a ban

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

ehhh i'm playing a mix of 10NL and 25NL and i have no idea what I'm doing.

it's really soft though. I'm playing way too aggressive postflop i think, i just downloaded PT4 and I have something like 5+ AF in all my games with 60%+ AFq

you almost have to at these stakes though, people will peel so light and fold to almost all reasonably sized turn bets. so you're almost forced to double or even triple barrel on a lot of boards that don't hit everything.

people also Cbet nearly 100% so I check raise a lot of flops. Lol. Stuff you could never get away with back in the day

PT4 is not a subscription, it is a one off lifetime license still - but they may well try and sign you up to some during the process of trying to buy it. "Tabletracker" I remember people getting caught out by, and now they are the same company as Tableninja and HM2 more subscription services may be pushed also.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

had a monster night last night on stream where I took ~400 blinds off some short stack HU over about 300 hands.

Then I just looked at my rake - after RB, I am paying 17 BB/100 in rake. Jesus. I need a different site.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Work is going better - I am still struggling really badly. I guess this is to be expected. The QA guy has his 2 cents about how I do my management job - which he chimes in all the time. I appreciate the advice but he doesn't really understand the full scope of what I have been doing.

Undoubtedly I could do better. I need to steer the project more - but right now the critical path is not very obvious. We still need to figure that out.

My testing framework seems like it got rejected in backdoor conversations and the QA guy has (rightfully) taken over the design part. This is what I wanted him to do in the beginning - but he flat out refused. Perhaps I should have pushed the issue harder rather than assuming the mantle myself.

It turns out what he didn't like was my design, not the actual scripts themselves. I can tell he's gone over them and he is FIERCELY critical of other people's programming - and despite this he actually wants to incorporate my scripts into his framework. So I am doing that now and working with him quite closely.

I think someone must have talked to him because he's being quite a bit gentler with me now. But for now, this guy's the closest thing I have to a mentor and that's fine because I think on an extremely high level this guy knows what the **** he's doing. I want him to be an integral part of this process and it seems like everyone usually overrides him or ignores him because the manner in which he delivers his ideas is bad - not just tone, which is bad, but his writing is awful too.

So I think right now he's using me as a conduit to communicate his ideas about how things should be done and I'm perfectly fine with that. He wants a voice and he has made this really clear to me the last week or so. He should have that, I have no idea why he gets brushed over or overruled so much, it seems to be a personal likeability issue.

I have one member of my team who I am convinced is practically worthless, their work is slow and when it's delivered often doesn't work. I'm not sure how to approach this, if it were up to me I'd have a really serious conversation with this individual and say "Hey, step it up."

I know I may need to do that eventually but I want to be 100% sure I am correct and it's not just a personal thing or something I'm misunderstanding. But I can tell from people's reactions to this person that they are not really trusted with anything important. And of course, this person's aware of that, and I can tell it's a source of great frustration.

One thing you might want to consider at some point (if you're not already doing this) is setting up regular one-to-ones with each of your team. You'll get the chance to chat and learn more about each person so you're in a much better position to assess their worth and potential, and learn more about how and why the team (dys)functions as it does.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Update:

Job is going ok. Last month was really rough because my boss left pretty suddenly for a month and I was trying to keep the ship afloat. Didn't do a very good job but learned a lot of lessons.

The place is kind of dysfunctional but I like the job. They are giving me small development tasks to do in addition to my management duties. I am 100% a manager and make a lot of decisions, the degree to which I am constantly surprised at the amount of authority I'm given.

My old job promptly fell apart after I left. I don't know if it was because of me leaving but it was very quick and very brutal. I learned today my old boss finally got fired - something I thought would never, ever happen. So, the new manager is one of my best friends and he called me asking me if I was willing to come back.

I told him he knows my condition. I want the nazi fired. He said we could talk after everything was settled down.

So I'd come back for like a weekend shift which is what I always wanted to do from the beginning but the environment was so toxic that I quickly decided not to do that. Now, it seems like an option again. I'm SUPER excited.

As a kid, could you ever imagine one day you'd be like, "Okay, I'll come back and captain a boat for you part-time. But only if you fire the Nazi."

Don’t take this the wrong way but hourly ferry captain doesn’t seem to have the same long term career potential as your current gig - would you really go back if they can the nazi?

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

So I took this weird interest in golf lately because my roommate plays pretty seriously and I spectated him the other weekend in a local tournament. I told my therapist and she strongly suggested I take it up as a hobby as a way to get me exercising and outside of my apartment.

My dad was really into a golf but I just never took to it as a child. I had an okay swing but it was messing up my baseball swing so I stopped playing around the age of 11 or 12.

Today I went out to the range with my friend, it was a little shaky at first but I just practiced some short irons and a 60 degree wedge.

My 9 iron was meh but the 8 iron i was hitting pretty consistently about 120-130 yards and exactly on the practice green where I wanted it to go, like ~50% of the time.

Then the wedge was going really well too for not playing in so long. Was practicing 20-60 yard shots with it.

Might get a beginner club set and practice. even going to the range and hitting a bucket of 50 balls after work could be a good routine to get into even if i don't play an actual round for a while til i get more comfortable. my friend's willing to give me lessons and help me pick out clubs. money isn't really an issue for me right now so now's a good time to take up a hobby when I'm not dating anyone and feeling kinda down mentally.

Golf is a great idea. Getting outside, socialising, taking your frustration out on a ball, exercise etc. Plus as a bonus it can be quite beneficial career wise with networking etc.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Make an appointment to go get fitted proper for some clubs. Your friend can help but there are professionals dying to help with technologies son. A proper set of irons I wanna say is like 1500. If you go get fitted you will know what to look for on craigslist.

I went to the driving range for the first time in 3 years the other day. I was hitting everything like 5-10 degrees to the right but my knee was still messed up. Everything wasnt lining up.

Its actually a good workout if youre hitting 100 balls a day full swing. You can get pretty yolked. I would walk to the range with 3 clubs, work on my short game then blast 100 balls and walk home. Great for the mental

Good point Dids. I had a friend who is super easygoing totally lose it playing golf. Extremely amusing performance, involving damage to his clubs.
